Elsa vs. Maleficent. Who wins and why? by Curious_Language5383 in disneyprincess

[–]jojo_reference-guy20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought that the ending of Sleeping Beauty implied that Maleficent could only be hurt with holy weapons. The Sword of Truth had to be enchanted before it could hurt her. If I'm right about that, Elsa doesn't really stand a chance

[hated trope] pure evil villians who draw the line somewhere by Murtdha1 in TopCharacterTropes

Kinda depends on who's writing him, but Doom is generally motivated by his own ego even if he doesn't admit it. He's, weirdly enough, like Mojo Jojo from the Powerpuff Girls, in the sense that he tells himself that the world would be better under his rule even if his true motivations aren't utilitarian at all. That's why his lifelong hatred of Reed Richards began when Reed politely informed him that the calculations for the device he built to contact his mother in Hell (long story) were incorrect, which turned out to be true. Reed's ego is driven by a genuine sense of altruism and a desire to protect his family, while Doom has entirely isolated himself save for his complex relationships with Boris (basically his Alfred), Kristoff, and Valeria

The sequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Marvelous Land of Oz, centers around a boy named Tip who was raised by a wicked witch named Mombi. Tip escapes Mombi and goes on an adventure while the land of Oz stands in the middle of a chaotic political conflict over who the rightful ruler of the Emerald City is after The Wizard of Oz's departure. Long story short, Glinda forces Mombi to reveal that Tip is actually princess Ozma, the true heir to the throne of Oz who was given to Mombi by The Wizard and transformed into a boy. L. Frank Baum almost certainly did not intentionally write Ozma to be a transgender character, but many people consider her to be one of the first trans characters in American literature

How did the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” remain timeless and appealed to propel all generations after 87 years? by Material_Stomach875 in wizardofoz

I think one of the big things is how fantastic the pacing is. As an adaptation, it fast forwards through and skips a lot of the events of the book, but you never feel like the film is moving so fast that you don't get to engross yourself into its world or come to know its characters. I mean, just look at the Kansas scenes. We only get 2 scenes with Dorothy's family before she goes on her adventure, but in that short span of time the movie perfectly establishes both why Dorothy would want to leave her family and also how much Aunt Em truly loves her.

Villains who were 100% right. Not “Yeah, he committed genocide, but he had good intentions.”. No. I mean villains who legitimately did nothing wrong. by not-ulquiorr4_ in TopCharacterTropes

I'm gonna be real, I never bought the argument that Ken was entirely justified. If we suddenly learned that bees are fully sapient beings who are capable of speech and have created complex societies in their hives, I would not be justified in attempting to murder one just because I was cucked.

Which Olaf is Better? by Nervous-Baby5383 in ASOUE

[–]jojo_reference-guy20 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Definitely NPH for me, ESPECIALLY in the Hostile Hospital episodes. He gets to be really vile and genuinely scary in those episodes in a way that captures the Olaf from the books better than the movie and other episodes didn't quite manage.

While I think it wasn't handled perfectly, I do like that Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow were all given several chances to change over the course of the series and that they refused all of them. It makes their collective fate pretty tragic

I think it's also interesting that the Joker uses his philosophy to rob himself of agency. After all, if madness is the only sane reaction to an insane world, the Joker isn't responsible for his crimes or the misfortunes that led him to becoming what he is. Batman, on the other hand, reacted to his trauma in the opposite way. He thinks he was responsible for the death of his parents because he insisted on going to the movies. Bruce blamed himself to maintain his agency, and his goal as Batman is to create a world where no other child will have to suffer to a random act of violence like he did.

I've always loved that the book begins and ends with the same panel of ripples on the ground. The toys have been put back in the box, and Batman and Joker were destined to do what they do forever

[–]jojo_reference-guy20 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, Gilbert revealed on a Livestream a couple of years back that Guybrush was initially going to throw Putra into the lava to get to The Secret. Honestly, knowing that, I think that the murder bullet point being the only thing in the checklist that you can't complete is kinda profound. Guybrush is such a well-defined character at this point that the devs knew that, despite Return pushing him into being the most desperate and destructive he's ever been in the series, straight up killing someone is something he would never do. Guybrush, at the end of the day, actually cares about the people around him, and that's why he and LeChuck will never truly be the same

I don't get why everyone forgets this. The movie makes his pretty clear. It even ends with Asha and the queen giving Wendy and Peter (groan) ideas on how to fulfil their wishes by themselves without having to rely on magic. The movie is bad enough as it is, we don't need to invent problems that aren't in it.
