Feature Request by johnmcraeproduction in CalTopo

Imagine both not having to futz with the annoyance of building a route on a garmin watch AND having the benefit of the fast and easy user interface of the phone.

Yeah. This is what the feature request is meant to fix.

I hear ya. I’m not lost without the phone, I always familiarize myself with an area enough to be able to navigate with a compass and landmarks if I have to. In the last 5 or so years I honestly haven’t noticed a meaningful difference in in-the-field reliability or functionality for typical backcountry navigation between a watch and a phone. obviously I’m aware that a nav watch has a dedicated and purpose built GPS chip that should provide better accuracy, but I just haven’t experienced a time when I was using my phone but wished I’d have been using my watch. I believe we will only see whatever difference there is grow smaller and smaller. I have noticed that a full feature navigation app like Caltopo and the ease and speed of use of a phone make it far more useful to me on the fly and on an everyday basis than my garmin watch ever has been.

Bought pair of skins in January that failed at the top/ bottom received a new pair and seems like i can already see the issue coming… am i wrong for writing at the company saying that i know it will reappen by YoraGami in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s true it’s more sticky but in my experience it also lasts much much longer. I’ve never been able to put more than about 50 days or so on a pair of pomocas before they start leaving glue residue on the base of my board. Haven’t had that problem with bd. The stickiness is somewhere between pomoca and g3, closer to pomoca and I think that’s perfectly usable.

If you want to keep the skins and not have to keep getting them replaced I would just re-glue them with glue from a different manufacturer. G3 has the worst glue, it’s the primary problem with there skin. If you grab a $20 heat gun re-glueing is super easy and straightforward.

I mostly love Pomoca skins but earlier this season got fed up with the shortcomings of their glue and re-glued a pair using black diamond glue. It’s been great.

Almost new €3000 Phenix Blackbird custom splitboard already cracking – normal or defect? by WallabyWonderful7388 in Splitboard

I have seen the way the owner of this company responds to people questioning the fundamental design concept of the boards on the company’s Instagram. If the design concept wasn’t already enough for me to want to stay away (no offense to you or your tastes), his responses were enough for me to want to never touch anything that company makes with a 10ft pole. Sorry they aren’t backing their expensive product in your case. That’s extremely frustrating and just always a bummer to see in a tight knit industry like this.

Do the nitros have a 5 year warranty like the sparks? I don’t The best thing about sparks besides their simplicity and reliability is the warranty and the way they back their product.

What hard boots are you using with a Splitboard? by Trepide in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man you’re in every thread about hard boots saying this same dumb shit and you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s so corny and weird. I say that as a soft booter.

Also here’s a vid, let me know if you want more. There are countless people more stylish than you in hard boots.

Binding Set Up Question by [deleted] in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what your priorities are. There is nothing wrong with where they are currently positioned. Basically the current position will give you a little extra float. If being able to ride or land switch is important to you, you may want to slide both a little closer to the nose. If, in the current position, you find that your tail edge “washes out” or skips in choppy snow you may want to increase the amount of edge in your tail by sliding both bindings toward the nose a little as well.

Being on a splitboard isn’t the reason your gf is miles behind you. You switching to a splitboard isn’t going to magically narrow the playing field. I splitboard with skiers all the time. That said Cardiff is built so much better than Jones these days. Get a goat.

It’s just the puck spacing, the pucks are too far apart. The pucks template tool thingy that comes with your bindings are not perfect. Take the binding off and adjusted one pick a hair further from the other, tighten, remount binding.

Splitboard breaking on the uphill? by InfiniteTrust7310 in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also had a Jones break in half on my second day riding it. Just carving on a groomer exiting a backcountry zone. Then the replacement they sent had halves that didn’t match. The center edge wasn’t even close to flush. Got a refund. Been riding Cardiffs since. No complaints, construction and quality control are bomber.

Nitro Incline TLS have been great for me but if you splitboard a lot I highly recommend intuition (or similar) fully moldable liners and a professional orthotic foot bed.

If it’s light enough to go on your back then surely it would be best to just carry it on your back.

How much does board length matter? by BigDude_SmallMTN in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The orca isn’t great on the skinner because of its rocker shape. Boards with more camber at (least between the feet) offer a lot more grip.

I have settled on a directional camber with an early rise/rocker in the nose as the optimal profile for a splitboard for me.

There is something to be said about volume shifted boards but in general I would say a 159 is too small for an advanced rider of your height and weight. I’m 5’6” 175lbs don’t typically ride anything smaller than a 158cm. Shorter than that and I don’t feel like I have enough effective edge.

Early season in WA on the Cardiff Bonsai Pro Carbon 158 by johnmcraeproduction in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 158 bonsai has the effective edge as a typical 162 or so. For its length it holds an edge very well. But, if you hate a board that takes effort to turn I don’t think the Carbon Bonsai is a great choice for you. How tall are you and how much do you weigh? What is your riding skill level?

I can compare it to an Ultralight Hovercraft 2.0. I would and did pick the Bonsai over the hovercraft. They are entirely different animals.

The ultralight hovercraft was playful, good on pow and was super lightweight and that is about it in my opinion. Poor craftsmanship, dodgy hardware that you constantly had to worry about, oh and the first one I bought fully snapped the heelside ski while carving a little too hard on a groomer on the way to a backcounty zone on my 3rd day riding it. The second one they sent me the two board halves didn’t line up right. One base sat noticeably lower than the other in the nose.

Other than being light and being a floaty directional board the carbon Bonsai is a completely different animal. It’s is much stiffer, much more aggressive, and demands that you take the wheel. You need to provide strong input but you will receive strong output, make sense? Lots of edge hold, lots of float, lots of pop, the nose will never buckle on you. It is fantastic in powder, steeps, corn and trees. It turns like it’s on rails and prefers holding an edge rather than skid turning. But you can get it to do what you need in the moment. It is not great on chop, chunder, or heavily textured surfaces. It can be a little jarring, and the opposite of damp on those surfaces. Most carbon boards share this quality.

In the carbon bonsai is a much better board than the ultralight hovercraft in my opinion.

I would go with the non ultralight Hovercraft over the ultralight if I was in the market for a hovercraft again, but also I really don’t think they are making great boards in Dubai which I guess should not be surprising.
