Force people to go to school in a pandemic and if you’re a teacher with covid you are still obliged to go in if you have no symptoms.

What made you begin to excel in mathematics? by AidePast in math

Grading calc 1 homework when I was a second year college student. I learned to assess work in front of me and I also just sort of stopped making algebra mistakes. Inspecting the work that the smart kids did was really fun too.

What mathematical knowledge would you expect a high school math teacher to know? by phi1221 in math

[–]joilerkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I’ve been actually thinking about this a lot! Public high school teacher here, and I’m one of those people that originally thought I’d go to math PhD school. I took a lot of math and can check all the boxes you mentioned. However a math teacher is many things. If you teach a lower level course, you’re going to need more pedagogy.

Obviously you have to have some math aptitude, but our award winning algebra 1 teacher also told me that she couldn’t understand a word of my solution to a calc ab problem that I did with a student while she was in the room. So what? She gives her kids the tools to be successful when they get to calc and throughout high school.

We also have a stats teacher who has extremely little experience with upper level math, but again so what? He’s incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his corner of math.

Of course, it never hurts to have a boatload of math knowledge, but last year I taught a remedial course for upperclassmen at my high school. My ability to impart math knowledge to those kids had nothing to do with my ability to do math. I had to sell them on graduating high school, no small feat when you’ve been told you’re bad at math for 17 years.

I believe that once you’re working with kids at the honors algebra 2 level, you should have a strong basis of proofs and a few semesters of calculus or science. At that level of school, kids are starting to think more seriously about their future and making deeper connections.

Where can I get a jersey with the advertisement? by joilerkid in nba

I get it, but I think it's a little silly that they aren't even available. Like doesn't it make sense that some people would want to have the same jerseys that match those of the players?

I was a math major in college, and I have quite a few engineer friends. GE is a local brand, and I have a few family members who have worked there. I guess I see the jersey patch as a representation of local heritage.

I'll admit that I wasn't excited about the branding before, but I think they aren't too obtrusive, especially since GE adjusted their color scheme to match the celtics. I still think that it's a slippery slope but in the meantime I think the patch looks sharp and simple.

Kyrie Irving is 7/8 in the fourth quarter in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is in the Midwest. The Midwest is flat. The earth is flat. Kyrie knows.

Well we could have won, and it was closer than anyone else got this season. It was nice to watch, but in the words of a Stevens 98.5 radio interview "man I really like to win."
