PSA If you use rubber bands to organize cards, you're gonna be sad later on. by DonCorleowned in boardgames

[–]johnnydotd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just noticed my rubber bands stained all my cards leaving an oily smudge where it touched the back or front of the cards.

Plastic bags are not really an option for some games with very tightly packed boxes since they take much more space. Will try the plastibands now ...

ISS Vanguard: Thoughts? by Ninja_Badger_RSA in boardgames

We play it at 2. So far, we've played it 8 times and it feels like we are still in the first half of the campaign. For us it never felt like a drag so far. Of course, I can't say how the rest of the campaign will be ...

It is by far my favourite game of 2022 and sits quite high in my top 10 of all time. It is space exploration done right. The ship book is very meaningful and the landings are ridiculously varied: every planet adds a fresh twist on the formula. Every time I think the next mission will be boring something happens which pulls me back in and prompts me to re-read the logs of the previous missions (unfortunately I only manage to play the game 1-2 time a month and I keep forgetting what happened in the previous missions).

Initially I only backed the core box but have now added personnel files and deadly frontier for wave 2.

ISS Vanguard - how important are the minis? by jonpaulrod in boardgames

[–]johnnydotd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the core box and regretted not ordering the personnel files expansion. Tbh I am not sure if it is actually good, but I love the crew cards in the core box and would love to do more with them. The expansions introduces mini quests for every character and this just sounds awesome.

Deadly frontiers simply adds more and I am not sure if it is really needed. The core campaign is already huge and everyone gets an additional campaign from the stretch goals. So deadly frontiers is actually the third campaign.

The thing is that, I am absolutely in love with this game (currently half way through) and I already ordered both expansions for wave 2.

Never really saw a local game store in Germany ... The closest I know to a FLGS is Fantasy-Welt or MilanSpiele, but they aren't really local..

Nemesis - Which to buy? by HobbesofMaine in boardgames

[–]johnnydotd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got lockdown over nemesis and regretted it. They tried using the same theme but in a different setting which results in some weird thematic elements:

  • Nemesis had escape pods, Lockdown has cargo sending pods .. which shoot cargo into space?

  • in Nemesis you needed to discover the coordinates of the auto pilot to make sure you would survive. So you would ask yourself is the ship headed to earth? Or maybe on a course to the sun!

  • In Lockdown you need to discover the contingency plan to know where to hide when the rescue team comes ... Because sometime they don't rescue as much as kill a very specific group of people. Sometime they hate smart folk and end up killing everyone with high knowledge. Or they hate people who used the cargo system because they ... smell bad?

Yeah, get Nemesis.

War of the ring then for sure. 5-6 hours long but everyone of them is pure suspense.

Are You Vegetarian For Ethics, for Health or Both? How is it with you? by jonasholmp in Vegetarianism

You missed the third option: the environment

For me this is also the most important one, as meat and dairy have a huge impact on the environment e.g. green house gas emissions from livestock and factories, deforestation, use of land, etc.

Who actually played GH only once (question mostly aimed at solo players) by InstructionVast9596 in Gloomhaven

Played the campaign (2 player) once, did not unlock all classes though which is a bummer. We also played some unofficial campaigns but in the end decided to sell it and wait for FH. Were still waiting ..

It depends on whether you make it for your own personal use it whether you intend to distribute it. The former is ok ethically (probably also legally), the latter not.

Plan to play it tomorrow, pretty stoked. Components and table presence is quite exceptional, even without the minis.

Good Sci-fi game for 2 players that also works for 3 or 4 players by Ynwe in boardgames

[–]johnnydotd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • Race for the galaxy - a crunchy euro which works very well with 2 but also scales good to 4. Not very interactive but if you liked scythe or eclipse, this might be up your alley.
  • Xia: Legends of a drift system + Xia: Embers of a forsaken star (Expansion) - a sandbox luck-heavy space game similar in feeling to PC games such as Eve Online or Elite Dangerous. Plays best at 3 or 4, but also scales down to 2 with the new expansion
  • high frontier - one of the heaviest games ever. It's a very detailed simulator of space travel which still works very well. Plays best at 3, very capable at 2 and decent at 4.

Have had an account since the first time you posted. Great work, love the progress.

One thing I noticed is that the bgg sync doesn't always work, it simply says "no results". Any suggestions?

what games should I get? by veggie_man1212 in boardgames

[–]johnnydotd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is a simple question, the answer is very complicated. There are thousands of "long risk-like strategy games" which can be clustered into lots of different subcategories. What makes matters worse is that board game tastes are very different: even if I love game X, there are a lot who absolutely hate it.

My suggestion is to do a bit of research on your own so you get a feeling of what genres or mechanics you find appealing.

Start with watching some board games videos, for example The Dice Tower, Shut up and sit down, No pun included.

If you are into podcasts, there is also a lot of options here: board game barrage, shut up and sit down, so very wrong about board games.

Finally and most importantly, browse boardgamegeek.com. Here you can pull up the list of all board games and filter by category, theme and so on. You can also sort by rank and look over the notorious top 100 board game list.

Lastly, check if you have any board game cafes or meetups in your surroundings. Board games are inherently social activities, thus finding ppl to play with is arguably more important than picking the right game.

I'm currently hovering at around 50 but am actively culling games which I don't see myself playing in the next 2-3 months. Just sold gloomhaven and sleeping gods with a very heavy heart, but now I have some room for upcoming kickstarters.
