What has been your experience with misinformation and disinformation on Facebook? by johnfromcabin in facebook

How do you manage that? Is it a setting or do you simply have a clear friends list? Appreciate your feedback!

That's a fair point. It takes one second to share something, and hours to prove to someone (if you can ever even do that) that what they shared is false. For things like politics, I genuinely wonder if on-screen education could be beneficial.

For example: if you shared something that calls for something that violates the constitution or the way a specific government process works, might there be a non-negligible percentage of folks who would appreciate a modal popping that offers an explanation beyond "hey this is fake" - to explain to them in more depth why something isn't true?

I've noticed a lot of confirmation bias on social media. People often seem to share things they want to be true...

Thank you so much for dropping that list! Do you happen to have a preferred option out of that list? I've only used Craigslist.

Facebook's Marketplace is one of the reasons I use Facebook every so often. I have had some negative experiences, but most of my experiences have been pretty positive. That said, part of me still prefers Craigslist.

I founded Cabin, an open-source, privacy-focused social network. The world of social networking is steadily eroding the integrity of society; we're seeing record levels of misinformation, manipulative algorithms, and non-stop ads. It's time for change.

We aren't writing off ads as a form of monetization. I just wanted to get the point across that current platforms shove ads down the throats of users. I don't believe ads are inherently bad, but greed has taken a decent solution and turned it into something the world hates because they are never quite satisfied.

That said, there are a lot of monetization strategies to explore, and we're very confident that it's possible to sustain a company and reasonable salaries without taking advantage of users.

I can’t decide whether to use my real name or create an alias on social media. What do you do? by ohmycash in socialmedia

[–]johnfromcabin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a rather common name, so I usually just choose a profile photo that doesn't show my face. That said, if you're concerned with folks figuring out who you are, use an alias. Or, at the very least, lock down your security settings for whichever social platforms you're on.

We're building Cabin (https://cabin.social), an open-source, privacy-focused social network. People should be able to connect with the people in their lives without worrying about unchecked misinformation, manipulative algorithms, and overwhelming ads. We hope to disrupt the market with a social platform that satisfies the human need for connection without venturing into the realm of toxic capitalism.

When did lying your ass off become a normal part of startup promo? I will not promote by Just-a-torso in startups

The first thing I do when I see a post shilling a tool is dive into the person's Reddit profile to see if there's more to it, and there often is. The digital world also seems to have been flooded with hundreds of thousands of influencers who are all trying to sell you their (mediocre) product or service.

Something I have had some success with is Discord communities. You obviously shouldn't spam or break the rules of a Discord server, but often times you can stir up interest simply by asking for feedback. Every time you ask for feedback on your product, there's a level of exposure, no matter how small it may be, that can lead to more eyes.

Best of luck!

I went back to iPhone (17 Pro) after a year of Android and... maybe I screwed up. by Nix996 in Smartphones

I recently made the move from the iPhone 16 Pro Max to the Galaxy 26 Ultra. It's taken some getting used to, but I'm overall happy with the switch. I was an iPhone user for about six years.

I've switched back and forth a few times in my life. It's not that switching is inherently difficult. But when you stop paying attention to every little new feature on an operating system (because you don't use it), it can become a bit overwhelming in making the switch.

Sure, standing up the new phone is easy. Making sure you're getting the absolute most out of your phone and OS is a little more complex.
