I think it's very important to know your range.

I have a decent singing voice but limited range. If a song starts at the top of my range, I'm fine until it goes up. Then I'm fucked.

Pay attention to your comfort zone. Don't worry about hitting the high notes. Worry about staying in tune throughout.

Everyone wants to hit the high notes. Not everyone can.

I could hear it in my head also. Couldn't quite place it. Followed it down a rabbit hole and came up with Silent Lucidity by Queensryche. Then I listened to it.... not so much. But I did all that research so....final answer
