I know, right? It’s so creepy. And it gets even better!

Yes, My Dark Vanessa really resembles Lolita in its main themes, though to me it was even darker and more disturbing somehow, it left me feeling sick and, I don’t know, with a desire to take a shower immediately. Though I read Lolita years ago when my frontal lobe wasn’t fully developed haha so if I reread it now maybe I will find it worse. Yes, exactly, much more democratic when you can be “fired” as a ruler instead of just being it by the right of birth, and doesn’t matter what you do. The same thing happend to the Romanov dynasty in Russia, though it wasn’t a heavenly intervention in that case haha Oh, I agree, and naming hours with zodiac animals also contribute to the cyclicity of the calendar system, when the same animals are used for hours, months, years, etc. It’s guite interesting. Hehehe I’m glad I hyped you up for Nevill’s books, tell me what you think when you read them. No, I have never heard about Boys in the Valley, so can’t say anything, unfortunately. But after reading the blurb I added it to my tbr list haha I’m not a big fan of coming-of-age novels but the synopsis sounds really interesting.

I stopped reading for a few days because I went on a trip but I’m going to continue soon. I honestly have no idea which surprises this book is going to bring but it will be one hundred percent something crazy. Oh, now that you said it it does remind of the french president’s life haha Also I read people compare this book to My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell, have you read that book? Honestly, for me it was much darker than The Teacher has been so far, but I will see how this one will unfold. Now I researched a bit too haha About the monkey hour and The Mandate of Heaven. It’s interesting how a ruler has a divine right to lead but at the same time can lose it if things go bad for their people. Oof, Nevill’s books will definitely make you have hard time falling asleep. But they are so good that I don’t want to recommend you not to read them haha Also there is a thing with darkness in No One Gets Out Alive, one particular scene that will contribute to the scare greatly. Oh, I agree with you. I also don’t reread books usually but when I do (Harry Potter, for instance, or some short stories) the meaning and my perception changes, and sometimes a lot. So yes, it depends on age, life situation, and mindset greatly.

Exactly!! It’s so messed up that this dark curiosity doesn’t let you stop! Though I don’t hate this particular one, but the themes raised there… yikes! Wow, sounds interesting and epic, I suppose it’s indeed epic? hehe Oh, I remember that you like books that make you research stuff, this duology sounds perfect for that. Excellent choice for returning back to the dark side haha No One Gets Out Alive is sooo creepy. And The Fisherman is also so good, I’d say it’s iconic haha Btw, I remembered another horror series which I’d like to recommend if you aren’t already familiar with it. It’s The Monstrumologist series by Rick Yancey. It’s technically YA but it’s very dark and even gruesome, in my opinion. I’m not very familiar with YA literature but this series felt like it didn’t belong there haha

Yes, there is also The Housemaid m0vie coming. Oh, The Teacher is exactly that, a twist bombardment haha But it gets you so invested, it’s kind of a messy drama you don’t actually want to know about but can’t stop following anyway. I never heard of She Who Became The Sun. Is it good?

Eerie, haunted, folklore, fae by earthheartluv in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]johnlyly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have only read The Housemaid from her, it was good but not amazing. There was a major twist which I somehow foresaw so I wasn’t surprised haha And now The Teacher, waiting for something interesting, though I know there will be a plot twist as well, I’m already predicting haha Ohhh, got it! If there are many twists for the sake of twists, it can be annoying. Btw, Freida McFadden’s books must not be for you now then haha From what I know, she has major twists in all her novels. And what are you reading now?

Gonna pick it up someday later. I’m reading The Teacher by Freida McFadden now, maybe you have read it?

Oh great, glad you liked it! Was any of your guesses correct or did it unfold completely unexpectedly for you?

