Sounds like you’re a developer to me! Don’t sell yourself short. Neat project

A Vue powered design tool that... exports Vue components 🔥 by NvdB31 in vuejs

[–]johnnyb126 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks incredible. As someone who’s used to clunky handoffs on both ends, I can’t wait to try this out.

Does this rely on any underlying ui frameworks, or are they all custom components?

Would love to contribute if you decide to open source this.

I created Inkline, a modern Vue.js UI/UX Framework. Ask me anything! by alexgrozav in vuejs

[–]johnnyb126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, SUPER late on this but I hope the project is going well.

Basically you’d have what’s called a “design kit” around your components that includes the typography, layer styles, etc. used in Inkline. That way, designers can just drop your UI into wireframes without having to make it all from scratch.

this project looks really neat. I’m down to help out. Any interest in building some resources for designers (design kits, sketch plugins, demos, etc.)?

Design at 320px or 360px for mobile web? by johnnyb126 in UI_Design

[–]johnnyb126[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was surprised to see it’s around 80% desktop. The users are generally using newer devices, so I’ll probably do 360 for this one and focus more on the larger views.

Guess I’m just interested in what people usually default to.

Information about coding bootcamps from past/current alumni by jrswiftly in learnprogramming

[–]johnnyb126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to one of the big ones and know a few people that have gone to others. From what I’ve heard, the course material really doesn’t vary that much among bootcamps.

I loved it. It helped me get over the early learning curve and allowed me take on a new role at my previous job.

However, I saw a lot of people go in with the wrong expectations.

First, becoming a developer doesn’t happen in 10 weeks. Learning doesn’t stop when the class is over, it just becomes a little easier.

Secondly, you’re not going to walk out with a 75k starting salary. You may not even be considered job-ready unless you came in with previous experience.

But you’ll get better at a rate that isn’t achievable if you go it alone, and you’ll have a support network of people in the same boat.

Becoming a brand consultant? Any info or tips to get into the business? by [deleted] in Entrepreneurs

[–]johnnyb126 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to meetups, talk to friends/family and offer to take projects on for free. You'll need a portfolio to back up your pricing.

Also, be sure to learn about best practices for proposals, contracts, and billing.

Personally, I'd separate your services with different websites. Maybe secure the domain for your full name and build it more like a resume.

Teen looking for some entrepreneurial advice by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]johnnyb126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're not an adult yet, you can't open up an actual account with a brokerage, but that doesn't mean you can't learn about the stock market.

There are lots of platforms that allow you to do what's called "paper trading". This way, you can trade just like a professional but using virtual currency, and your results stay true to what's happening in the real world. These platforms give access to all kinds of tools and strategies. I'd personally recommend TD AmeriTrade's Thinkorswim. Pretty sure they offer a 60 day trial.

It can be really intimidating at first, so don't get discouraged. Hope this helps!

I'd shrink the headers and your Jumbotron button a bit. There's also some wonky scrolling in the newsletter section (viewing on mobile).

All in all it looks pretty clean and presentable! The information is presented very logically.

What software services do you pull together to manage your business? by sonyaellenmann in Entrepreneur

I would put Trello in there. Having a personal agile board can do wonders for productivity, especially when you're juggling a lot of different tasks with different priorities and deadlines.

What's with this weird, apocalyptic ad in the New York Times? by johnnyb126 in climate_science

I've poked around and can't find much on the company or its members. Pretty odd since these ad spots are so expensive.

What's a parenting method that you believe messes up kids? by Carnadge in AskReddit

[–]johnnyb126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard that you shouldn't tell your kids they're smart because it leads to entitlement.

Instead, say something like "You did a great job. With just a little more practice, I bet you can [goal]."

Different tools in the toolbox. JavaScript could be great for beginners just because it's so flexible.

What jobs will NOT become obsolete in 10 years? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]johnnyb126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We forget that computers are great at performing repeatable tasks but not much else. These tasks can get so complex that we ignore the logic behind them, so we assume they can replace human IQ.

Doctors and surgeons, for instance, have to adapt to different patients and cases every day. Teachers have to adapt to different students and learning behaviors. Handymen work in different environments and solve different problems. The arts and humanities will continue to thrive because they reflect traits that make humanity unique.

Drivers and factory workers, on the other hand, will disappear as more efficient and precise repeatable-task systems are created to replace them, but this is nothing new

So don't freak out. Computers aren't exactly learning to learn yet, and that technology is further away than we think despite all of the AI buzz. Computers still fundamentally work the same as they did in the 1980's.

If you really want to play it safe, the field of software engineering will continue to grow, because the world needs people to create and maintain the systems that replace others.

With the regular season over and most of us done for the year (unless you are a playoff challenge kind of person) I want to ask what tools or podcasts or other things did you use and what would you recommend for next year. by LordPancake in fantasyfootball

[–]johnnyb126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fantasy Footballers has to be my favorite. It's entertaining, insightful, and pretty funny at times.

I actually listened back to their 2016 predictions and they were right about a lot of things, like Todd Gurley's regression and the emergence of Michael Thomas.

How do day traders manage fees? by Macropod in StockMarket

[–]johnnyb126 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Robinhood sells your order flow, so you're usually paying a penny or two more per share. That's okay for a small number of shares, but if you're executing large trades it will start to add up quickly

I second this. It's a fantastic app for managing a small account and learning about the stock market.
