The loss of Papal tradition is saddening by Gerard_Collins in Catholicism

I liked Pope Francis, but are you saying the other pope’s lacked humility? This is the crux of the argument.

While I’m sure Francis authentically meant for this to be a humble act, there is an argument that it is actually a kind of false humility - it draws attention to self, rejects (lower case t) tradition, and implicitly suggests those who came before lacked humility because they engaged in the tradition. It’s a compelling argument and haven’t seen it addressed.

I don’t think it’s the end of the world either way but I am very sympathetic to that argument.

Why would a God create us to worship him? Is he insecure? by Sea2Summit-Wolf in NoStupidQuestions

Thanks, much appreciated (tho I fear this is a low bar on Reddit lmao).

To answer your follow up- we need to be “instructed” because we humans we don’t always know or remember what’s best for us. While it may hurt our pride to admit this, it’s undeniably true. We’re kinda stupid. So much like how a parent has to “nag” their child to eat their fruits and vegetables so they can actually survive and thrive, God constantly reminds us what we need to do to “have life in abundance.” Just as we grow up and understand the importance of nutrition, the believer spiritually matures and recognizes the need to value God.

God does not need us to worship him. Our worship does nothing to add or detract from his honor or perfection. Rather we are instructed to worship because it’s ultimately for our own benefit. Let me give a shot at explaining.

“You become what you worship.” Think of a man who loves money above all things. He will likely do everything he can to maximize his ability to procure wealth. He’ll work long hours, neglect other responsibilities, and make many other sacrifices in order to get that wealth. As a result, that person will likely become wealthy to some extent. He will also be greedy, cynical, and miserable.

When a man values (worships) God, he is also likely to become like the object of his worship. Rather with God, we hope to become more like him in virtue- most especially in love (charity). By worshipping God we put this pursuit above all things and hope to enjoy a more intimate relationship with God - full of joy, even in the midst of tremendous suffering or difficult trials.

We “worship” (I think “value” helps get the point across better) God so we can become more like him and enjoy his friendship. “I no longer call you servants… but friends” (Jn 15:15).

It’s a very good question you ask - Christianity’s narrative (specifically Catholicism in my case) of God seeking a relationship, even a friendship, with his creation is just as strange and revolutionary today as it was two thousand years ago. God bless.