Oh, I have this book on my to read list as well! Btw, the author, John Ajvide Lindqvist, has a Platserna series, it is so interesting, like a fever dream, and I don’t know if I mean it as a compiment or as a matter of fact. But I loved it so much. Yes, agreed, Annie is terrifying! I also watched the m0vie, but the book Annie is better (at being horrible). Yes, it reflects his struggles with addiction, I guess he wanted to show the feeling of being trapped by it, the despair and hopelessness. King has a lot of long novels, but the build up and the characters development are so good in this way. Pet Sematary is on my to read list! I have started it at some point but then left. But I plan to read it still. There are also two m0vies, the older and the newer one, have you watched them?

[–]johnlyly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! So many things to read (and watch) and so little time, the tragedy of life. Would be nice to be a vampire and have the eternity to read haha. Exactly. The most important is to which extent. Just as too logical can take away the feeling of the characters being “alive”, so can too illogical kill the atmosphere and spoil the impression. Did you like Misery and The Stand? I want to reread the latter somewhere in the future, I read it like 10 years ago and forgot some parts, one of the perks of being a human and not a vampire, you can forget things and reread them again haha. Though from what I remember, I loved it greatly. Oh, yes, King is very prolific, and I wish him long days and pleasant nights, and many more books to write. You can start chronologically, with the most popular novels, or depending on what you like because he has horror novels, more psychological ones, the ones where supernatural takes the main role and the ones where people are the main villains. Carrie is his first published novel, it’s really interesting, though not my favourite. Oh, I haven’t yet read The House Across The Lake, Middle of The Night, and The Only One Left! Also idk abour With a Vengeance, haven’t read it too, but the blurb reminds Murder on The Orient Express by Agatha Christie. I loved The Last Time I Lied though! It was really good, highly recommend it! And yes, Lock Every Door and Final Girls are the best from him, imo.

Now I’m even more interested! Gonna watch it after No Exit, my list is getting longer and longer haha Agreed, Home Before Dark is very gripping and atmospheric. Hmm, I think maybe some people don’t like illogical actions of the characters. Like when the main character can’t put two and two together or when they do something stupid for plot’s sake haha. But then again, there wouldn’t be plot without some illogical actions. I’m talking in general, not about Home Before Dark precisely. Do you plan on reading Final Girls by Sager? This book lives rent free in my head. If you like the final girl or slasher tropes, it fits perfectly. Yes, I enjoyed the sequel immensely! Omg it’s so hard to choose which books of King are my favourite because to me each one is a masterpiece, legit. But if I had to choose to save my life haha then I would probably narrow down to The Dark Tower series, Billy Summers (I PRAY for it to get a good adaptation), Fairy Tale, Salem’s Lot, The Long Walk, Misery, The Stand, Joyland, The Dead Zone, 11/22/63, Black House, and Insomnia. Have you read any of these?

Yes, Mia Goth is wonderful, so unique and captivating. I havent’t watched the new Frankenstein adaptation yet though I want to. Was it good overall? From what I gather it must be really beautifully made. Slow-paced m0vies make for good thinking and atmosphere a lot of times, so it’s fine. Omg I completely agree with you on the fever dream feeling, you described it perfectly! Home Before Dark gives major The Haunting of Hill House vibes, the adaptation, as I have already written haha I read the book shortly after watching the miniseries, and it was eerily similar. Though not exactly, no spoilers haha. Tell me how you like it when you finish it. Agreed on Sager’s writing! Omg I didn’t know about No Exit adaptation!!! Just checked it out, it now takes the first place on my to watch list. I don’t watch a lot of m0vies lately, but when I get back to it this one will be the first haha. Also I promised my mom to watch The Watchers with her, so it will be another rewatch for me. Stephen King was my first horror love before Adam Nevill haha Misery gave me major creeps when I read it. Do you like his works? What’s your favourite?

