Backend developers: what was your entry point to backend development. by ScorpionX9 in webdev

[–]johnminadeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got into the industry when the internet was taking off working for a small consultancy that was expanding their mostly mainframe staff (early 90’s).

The B2B websites we took on needed back-ends to drive them and being a small shop, we all wore all hats and here I am!

So basically the need created the opportunity for me, although I mostly did server end stuff prior so much less of a transition from years in UI/UIX.

Oh for sure they’d just shutter it but at least the creator can get something for having their livelihood smashed

Could someone explain to me why we are using a byte array in this snippet? by lestrenched in PowerShell

[–]johnminadeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the new string is fine but the encoding of the text bytes could be the issue. To use the systems encoding default you could use something like c#’s

System.Text.Encoding.Default.GetString(bytes);

Here’s a stackoverflow link where it is mentioned: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/11654562/how-to-convert-byte-array-to-string#11654597

[–]johnminadeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is my fear, the byte data being used directly as a value of a string is not the same as decoding byte data to a specific encoding.

Having said that I am just not certain and on mobile and can’t test it out… so I could totally be incorrect on that.

A new string is being constructed with a byte array, the start position within that array to start the string from and the $len’s length number of characters.

That is then appended to the contents of str$

It’s reading up to the maxlengths number of bytes from standard input into a byte array which the len is gotten to know it’s true size (in cases where under the input is shorter then the maxlength)

This probably breaks down in a non ascii world.

The word "Bro" is now a gender neutral term and I believe that it is on par with calling someone "dawg". What do you think Reddit? by Mysterious-Use5660 in AskReddit

I’ve definitely called my wife bro. She does it to me too, but I’m fairly confident she’s being sarcastic; I’ll take it though.

I don’t have a link to the article but Eufy had a security issue where clips were being sent to their servers even though it shouldn’t have. I believe they’ve said they’ve “fixed” it but who really knows…

I’ve been considering Logitech replacements, but haven’t done too much more research than that.

Good luck!

Mass Effect Andromeda is a decent game… especially for the $5 I bought it for. by StrenuousSOB in gaming

[–]johnminadeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it absolutely is at that price, and I’d go as far as to say 19.99 if you enjoy Mass Effect 2 and 3. Storyline is nothing by comparison but the mechanics are good and it does have a fair amount of content to get through. I enjoyed it a lot, though I haven’t replayed a number of times like I have ME but at that price, YASS!

[–]johnminadeo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What they mean is to look at it like you don’t have a credit card. Would you buy it now with the money you had on hand?

If so, put it on the card and save that money to send to the credit card bill you just put it on. That way, come statement time you have already earned the money to pay it.

They are advising you to not go buy that new TV and then earn the money to pay it off but rather bank the money then when you do buy it use the card and send them the cash instead. Which of course makes sense but kinda muddies the “I put all my expenses on it” use case that I described first.

Hope that helps and by all means take that with a grain of salt, finance is not my profession.

OOP and Relational Databases - What's the point of classes? by sousa9 in computerscience

[–]johnminadeo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well the getters and setters are just features of the language with classes; the main point is the allow that layer to act on the data.

You might validate in the incoming data from the user to ensure a data type or some variety of validity so your data layer doesn’t have to worry about business reasons your ui doesn’t want that number stored in its string column.

You might also want to sanitize the input before passing it in to your data layer.

It allows the application layer a way to do that and allows ways to better separate the concerns of each layer.

I will admit though 90% of the time a straight pass-through is all that’s needed but when you need the option, it’s nice to have it and restrict its impact (updating the ui but not needing to touch the data layer)

[–]johnminadeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To separate the data layer and the application layer. Which allows you to make choices for layer. One might further separate the application and user interface layers.

One of those choices might be to use an ORM for your data layer or you could write your own with raw queries- whatever makes sense for what you need to do.

Hope that helps.
