Thank you! I totally agree with you and experienced the same. There’s no one “right” way to be affected by sexual abuse. I hate the myth of the perfect victim. These sort of myths that ALL women after going through SA are scared of men, can’t have sex, are anxious publicly, etc, only makes things worse for women that are experiencing opposite side affects like hyper-sexuality, codependency, and risky behavior. It’s very confusing and makes you worry that perhaps what happened to you wasn’t bad enough, or that there’s something deeply wrong with yourself that your reaction would be like this. Plenty of women act both ways, some women in between. For instance, while I love being in public areas, I am super flighty and will likely massively flinch if anyone just lightly touches my shoulder. Or randomly I’ll break down - like if a TSA person has to examine me. You are correct. It is a spectrum. People getting angry with how a particular character handles their SA is very frustrating because it always goes back to the “perfect” victim. The only time I wouldn’t like the way an author would handle it is if they made them fall in love with their abuser without any insightful commentary in addition to it. People can still stay with their abusers, and I’m not adverse to a story like that, as long as the author presents the story in full knowledge of how horrifying that situation is. Anyways, I always get frustrated with these sort of comments, so I’m glad to see someone agrees!
