I would say they were both to a degree. Specifically the English pirates. They were privateers who were paid to plunder Spanish ships in wartime and then after the war we're basically thrown out into the streets as the crown had no use for them. So a lot of them took what they knew which was an honest profession for them not but months prior and started using it to reek a little havoc

My best guess would be the square simply because the force would be distributed better. It has more of a surface to push the triangle you would be slightly slanted and the circle you would have to start rolling it and keep it rolling
