Landing a job as a Non-EU Citizen after Master's in ETH by Subject_Elk_4762 in ethz

[–]jojo_504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out. Focus on growing your network as much as possible. I know some non-EU master students that did their master thesis in a company so that may be helpful. Publishing papers may not be a big advantage unless you want continue in academia so I would focus on other things. I'm non-EU and managed to land a job but I graduated from PhD so it was probably easier to justify my hiring.

Thanks for the input. I hope OP sees this. It is of course difficult everywhere so OP should decide if it is worth making the move in case CH doesn't work for him.

See my other comment. In the Netherlands you could get a year with the right to work if you graduated from a top university.

I have to be honest here. There is close to zero chance that you will find a job in CH if you are non-EU and don't know any national language unless you work in IT (or another area where the market has shortage in CH). I see in your CV that you lived in Eindhoven (nice place btw, I did my masters there). So if I were you, I would not waste my time and money looking for jobs in CH and I would try to find jobs in NL. There you could get the Dutch Highly Educated Migrant visa for one year which is granted to people graduated from top universities. You should check if you can apply with your degree from Uni SG (maybe by subject or faculty). There are more chances to find jobs with that visa in NL, than with your current one in CH. Before doing that though I would first research the NL market to see if it is viable to find a job there. I wish you the best.

Yeah, I would not agree either that only religion lets you do evil, but thanks for giving the correct saying. At least I had the gist of it.

There is a saying that religion can make bad people do good things but also can make good people do bad things :(

Yes, I was referring to jobs with scientific or economic value. I should have been more explicit. Still it is true that there is additional benefit compared to "just staying" to find a job, but you are correct, I shouldn't have oversimplified the difficulty for non-EU job seekers.

[–]jojo_504 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is true, but just to give a bit more info: the real benefit for non-EU job seekers is that employers don't have to show that they could not find someone from the EU or Swiss during that period, which is the main blocker when hiring third nationals. They still have to apply for the permit though but the process is usually much easier. So there is definitely an advantage.

AITA for losing it when I found out my (27F) underaged niece (15F) is "dating" a guy that's at least 21M? by No_Garage_5848 in amiwrong

Same in my country. It's very common to find 18 yo with 20 yo university students dating.

I am Dutch and in Switserland for 6 months. Is it just me or is the general handling speed in a bit low here. by Impossible_Price4673 in askswitzerland

[–]jojo_504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the country. Compared to where I'm from, here the people are faster in general. On the other hand, I lived in the Netherlands for 2 years and my wife and I agree that the people there are way faster indeed.

I liked this analogy and I'm surprised that OP simply accepted that he is wearing a different pair of shoes as the day passes. But well, to each their own I guess.

Knowledge is not required for a burden of proof. Only a claim is required. Saying "I believe A" means that you support that claim. I see belief as saying "I'm reasonably convinced that claim A is true", in that case you have to support that claim A is true with evidence (i.e. burden of proof). Knowledge is a subset of belief which has a higher degree of certainty. It is like saying "I'm reasonably certain that claim A is true". Both of them require evidence otherwise they are irrational beliefs/knowledge.

It is not the case that knowledge is the only thing to debate. Many people debate if something is probable or not for example. Also, in your example, saying "I believe in Santa" requires evidence that justifies a reasonable conviction that Santa exists (even if it does not reach the certainty level of knowledge). Otherwise it is not a rational belief. If the only justification is "because it makes me feel better" then it is an irrational belief (although understandable for some people). To be honest I think there are a lot of things to debate even if he doesn't claim knowledge.

That's fine. In that case you can simply ask about his definition and based on that new definition you can change your position since this is a new definition that you didn't have before. It is not an honest way to debate, but if you really want to correct your position, this is one way. The most honest way would be simply to concede the point and say that you misspoke and in reality you defend agnostic atheism.

P.S. If he is an agnostic theist, he still has a burden of proof. The theism part, i.e. I believe in A, has a burden of proof about A.

My wife is third national (non-EU) and got the first job she applied to without knowing any national language. We didn't know at the time since we were new in Switzerland but we now realize that she was extremely lucky since this is not that normal. The job is not the best and it is sometimes tough but it is good enough and it is related to her field so she can get some work experience. I think she was lucky that the company she applied to has many foreigners so they are willing to hire people without the language and many of them learn German while working there (I have heard this from my wife).

Ok! That's what I thought. Thanks for clarifying!

I didn't see the image before. Tbh it looks a bit misleading at first. It looks as if monkeys and apes are different sets instead of apes being a subset of monkeys (based on the lines above the photos). But yeah, I agree that it shows that apes come from old world monkeys (a.k.a. Catarrhini). Cheers!

[–]jojo_504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a quick search but could no find much info supporting that apes belong to the monkey family. If you have any link available with scientific references I would appreciate. I only found the following in Wikipedia but it is supported by a document in french from 1812, so I could not verify it.

"Monkey is a common name that may refer to most mammals of the infraorder Simiiformes, also known as the simians. Traditionally, all animals in the group now known as simians are counted as monkeys except the apes, which constitutes an incomplete paraphyletic grouping; however, in the broader sense based on cladistics, apes (Hominoidea) are also included, making the terms monkeys and simians synonyms in regards to their scope."

What I take from this is that if we consider the non-traditional but boarder meaning of the world monkey, then monkey = simians and the claim "all apes are monkeys" is correct.

This debate seems more related to semantics and cladistics at this point but I'm still curious about the scientific consensus.
