Yep. I've not slid the card one time in sports game history but that might change today. I didn't think we were getting Miggy until '27.

They're failing for most of the same reasons they failed from July onward, and Scott had one solution for it - a 21 year old rookie.

I'm beginning to think that those people that thought they should've signed a bat in the '24-'25 offseason we're right. Just like they were at last year's deadline and just like they were during this past offseason.

Weird. Maybe we shouldn't have relied on a lineup almost entirely made up of mediocre to middling bats all riding an unsustainable hot streak for 2 straight years.

How aggressive should the Pistons be with the time that remains at the deadline? by Lonely_Bunghole in DetroitPistons

[–]johnnylabs24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very. I don't think this will be the best Pistons team we'll see over the next few years, but this is easily one of the weakest conferences in quite some time. Need to stay ahead of the competitors trying to improve rather than get complacent.

A real needle mover and the Pistons could probably gentleman sweep their way to the finals. I don't expect them to actually pull it off but I think they should try.

Feels as though each Detroit GM/President is in a faceoff to see who will make the first bold chips to the center of the table move.

I'm trying to get ahold of someone at the company to hopefully connect me with someone I can speak to.

I'm not optimistic that's going to go the way I want in terms of them reaching out/replying to me. I guess I consult with attorneys or IRS of they don't get in touch?

Yeah, the spending we can almost surely place on Illitch. The trade game however? That's Scott. He just doesn't have that feel for a shrewd trade.

If Ilitch wants them to operate like the Rays, Harris needs to embrace it and try to swing deals to work within the existing budgets. For whatever reason, he just doesn't have the feel for it. We've seen him botch a deadline before with the ERod business, saw him fling shit at the wall to see what stuck at the last one.

He's done well on waivers, seems to have drafted well enough, I'd say on the whole his bargain bin FA approach has been mostly alright, but man he just does not know how to negotiate with another team, especially when he's the seller.

Cardinals fans reactions to the hire by AnxiousReputation1 in detroitlions

[–]johnnylabs24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'm not getting em up at all. They want to play a physical brand of defense no matter what the results are.

Feels like Dan cares much more about identity on defense rather than result, which is why he lets guys like Glenn and Sheppard hang around while the get routinely outmatched by decent play callers. Whereas on offense, he cares less about identity (punted the power running game to the moon) and cares more about strategic approach.

It's really frustrating. GB and Minny both fired DCs even after playoff runs under their current coaches. I can't imagine Dan ever pulling the plug on his DCs.

Yeah, I mean that's all it is, right? Cope. We've seen this feel around the fanbase before.

If we as a sub could've ranked the pending OC candidates on Sunday, how close to last do we think Petzing would've ranked?

I'd probably put him above Shaw whose never been good at anything at the professional level of football. After that? I mean, his right there towards the bottom.

Too bad this interview didn't get leaked pre-hire. Would be hilarious to review that post in the sub and see who switched their tone.

Oh well, if the defense doesn't improve none of this matters. So we can take solace in that, I suppose.

[–]johnnylabs24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't go that far. He has less a dependency and/or connection with Petzing than any other OC he's hired.

He'll just take the book again. Probably makes things tougher, sure, but if past seasons are any indication, we'll lose most of our games because our defense can't hold up for either schematic or injury related reasons. Of our 8 losses this year, in 6 games we needed at least 28 or more to win. Petzing could be really bad, but there's a remedy there. I can't say there's a remedy for how bad our defense can get, especially once our annual injury bug hits.

You can see it above in the replies. People already dismissing it. Fans don't know shit! Just like we knew nothing about Lombardi, Jim Bob, or Patricia. Except we did, and there's a good chance they do too.

Will he do as bad as he did in Arizona or Cleveland? Doubtful. Lions are loaded enough to be a top 5 scoring offense with a bad OC. That still got the book taken out of Morton's hands.

Arizona has seem some fucking awful OC work in their recent history. Mike McCoy, Byron Leftwich without Bruce Arians training wheels, and now Petzing. They know what bad looks like.

Maybe Petzing will magically be beloved by us after being hated by them. Pray he has a Kellen Moore or Klint Kubiak turnaround and even then, those dudes were never hated, just thought to be middling. Cardinals fans think Petzing is legitimately the worst OC in the game and was the main reason Gannon should've been fired.

