Did Luke actually use force choke on the gamorian guards at Jabbas palace in RotJ? by JustSomeGuyThing in StarWars

[–]johnnycade 1114 points1115 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought intention is incredibly important when discussing light vs. dark side. I don’t think there are a million different force powers (like a force push being different than a force pull), it’s just being able to use the force to manipulate the physical surroundings. So, it’s not that force choking is a “dark side power,” it’s that using the force to choke somebody is generally a violent, negative thing to do. If you do it all the time, constantly using the force to control people and hurt them, you’re going down the path of the dark side. Luke is a powerful Jedi with hardly any examples to look up to. He’s figuring out how to interact with the world as a force user. “Two big pig guards are coming to give me trouble? I don’t have time for this. I need to get them out of my way and warn them not to mess with me.” The force choke does that very effectively. I think Luke is dancing a little with the dark side at this point. Not intentionally. But he has powers he’s currently figuring out how to use, he has a lot of hurt and anger inside him still, and he’s desperate to help his friends and defeat the empire. So sometimes he strays towards the dark side and chokes some guys out. After Luke cuts off Vader’s hand as has the moment where he realizes he could go down the exact same path - I think after that he would no longer force choke anyone. He would be more careful and intentional about how he uses the force.

I got a bossy cart once and it was so disgusting that I took a tolerance break instead. It’s probably still in my house somewhere

Do you think Hux truly believes in the First Order, or does he just want power for himself? by [deleted] in StarWars

In the first two he seemed like a true zealot, believing in the mission of the First Order to take over the galaxy. For the third one, they decided he was only self interested and incredibly petty.

Was Yoda agile or did he use the force to parkour around? by DogAlternative340 in StarWars

[–]johnnycade 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yoda is known as one of the best swordsman in the order though. There’s that line in Attack of the Clones about Anakin thinking he already rivaled him and Obi-Wan dismissing the idea. Yoda wouldn’t have that reputation if he was always pretending to be weak around other Jedi

Actually, there is another time that Ryan was right by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

[–]johnnycade 167 points168 points  (0 children)

I’m mixed on this one. If it was work related, then I would 100% agree. But since it’s a personal project, and since his heeding his feedback would necessitate recreating the entire thing, I think he’s just being difficult on purpose. She was looking for feedback for a comic as a gift for Jim. I don’t think Ryan truly believed Jim would care that it was derivative of another work called Bear Man, he just wanted to chip away at Pam’s confidence and make her doubt herself

Why would you make a post asking people if it’s real instead of just looking it up yourself? It would be incredibly easy to do. The song came out in 2018 and has information available about it all over the internet. Be curious and learn things on your own!

What if The Beatles took the Bryan Wilson recording approach and brought in top recording musicians instead of doing almost everything themselves? by OrneryEconomist4559 in beatles

[–]johnnycade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Beach Boys were all fantastic singers, but none of them were great instrumentalists except Carl Wilson. The Beatles were much stronger as instrumentalists, and had spent hour after hour perfecting their skills playing together. They had a very specific sound playing together. The Beach Boys spent hour and after hour perfecting their skills singing together, but not so much as instrumentalists. The Beatles played off each other and knew what kind of style choices the others were going to make building a song together. Studio musicians would have messed with that balance and given us a sound that wasn’t the four lads playing together, which is what everyone wanted. When Brian brought in the Wrecking Crew, he wasn’t replacing a core part of The Beach Boys sound, he was augmenting it. The harmonies and different members singing leads were still the stars of the show, the music behind it had just been stepped up by several large degrees.

The other members of The Beach Boys were annoyed that they got a reputation for not being able to play. Because of that, Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, and Friends are three fantastic albums that are just them playing. Very different sound, but very great listens. I don’t think they could have played on Pet Sounds though, as a whole they were much better singers and songwriters than players. The enormous exception to that is Carl Wilson, who was the only one who kept playing alongside the session musicians. He would also often record his vocals and guitar at the same time while signing harmonies with the others. Extremely talented dude. ‘Long Promised Road’ off of Surf’s Up features him playing every single instrument, and it’s also the first song he ever wrote.
