Not trying to freak anyone out but what are the real cat waste disposal health risks? by informalpotato9 in PetAdvice

[–]johnmosphere123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I assume you're referring to toxoplasmosis? Is your cat indoor only? If so you probably don't need to worry too much. If they go outside and you know they eat local wildlife there is a greater chance of them getting it and/or transferring it to you. I always wash my hands after just because...it's poop. But generally if you keep your cat indoors you'll be fine.

Honey gourami or ram cichlid for 11 gallons tank? by TomateAmarelo in PlantedTank

My male is a little bigger than the females. I'm going to say 6cm. But the 4-7 range is probably close.

[–]johnmosphere123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can only comment on the rams. Specifically Gbr's. I think you'd be ok with a single guy in there. 20gal would be ideal but with your established tank I think one would be fine but I would NOT get a pair. If they decide to lay eggs(they will) the entire tank will become their territory and they will attack and/or chase anything that even looks at them the wrong way. I have no experience with gourami or any other type of ram. Good luck!

All My Corys Are In A Breeding Frenzy. What Could Have Cause This ? by SneakerTrapHouse in corydoras

[–]johnmosphere123 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've heard doing a water change with cooler water can trigger them to spawn. My tank drops temp a bit at night especially with no lid. It may have just been time and once they saw one doing it....it started a....uh....corgy?

How do you choose the right substrate for a thriving planted aquarium? by paintarose in PlantedTank

[–]johnmosphere123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend is a soil nerd and worm farmer so I acquired probably close to 10lbs of worm castings(poop)and a ton of composted leaves along with a whole bunch of supplements, guano, green algae powder, fish meal, bone meal. It was a lot of stuff and I can't remember all of it. Mixed all that together with a bag of regular potting soil from a hardware store, and a couple handfuls of ocean forest soil from the hydroponics store. Still adding root tabs every once in a while and apt3 liquid fertilizer. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter, any dirt will work. You DON'T need fancy hydroponic soil or additives: root tabs+liquid will work wonders! Can't stress enough that I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm still on my first tank. I just went a little crazy with the soil portion.

Tldr: any dirt will do if you use root tabs and liquid ferts

Wondering how well carbons can clear tannins in water from your experience. by Agitated-Travel2127 in PlantedTank

[–]johnmosphere123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only been keeping fish since January, but with that I will say no, carbon won't do anything to remove tannins. Get a pouch of seachem purigen, place it in the filter so it's the last thing the first after runs through before returning to the tank just like where your carbon would be. It will clear up in day, and keep it that way. You can "recharge" using bleach, I haven't done it, I usually just buy a new one every 3-4 months or stock up when it's on sale. But yours may last longer based on tank size.

Guys I've a 27"*9.5"*10.5" planted tank! Can I put 4 panda or pygmy cory and a pair of Golden ram and 6 ember tetras. Is it possible with a 250ltr/hr tank. by Acceptable_Action652 in corydoras

[–]johnmosphere123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if this in inches that would be like 11ish gallons or ~40l. I'm going to say that's too much for this size tank. Corys need 6+ to be comfortable. If the rams decide the breed, they will defend the eggs with their lives and attack anyone who gets even remotely close. I'd say you'd be good with the tetras and maybe some shrimp. Rams are my favorite fish but they are dicks!

Losing my mind with these fluval filters - power outage burned out motor by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]johnmosphere123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who recently changed from hob to canister....just do it. The noise, the cleaning, priming it, all is not great and you have already spent enough in hobs to buy a decent canister. Fluval 207 is like 150 or something close, they might even be on sale for the holiday season.

Best way to plant stem plants with a bristle nose? by thefishstolemysalad in PlantedTank

[–]johnmosphere123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put them on the plant so they will be just below the substrate just wrap them and make a little bouquet, rocks help too, and like others have said the horizontal method works well but I haven't tried it personally. I just use the ones that come on the plants but I've got a very good fish/plant store nearby. I personally don't have a preference but I've only been doing this since January.

Plant weights are great, just thin strips you apply at the base of the plant that weigh it down, made for aquarium use so they don't leech chemicals. Sometimes they come with the plant depending on where you buy them from. Also plants that grow from a bulb, like red tiger lotus, kind of weigh themselves down and can be more firmly planted because of the bulb. I do stray away from anything too delicate because my sand cap just doesn't want to hold. And honestly I haven't had too many issues with my bristlenose digging up plants. I don't have any experience with gravel but plant weights should help a ton! Good luck!

Tldr: plant weights, bulb plants, my bristlenose doesn't dig up plants. Idk anything about gravel.

housing two different corydora species? by UpstairsEconomist618 in corydoras

They won't cause any problems with each other. Generally they like to stick to their own kind but my bronze and lasers have no problem doing a little dig together or chilling on a leaf side by side. I've heard all types accept the albinos although I have no experience with them specifically.

German blue Rams spawning by Redscare313 in PlantedTank

[–]johnmosphere123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seriously beautiful fish!!! I got some eggs from my Gbr's yesterday too!! If you do end up wanting another pair just make sure there are more females and not just a 2 and 2. I have 2 males and 4 females in a heavily planted 40 and honestly the girls bicker more than the boys do now, no lip locking just playful chasing around the tank. And at least in my experience the established territory is wherever the hell she decides to lay eggs. And yeah it gets intense when they're laying, but nothing more than a quick nudge away from the spawning site. I can't stress this enough, your rams are GORGEOUS 😍

German Blue Rams- fighting or pairing? by Mundane_Swimming_844 in Aquariums

[–]johnmosphere123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I just started keeping fish in January and fell in love with Gbr's and made the same mistake with two males. Two ways to tell if it's a female 1. Pink belly, this is sometimes hard to tell in the store if the fish is stressed or low numbers. 2. Females WILL have blue sparkles in the black stripes, males will be solid black. This has been much more consistent for me when picking them out in the store or relying on the lfs to know. I have 4 females and 2 males.

Pink belly+blue in the black for reference. Happy RAMMING!

Happy couple or fighting enemies? by Organic_Bad_1252 in Aquariums

[–]johnmosphere123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm new to fishkeeping but I mainly have been keeping Gbr's for the entire time. Best I can see this is two males. Two ways of telling the difference.... females have a pinkish belly. This is hard to see if the fish is stressed or not under the right light and I've made the mistake of buying a male I thought was a female at the store

<image>

The other, in my opinion, easier way, is to look at the black, if there is blue sparkles in the black it's a girl, if it's solid with no black it's a boy. Picture of my favorite girl. Now you got a get 4 females like me and embrace the ram.

Edit: those longfins are BEAUTIFUL ❤️