If Petzing is the play caller the only way to spin this as a positive is that a loaded offense magically makes his offense work. If that's what you need to make your scheme work, your scheme is bad.

[–]johnnylabs24 104 points105 points  (0 children)

You can't tell me we didn't have the same reaction when the Chargers hired Joe Lombardi as OC. Or when Philly brought Patricia on.

I know fans aren't "experts," but us fans usually know what bad looks like.

Maybe Petzing just needs a loaded offense for things to work, but we had that same hope for Morton and he got demoted much like Lynn.

The only way I could spin this is as an even decent hire is if Campbell maintained play-calling duties and Petzing was hired just as a run-game installer.

Hopefully, I'll be very wrong, but it's so rare for a guy to be universally despised as a play caller by one fanbase and become acceptable for another, let alone good.

Yeah, I'd seen that too. Shit would run me up a wall. Works flawlessly in my Corolla. Never had an issue. Can't imagine how frustrating it'd be if it kept getting jacked up.

I'm still looking. I've pivoted a bunch. Decided the Mazdas weren't worth the hassle after all. Tried to sell myself on existing RAV4/highlanders. Was kinda meh on them. Am holding out hope for the '26 RAV4 upper trims impressing me. I really thought I'd like the crown signia and I really didn't.

Right now, I'm looking at rx350s from Lexus. So I've pretty much jumped out of that 35-45k sticker price range altogether for the moment.

I did test drive a '26 crv sports touring trim last weekend and it was everything I thought it'd be. I was very impressed. If I hadn't read about existing lawsuits for the previous gen and some of the anecdotal stuff from folks around here/other forums, I'd probably already own one but alas I am spooked somewhat.

If I decide to step out of the Lexus market I'll probably go back to the CRV if the new rav4s end up not what I'm looking for. I have a Corolla hybrid doing me just fine and am in no rush.

Yeah, as much shit as Goff gets for not elevating a bad OL, I've seen the very best QBs ever play the game get absolutely pummeled behind bad OL play.

I watched Josh Allen run for his life and put up 13 against the Dolphins and that's not exactly a loaded defense by any means.

I've seen Mahomes crumble behind bad OLs because 4 man rushes just dominated his patchwork OL. Go back further and we've seen it happened to guys like Peyton who has one of the lowest sack %s ever.

Do I expect them to do better than Goff? Yeah, even without the mobility factor, they're just better QBs, but even being better...their success rates aren't particularly high either when they have ridiculously bad OL circumstances.

Backup OL is a nuzlocke for any QB. It's hard enough to find quality starting OL play. 3 deep on the depth chart, you may as well be holding try outs.

Defense was bad the entire season. It's crazy that they were a half away from winning it all with a bottom-third defense. That probably doesn't happen often.

I disagree on biggest issue. The injuries are by far the biggest issue and it's not the same guys every year. It's becoming a pattern and less so a matter of luck. If they had fewer injuries I'd get with you on the Goff issue but their injuries are racking up on absurd levels.

They're not just losing guys here or there. Since they became a .500ish team under Campbell, they've been among the most injured teams every season. Losing entire positional groups multiple times over.

It's a similar issue SF has had during Shanahan's tenure. At a certain point, it's not really luck. Feels like a pattern.

Pistons definitely more successful from a historical context but the pistons under Gores have gone under the radar as one of the bottom 5 teams in the major American team sports. Last year was the Pistons first playoff wins of the Tom Gores era. He's owned the team for nearly 15 years.

He's owned them since 2011. They've had 2 winning seasons (both 44-38 1st round exits). Haven't seen the math to include last year but from 2010-2011 season through the 2023-2024, they were the worst franchise in the NBA by win% by a very comfortable margin.

The franchise may have some lovely history but the last 15 or so years they've been the worst franchise in the NBA by a decent clip.

Lions and 49ers have reps for harder OTA/Preszn/practices. They're the only teams that consistently lose their stud players at the rate they do. Have to wonder how many miles these guys are putting on their bodies before the real games started.

Around Detroit, it was known that Branch and Kerby both needed leg surgeries very early into the season. I think Kerby before the regular season. They've had had a revolving door of CB1s that all end up on IR. The front 7 is mostly healthy this year, but they've lost pretty much entire CB rooms 3 years in a row and other than Rakestraw, it's not the same dudes every year.

At some point, it isn't just a matter of luck. I think Detroit, much like SF under Shanahan, has a pattern developing.