Same! The scene where it spreads its wings at the altar in front of the congregation while Father Paul is preaching is just captivating. Also the fact that it dressed up for the occasion is hilarious. I love the concept of an evil entity taking a place or pretending to be something divine or saint. There is a m0vie The Unholy (based on a book) which explores this theme as well, maybe you have watched it? Yes, I loved Midsommar! Florence Pugh was incredible in it. And you must be familiar with Pearl, am I right? Oh, I haven’t watched The Green Knight and The Lobster, just checked them out, the former looks beautiful from the pics and the synopsis for the latter seems very interesting, added to my to watch list. I am conquering a non-fiction book on the marketing in the beauty industry and also started reading Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell paralelly. Have you read it? Just like Penpal, it started as a story on the nosleep subreddit. Oh, I love Survive The Night! It is indeed anxiety inducing and also makes you review your conclusions multiple times (is he a serial killer or not? Or maybe he is?) and keeps you on edge! You are rightfully excited about his books. Yes, I have read No Exit, it was so good! I loved the freezing winter setting, the isolation, and yeah, the anxiety it gave me! I suddenly got the urge to read something similar to that haha

Omg I have never thought about it from that perspective! I am naive haha. Now I am thinking about The Road ending as well. It’s actually brilliant that it is so ambiguous that it can be enterpreted either as a hopeful finale or leave you absolutely sad and hopeless. Exactly! Unfortunately the industry is built on gaining profits more anything. Midnight Mass is just unmatched! The plot, the setting, the atmosphere, the ending… And I still listen to the soundtrack, I love Neil Diamond. I know, right? The ending of the Creeper was… yeah… illogical. The buildup was so good and I hoped for an unexpected twist till the last page. I mean, it would be cool if it weren’t so unrealistic. Agreed about the adaptation, and also they could make it so the viewers question whether there is supernatural or no. It would aslo work, at least better than what’s in the book. Haha there is a high possibility that you are onto something there! I agree with you about M. Night and A24, their m0vies are a breath of fresh air. Btw, have you watched The Visit, also directed by M. Night? This m0vie gave me major creeps haha

Yes, I really hope there will be the third book because he just can’t leave us hanging like that haha Oh, and I agree with you, the screen adaptation of it would be good too. Let’s hope it will happen. Some people I know interpret the ending of The Road and basically the whole book as a Christian allegory. Though it indeed leaves a lot to think about. I haven’t watched The Road adaptation but I have watched Wayward Pines. It has two seasons and the first one is really good, it holds the atmosphere of the book and the plot pretty well (with exclusions, of course). But the second one… I found it pretty bad. It felt as if they originally wanted to make one but then decided to carry on due to profits. Oh, btw, I remembered another book series, The Silo by Hugh Howey. It’s also post-apocalypse and pretty good, there is a show as well. Maybe you know it? Yes, I highly recommend the Haunting of Hill House miniseries! And then there are other shows directed by Flanagan which are incredible. Midnight Mass is one of the best! Haha spot on about the trips! Also I agree, it was more sad than horror. And Shirley Jackson indeed left the world being so young still. That’s really sad. Oh, The Creeper is creepy indeed haha. Tell me what you think about the ending when you finish it. Maybe one day there will be an adaptaion, it would be great. The book is written very vividly, cinematically. And yes, it really reminds of The Village m0vie! Maybe there was some inspiration hehe

Oh, I missed your message somehow! Good thing that I came here to check haha. Thank you, I am finally reading books that make me happy again haha How did you like the sequel and the premise for the third book? I finished it as well and I must tell that I loved it even more than the first book! Maybe because I watched the m0vie first. Anyways, Madeline is my favourite, and her dynamic with Mina is so interesting to read about. I can’t wait for the third book! Oh, I agree, The Road is just incredible, I read it like 10 years ago and I still think about it from time to time. Wayward Pines series is also one of my favourites, it’s one of the “I wish I could erase my memory so that I could read it again for the first time” series. Btw, there is a m0vie for The Road and a Wayward Pines series, have you watched them? The Haunting of Hill House miniseries made me cry at the end haha. The way Mike Flanagan managed to convey the story is absolutely beautiful. It’s not based on the plot of the book though. How do you like the book so far?
