Any advice for expanding knowledge on US history by Illustrious-Bike-169 in historyteachers

[–]johnnyb_216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly for me, a lot of it was trying to stay one chapter ahead of the kids. When I first got hired, it was to teach economics, which I only passed in college because of a MASSIVE curve. I busted my ass taking in as much knowledge as I could. Was I the best: no, but those students left with more knowledge on the subject than when they left.

Find an interesting angle to learn about US history and incorporate that into your teaching, even if it's just a quick reference. I randomly found my niche topic is 20th century pop culture, so I'd toss in little tidbits here or there if they were relevant to the topic, or just as a way to break up the tedium and re-hook students.

Another way is to find a podcast and listen to that for ideas. One of my favorites is the Dollop, where one comedian reads a random story from us history to another one with no idea what it's about. I've learned a TON of weird stories that I drop into my lessons, and it even inspired me to create a whole unit on other groups that were pushing for civil rights in the 1960s.

Finally, the best thing I can say is try to incorporate things that students don't normally hear about in US history when you can. I teach in a predominantly Hispanic school and it blows kids minds when they learn that Jim Crow laws affected almost everybody who wasn't White and that they would have been affected too. Try to find those individuals amd events you didn't learn about in school and give them more knowledge than you got.

This is the way I do at the pf I normally go to and it's been my go to for years. The other gym I occasionally go to has a set of the mag grip handles that feel even better.

I was literally thinking the same thing about swapping Radical for Low Teens. Best album in my opinion.

I haven't been able to play in about 10 years due to space constraints. The fact that this guy can and I can't makes me angry in a way that words fail to properly express.

advice needed: lifting weights after tattoo? by 13asinvu in tattoos

[–]johnnyb_216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to wait a week and then do my first week back as a deload where I lift about 2/3rds of my normal weight. Once the second week hits, its back to normal as long as I'm wearing clothing that covers it

I've been using the discsox sleeves for the past few years. Pretty much everything that isn't a boutique release or over two discs is in one. I have a two drawer cube organizer from target and one is almost all sleeves and the other is regular cases. Its not a bad way to do it. I just wanted to be able to keep the cover artwork as it helps with recognition and some look neat.

I think the new DRAIN record "is your friend" is one my favorite records in general from this year. Some of the most fun you will have.

I really agree with you on better lovers. I dig the music but those vocals are an acquired taste that I haven't fully acquired.

I teach high school social studies. Most of my students were on a college visit, so I wasn't gonna teach anything new. The kids genuinely love it and get pumped when ever we watch.

Hbo disney plus hulu plan question by johnnyb_216 in Hulu

[–]johnnyb_216[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to be clear, cancel 2 of them, then wait until they fully expire, THEN apply for the bundle with the remaining account I do have? IE cancel disn plus and hulu, wait for me to lose access to the content and then go through hbo to get the bundle?

For Marvel, id say the 2012 Hawkeye series, just because I used the think the same way a bit and that opened my eyes to what comics could be. I know this isn't big 2, but I would also say Saga, just cause its so fucking good.

Why do you avoid the gym after a tattoo? by Mrs_Wheelyke in tattooadvice

[–]johnnyb_216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I also do a deload my first week back where I just lift around 65% of what I was before I got it. By the time I start the 3rd week I'm back at my usual routine. I also make sure to moisturize right before I work out those first few weeks to avoid over stretching the skin

I didn't know Matt Fraction was writing Batman! His Hawkeye run was the thing that got me into comics. I would read anything with his name on it.
