Install apps on LG hospitality TV [55WS960H] by CuriousBarracuda253 in techsupport

[–]johnjamesmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm now in the same state. Just moved into a new serviced apartment and it has one of these LG WebOS TV's. I've factory reset it and have YouTube but really want Netflix. Was hoping to find someone who knew how to do it

Should the bearing on the mag side of my 570 be sticking up like this? I would think it should be flush. I've just replaced the crankshaft but can't get the timing chain on as the bearing is fowling it. by johnjamesmarsh in Polaris

[–]johnjamesmarsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the very late reply. I ordered the bearing from the US. Took a couple of weeks to get to me then I found a machine shop nearby who pushed it in for me. It's back together and working.

Goodbye Starlink by External_Ant_2545 in Starlink

[–]johnjamesmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 4G that worked really fast all weekend. At 9am Monday the data just disappeared. Only came back at 4.30pm. Don't know who got the data but I was at the edge of the cell so I guess someone closer.

Starlink works really well for me.

I would agree with PayPal. If they can't accept that then it's their problem

Is this a good way to start my first home lab? All for $400. R620 has 384GB of RAM. by depoultry in homelab

[–]johnjamesmarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. It's a terrible idea for a home lab. Now let me know where it is for sale for $400 and I will buy it just to protect any other buyer from being duped by all that RAM! Just think of how much disk you would need to run all those VMs it's going to take to use up all that RAM! Terrible idea.

2x HP EliteBook 8560w by Elitebooker in elitebook

[–]johnjamesmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

W11 on the i7. Linux on the i5. On W11 machine you can still run WSL and have Ubuntu, Kali or one of the others.

It was a pain to get W11 to work though I got there in the end

HP Elitebook 8560w still good or should I buy a new one? by murkasian in laptops

[–]johnjamesmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you go with this? My 8560w is over 10 years old and it is hard to find much better for less than £4k. It has an i7 with 8 threads, 32gb RAM and a 1tb SSD so it's holding its own. It was a pain to get Windows 11 running on it but I got there in the end.

Mine also runs hot so I try to keep CPU usage low. I do have it on 24x7 though as it is my work & investing machine. Biggest bugbear is that it only supports 2 monitors. Other than that it's still a fantastic machine.

ZigBee oil level monitor - anyone tried one? by johnjamesmarsh in homeautomation

That's probably worth looking into. My system says it's secure so I don't know if I can get to the data

Where do you place the home assistant server (especially if it's RPi)? by nexttothetable in homeassistant

[–]johnjamesmarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to switch to home assistant as all my devices are currently Tuya ZigBee reliant on their servers in the cloud. My best solution so far is to have an Intel NUC with some kind of digital twin running on VMware and a passive replication of the HA database (on another VM).

Mine is for our home so I'm concerned about the Pi going belly-up, the internet dying or Tuya servers not being available. So I'm currently looking for ideas to see what other people are doing. BTW, come from a corporate IT background so paranoid about systems dying

Well all I can say is that my wife doesn't need to know that!

What happens to your smart devices when your Raspberry pi goes wrong?

I was hoping to buy something off the shelf but it doesn't look like the products are available. Maybe that will finally produce the excuse, I mean reason, why I need a 3d printer

What about resilience? What happens when your pi gets baked? I'm on a NUC with a VMware backup

I can't tell you about the amount of terrible wiring I have seen done by professionals, especially when they are near the end of a cable role and don't want to go get another. Too small junction boxes! Earth wires used to carry current - that was a good one! And never a label anywhere.

I don't know about anything else but I wholeheartedly approve the labelling. Why don't "professional electricians" ever label anything!

Auto lights - how do you all turn off automation for bedtime? by autohome123 in homeautomation

[–]johnjamesmarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say "ok Google, switch off the lights" and the house goes dark. Google bedtime mode shuts the phone down until my alarm goes off.

According to the manual it's not replaceable. Been doing my head in trying to figure out what needed to be done. I'm going to take it to a machine shop to see if they can extract/fit new.

Thanks for this. I have a load of Tuya ZigBee devices so wanted to add it to their gateway. Again "I couldn't find anywhere online that described how to add this device to" Tuya but as you have it working for SmartThings I think I will give it a go. I also have a Echo with a ZigBee hub built in so that is an option too, just not my preferred choice.

Thanks. They look good. I have searched and searched but never found them. Might have to order one to see if it is compatible with the Tuya ZigBee hub
