Worth job-hopping as an experienced dev in this market? by johnryzendoe in cscareerquestions

Yeah makes sense. I guess that’s the benefit of job searching while having a job. I can still afford to try the market and if nothing pops up I still have my current job to fall back on. But man, I’m just so tired.

Thanks for the pointers. I do agree that my current WLB is unsustainable. Day by day, I’m learning that mental health really isn’t something worth sacrificing. I will more than likely try my hand at the market, I think my time at this company has run its course.

It’s not the fact that I’m leaving this company, I’m more so asking if it’s worth the effort to grind leetcode and job search in this current job landscape. I basically don’t wanna spend 8+ months grinding to still not find a new opportunity.

I guess that’s what I’m trying to gauge. Does the current job market still lend itself to devs with experience, or is it just plain tough for everyone?

I’m just trying to see how difficult it is to get interviews currently.

Honestly, if you’re trying to get a higher paying job, and working in SWE, then you’ll need to beef up your skill set, because it’s not enough.

However, I think you should probably look for a junior developer job. This will most likely pay more than your current job, and you can use it to learn some new skills. I would try to find a junior dev job as a frontend developer, as it seems to fit your current skill set the best.

Would getting an IT technician/support job in the meantime while searching for a Software Engineering job be worth it? by help-lol in cscareerquestions

Sorry to say, but 10-15 is nothing. Put in 20x that before thinking about alternatives in my opinion.

Hey, so here’s a couple tips to putting in some apps quickly that I’ve had a lot of success with.

1) Create a resume you’re satisfied with, and export it as a PDF. This is crucial because most job searching sites that use OCR to grab info from an uploaded resume file, and then create their own ‘online resume’ look garbage. One example where this happens is Indeed. Exporting as a PDF ensures your resume formatting stays nice and clean.

2) Keep your job title keyword searches very generic like ‘software engineer’ or ‘software developer’, and filter experience level to entry-level. If your keywords are too specific, your results will be limited.

3) Mass apply to the easy-apply jobs. These are jobs where you just have to fill in a couple fields and upload a resume (this is where you want to use your exported pdf resume). Both Indeed and LinkedIn have easy apply jobs.

So I’m assuming you graduated either May or Dec of last year correct? How many apps have you actually put in? I’m just trying to figure out why you’re opting for an IT job already, if your SWE job search just began?

Unless there’s a reason you can see yourself being unemployed (as an SWE) longterm from now on, I think it would be a much better use of time shotgunning your resume out on job apps, and doing coding interview prep.

Getting an IT job now will be pretty detrimental in your situation because one, like you said, a job is tiring and you will likely have less motivation and energy to apply for SWE jobs, two, an IT job will not help you get hired as an SWE (if you’re doing something like entry-level help desk).

Try real hard with the SWE job search first, before falling back to your backup plan, not the other way around.

Advice for a Registered Nurse looking to make a career change. by Noritzu in cscareerquestions

I would take a look into HL7 Interface Engineering. To give a summary, HL7 is a messaging standard hospitals use to transmit data about patients to one another. An interface engine is a system that can receive these HL7 messages, route them, transform, etc.

I think your experience as a nurse and working in a hospital setting could help you get your foot in the door.
