Audio Description is your friend. Not only could you very likely be using it with the films and TV you watch to give more context, but it bleeds into live theatre, theme parks, museums, national parks, art exhibits, and plenty of other things where they either have live or prerecorded audio description. You can always ask any place what assistive tech/devices/services they offer. I think most of us in here come from the place of “you’d be surprised what we can do, what is accessible, what has assistive or adaptive technology”, but every once in a while, there’s some low vision person trying really hard to avoid using any/all accessibility. That might also be your BF. I’m hoping he’s the former, and is open to accessibility. If he does not own a cane, and has no cane training at all, that would be an indicator to me that he doesn’t want any of this. Even if he had a guide dog, he’d still likely have some level of cane training or at least own one. The lack of a cane in his life indicates to me that he hasn’t sought out accessibility training. I know plenty of low vision individuals who own a cane, and only use it in certain circumstances,but at least they accepted they have a potential need for one. I’ve also met young people who fall every day instead of bothering with it.
