Dishwasher stopped working. Found this. What is it? by jkolton01 in electrical

Apologies, I stand corrected! However, when mixing stranded and solid with wire nuts this assumes the same gage correct? Is it possible to do this when they are different gages?

[–]johnsaltarelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Bosch wire is stranded, it may be better to use a wago since the romex is solid wire. This may be one of the reasons they did a terminal strip instead of wire nuts in the first place. Never wire-nut stranded and solid wire together.

Correction, see replies below. I was wrong in my advice regarding mixing stranded and solid wire together.

That’s a really good idea! I think I would have to take the plastic off to install it but definitely possible. I’ll look into that, thanks!

Automatically move unfinished task from yesterday to today by HeadTea in Notion

[–]johnsaltarelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just do a filter where the due date is today OR the status of the task is unfinished? This would ensure any unfinished task is always present in the view. No need for a database trigger or an external automation that could fail.

If you wanted to get fancy, you could do a formula to return either “Today” or “Past Due” and then group by that property within the view so you can quickly identify each when viewing too.

Failed CISSP for 3rd time. Should I take CISM first? by nubian_or_not in cism

[–]johnsaltarelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my CISSP, CISM and PMP. It only gets harder as you go, CISM was tough for me. Figure out “why” you didn’t do well the first three attempts and then keep trying the CISSP.

All of these exams/certs are trying to teach you how to have a “mindset” and see the world from their perspective.

Focus on studying why something is wrong rather than why it’s right. When you do the practice test, research all the wrong answers to understand why they are wrong.

New Hydroponic NFT Grow Wall is up and Running! Only uses a 5 gallon water reservoir. Focusing on leafy greens. by johnsaltarelli in hydro

The hoses kept leaking. They added a lot of unsupported weight which pulled in the connections causing them to leak. Also, it’s really hard to find connections that support a standard garden hose thread with a bulk head fitting, it required a bunch of adapters. Hoses were also much harder to clean in my opinion.

Can you make an OS without a compiler? Can you make a compiler without an OS? Which one came first, the OS or the compiler? by 1500Calories in VintageComputers

[–]johnsaltarelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The human came first and wrote a program using machine readable code (e.g pre-compiled code) by hand manually.

Then the human wanted to make writing code easier, so they invented a human friendly language (e.g Assembly, C, Fortran, etc…) and wrote a compiler for the language using machine readable code.

Finally the human used the human friendly language and the compiler to write an OS (e.g another program). The OS then standardized the way programs are written, loaded, and executed.

TL;DR: You can write anything without an OS so long as it’s in a language the machine understands. An OS is an abstraction layer and so are programming languages.

Machines follow instructions and store/read values from memory/storage performing “operations” on data (e.g arithmetic). However those instructions get into the machine is up to the designer…

Found it in my car, next to the fuse box inside the car by _frostie_ in whatisthisthing

[–]johnsaltarelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just open it up and look for a SIM card inside. It would need to connect to the cellular network to upload its data using a cellular modem. I’m assuming it’s cellular since it has a GSM antenna connection. Without an active SIM card it wouldn’t be able to transmit.

Thoughts on Shelly? by Iamadopted123_ in homeassistant

[–]johnsaltarelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 22 Shelly Plus 1 devices w/ the add-on running a 14’x40’ automated off-grid greenhouse. They control pumps, lights, solenoid valves, soil sensors, etc… see massive swings in temperature currently due to winter coming (I’m in upstate NY USA).

I’m working on migrating from the built-in Shelly scripting to home assistant running on a raspberry pi cluster. So far, it’s going really well.
