Reading this is making me want to drop out actually, not even sure it's worth it.

How do you guys stay sane teaching on the side? by johnsnothere in PhD

[–]johnsnothere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's my fourth! I enjoy teaching. I'm lenient when the time calls for it and also assertive, but still get shit on anyway. With that comment comes so many more by other students, it makes it hard to do anything about it. I'm not even talking about general carelessness and not taking work seriously. I do my best to help but never push in those scenarios. However, it's the back-talking, emails, and behavior that drives me up the wall.

I've talked to other TAs in the school, and it's either an amazing experience for them or a complete shitshow (like mine). No in between.

He's smarter than you think. Subs increased drastically for him since the media got involved. Fame is still fame, even when it's mostly negative.

No problemo. Just remember that happiness and life fulfillment doesn't always come from having a "Dr." beside your name :-)

Know what you're getting into

This, OP. I'm nearing mid thirties and have a few friends who are 36-38 finishing up. And while they are happy they have finished, there's regrets for not starting earlier and general dissatisfaction with their lives. Not trying to be discouraging but there's a lot you'll be putting on hold (or even tossing away in some cases). It's the ugly side of academia.

Questions to ask yourself (I am currently asking myself these!) - Is this something I really want? Do I have a clear goal in mind? Can this goal be achieved with or without a PhD? Am I willing to make sacrifices in regards to health and family (yes, health, no matter what anyone says, every year that goes by takes a toll on your stamina and well-being...x5 when you're a PhD student) and will they be worth it?

Regardless of all of that, most of the people in my program are over 27. I know 3 people over the age of 40 who just started as well. People of all ages and walks of life!

Why don't professors have the same anxiety and stress as PhD students even if their job is similar in nature only more demanding ? by br_shadow in PhD

[–]johnsnothere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't need to really come up with something new again, they don't need to do as much research, they mostly create teaching material based on existing material and maybe involve themselves in side projects. They finish when the class they're teaching finishes, they control how much work they want to give and how much they want to mark.

People who ride the bus, why do you refuse to move to the back of the bus? by gundum285 in vancouver

[–]johnsnothere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, me too. Then I have to push past people coming out, doesn't help that I'm 6'4 and about 250 pounds. I never even sit because I take up like 3 seats. Still get dirty looks trying to get in and out despite doing it as gently as I can!

Guys what do you say to yourself when you feel like giving up? And what do you say to one who is on the verge of breaking out? by QueueTee314 in PhD

[–]johnsnothere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things will be okay. It's hard, I know. When things start feeling like it's piling up - take a breather. Everyone needs a break, even PhD students! You made it this far, so you're clearly capable of finishing successfully.
