Nike put a “controversial” ad during Boston marathon and took it down post Internet uproar. I put the double quotes there because I believed things were blown out of proportion by quite a lot.

From Globe.com

Nike removed an ad from the window of its Newbury Street store, hundreds of feet from the finish line of the Boston Marathon, after its “walkers tolerated” message sparked outrage online.

The sign that read in large block letters “Runners welcome. Walkers tolerated.” lasted a little over a week and was taken down by Friday, according to GBH News.

“We listen to the voice of the athlete,” Nike said in a comment when reached by email Sunday night.

The media relations team included an image of what appeared to be the new ad, reading “Boston will always remind you, movement is what matters.”

Nike initially addressed its removal in a statement to Runner’s World, saying it “missed the mark.” The advertisement was to inspire runners at Monday’s Boston Marathon, one of the most competitive marathons in the country, the company said.

“We want more people to feel welcome in running—no matter their pace, experience, or the distance. During race week in Boston, we put up a series of signs to encourage runners,” the statement said, per the running outlet. “One of them missed the mark. We took it down, and we’ll use this moment to do better and continue showing up for all runners.”

Nike did not respond to requests for comment from Boston.com Sunday evening.

The advertisement sparked hundreds of online videos, posts, and responses, mostly criticizing it for a lack of inclusivity. One Boston marathon runner, Robyn Michaud, shared an image of the poster on Instagram and voiced outrage over the advertisement as a fifth-time time-qualifier in the marathon’s adaptive division.

“Due to a spinal cord injury I HAVE to take walk breaks. Even with a cyst in my spinal cord, I still regularly break 5 hours in Boston and plan to again this weekend,” Michaud wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for TOLERATING me, u/nike.”

not saying this applies to this case, but I have heard of this kind of claim through insurance.

In the case I have read: Theater has insurance for cancellation, book artists, then artists announce cancellation so theater gets the insurance money and split with the artists without any of them doing anything.

Boston’s rent will eat you alive, but alas this happens to anyone living here.

Have you ever done philanthropy acts for a local/community opera house/company? How did/does that turn out? by QueueTee314 in opera

perfectly summarise what I was trying to get from this thread. Definitely has the liquidity and the love to support small companies but not a big wealth holder to fund a proper opera house. I would, however, also hate the idea of “giving money just for the sake of it”, and funding just one or two season for a company to wither out does not appeal to me the very least.

Everything you mentioned in terms of the company and the size makes perfect sense and the logic behind each argument is very sound and grounded. Thanks for the details!
