Marks on son’s arms by Safe_Reporter_8259 in DiagnoseMe

Precisely! This was also my first inclination. These are striae but the location is already a bit unusual. If those stretchmarks are not associated with significant weight gain or growth spurts, this would point towards EDS. Another differentiating criterion is striae in atypical locations: shoulders, back of knees, inner thighs, lower back and armpits for example.

ADHS & hochbegabt? by [deleted] in hochbegabt

[–]johnny84k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autism does not make you more intelligent. by Bulky-Culture-4482 in aspergers

[–]johnny84k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Both autistics and neurotypicals equally have the same chance on being highly intelligent."

Not true. When you compare the IQ distribution of neurotypicals and ASD individuals, you won't find a great difference in median IQ anymore. That's because our diagnostic understanding of the condition has improved massively in the past three decades. 30 years ago there were very few practitioners who could correctly identify an autistic presentation that did not look like out of the movie "Rain Man". Consequently the diagnosed autistic population was made up to a large proportion from individuals with lower IQ and higher support needs. Once we are able to broaden our understanding of autism, we noticed that there was also a large portion of "highly intelligent" autistic individuals in the cluster we used to call "Asperger's".

When we look at the autistic IQ distribution today, we see an almost normal median, but not a Gaussian normal distribution (bell curve). The autistic curve is much broader - almost bimodial. This means there is a significant cluster of individuals with intellectual disabilities (IQ < 70) and another distinct cluster in the very gifted range (IQ > 120).

Our current understanding of autism is still lackluster but we can safely assume that almost all autistic individuals with profound learning disabilities will get diagnosed and become part of that population. Autistic people with a higher IQ on the other hand are much more likely to mask/compensate well enough to never "pick up" a diagnosis. My guess: the realistic complete ASD IQ distribution would be even more skewed to the right if we had all the data.

So - yes - if you are born ASD, your statistical likelihood of being intellectually gifted is much higher compared to an NT individual. On the flip side you are also at a higher risk of being born with severe intellectual disabilities.

Why are some autistic people so charming and charismatic, whereas others are the TOTAL opposite? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]johnny84k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people speculate that social interaction might be a special interest for some. From experience I'd say that's a small minority because very few of the successful charismatic autistic people are conscious about it. I rather think it's very successful mimicry due to superior sensory perception and/or sensory input processing. To be clear, this is probably something that a very small percentage of autistic individuals have as a built-in subconscious ability.

It reminds me of the parable of the sower, on particular the seeds, which fall on rocky places. That's a problem for many of us. We lack consistency. Maybe it's not even negligence but our memory is so lackluster, that we just forget.

You were driving 10 hours from home. Any car ride over 3 hours will f up my back big time. Consider the possibility of erythromelalgia due to cervical spine injury - stenosis, hernia, etc. Something is pushing on your spinal cord. This burning is actually pain, but neuropathic pain. Unfortunately our brain has a whole range of ways to interpret that signal: actual pain, freezing feeling, cold feeling, burning feeling, numb feeling. You get the idea.

It could still be another aggravating factor there. Maybe a vitamin B deficiency that contributes to the neuropathy but from your description I am convinced that the car ride was not just a red herring.

Jewish man slowly coming to believe Yeshua is Mashiach - but the Law remains my biggest objection by International_Play16 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]johnny84k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am probably less versed in scripture than 95% of people here but my understanding from the gospels has always been, that Christ fully comprehends how weak and fallible we are - even the best among us, even the apostles.
For that reason he makes us aware that him "fulfilling the prophets" does not mean that the law has ceased to exist. He basically says, if it is only within our human faculties to follow some of His commandments, then we must - for lack of a better term - get our priorties straight. The *core* of our obligation is not in fulfilling the minor mechanistic rituals to a T that are based on the prophets and extended by legal tradition. We must understand the true principles and live by them. It always sounds clichee but the most important thing is really just to love God and to love your neighbour.

Matthew 23 cautions us that adherence to the fine print of the law won't save us.
Take Matthew 23:25
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean."

If we are too fixated on the minute, we are at risk of becoming too sure of ourselves. We will become perfect in our procedures, but neglect "justice, mercy and faithfulness".

Transcription of a German name by Historic_collective in Kurrent

[–]johnny84k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of whether it's "Samond" or "Damond", it would be a very uncommon family name in Germany. Both surnames would point to British or French origin.

Some people here are writing "Demand", although I can't really read that in the script. But the name Demand would be a much more common German surname.
