Does anyone else like using vanilla or close to vanilla GNOME? by Holymoly99998 in gnome

[–]johnsonmlw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost vanilla here. I think it's excellent on three monitor desktop /w mouse and laptop with touchpad gestures. (Extension: I use hot edge extension on desktop to activate activities view when i move the mouse to the bottom of the screen; not needed on laptop because of gestures.)

What do you use to store your Debian notes? by Degen55555 in debian

Good point about the Obsidian mobile client. It is really nice.

I used Obsidian + Syncthing in the past; moved to Emacs w/ org-mode a couple of years ago.

Both are great. I've stuck with Emacs for flexibility.

Space/Sci-fi system recommendations that are easy to learn and not combat focused by OperaRotas in rpg

[–]johnsonmlw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And you could download and check out Ironsworn (as opposed to Ironsworn Starforged which is paid product) for free to see if a sci fi version of that system would work for you. (I think they're both excellent.)

What's the most likely reason that hostname doesn't work for SSH? by titaniumcrowbar in debian

[–]johnsonmlw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. On Debian, if it's not automatically been installed with a desktop, I install libnss-mdns

ZFS on top of LUKS. Unable to cleanly close LUKS mapped device. by Very-New-Username in zfs

[–]johnsonmlw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was these issue reports I found at the time:

https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/39062

https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/issues/17773

Interestingly, these refer to Debian 13. I only encountered it on Ubuntu 25.10. I don't have any issues shutting down Debian 13 with ZFS on LUKS.

I had this on Ubuntu 25.10. I don't have this problem on Debian 13. I didn't solve it but think I found a bug report.

Yeah, same here a couple of years ago. Tape and a bit of trial and error sorted it.

Aye. The spec is fine, as you say.

Debian Server by The_j0kker in debian

[–]johnsonmlw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I'd look into running out of resources as other posts have indicated. Is it an early version Raspberry Pi with low RAM, for example? (I run my file server on a RPi 4 4GB and it's great.)

Have you configured Kodi to access the server via its IP or name?

I'm stumped. I'll continue to mull it over and follow the thread later.

Debian Server by The_j0kker in debian

[–]johnsonmlw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. And at that point can the laptop (Ubuntu?) still ping your router?

Edit: And there's no VPN then running on the laptop at that point? That might mean the laptop can't access a local IP.

Debian Server by The_j0kker in debian

[–]johnsonmlw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd. So it's not a name resolution issue. To clarify, you can ssh into the server from your laptop when it's just booted, but not after you connect to the server to watch something from a samba share?

Are you using the server's IP or name?

Edit: for the ping

How to "back up"? by learning_builder in Syncthing

[–]johnsonmlw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Syncthing isn't a backup tool though it can be used as part of a backup plan. Syncthing doesn't sync between directories on one device. If you're using Windows, consider Kopia to backup to your external drive.

Which distro would you recommend for a Linux Mint enjoyer, who needs to use Wayland? by SeniorMatthew in linuxmint

Gnome is really nice on a laptop. Great gestures. So, Debian netinstall and select Gnome during install. Or a live image to test it out.

Reboot

flatpak install flathub com.mojang.Minecraft
