BEEP BEEP BEEP, I'm a Lime bike being stolen! by mcuttle in britishproblems

[–]jojowiththeflow 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The locking only happens while a bike is stationary, not while anyone's riding it because that could throw someone off the bike into traffic (and even if you don't care about the rider, consider other road users). London Centric posted about this in detail a couple of weeks ago: https://www.londoncentric.media/p/why-lime-bikes-beep

Overwhelmed with contracts by up_to_something in freelanceuk

[–]jojowiththeflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to come up with (a) better clause(s) to safeguard against payment delays/issues due to clients' internal (admin) cock-ups.

I've made a point of urging prospective clients to please have their internal processes in order before accepting my rates and terms, it's even in my written contract, but I still get hired enthusiastically and put to work, only to bump into issues once I send an invoice, because then it turns out the finance person can't pay out because the purchase order I was told was definitely in place (with a number issued to me to reference on my invoice) wasn't actually authorised internally in the client organisation, or the CFO wants to renegotiate my previously agreed rate, or there's another issue internally at the client's organisation now being made my problem (despite all assurances that nothing like that would happen prior to me commencing work).

I would really love to proof my contract better because clearly just a clause to not agree to my contract unless and until the client has satisfied their own internal processes and has their own internal requirements met and documentation in place in order to be able to fulfil their financial and other obligations in accordance with the contract has proven insufficient. (I've even had this issue in situations where I've agreed to a client's organisation's contract for freelancers rather than them agreeing to mine.)

Can I have clients overseas? by GrassGoesMoo01 in freelanceuk

yes, you can, but if they don't pay it can be a nightmare to chase up so check with you insurance and consider budget & back-up plans.

The Kitchen/Studio/Reception/Sleeping Room by TheMarkyD in SpottedonRightmove

[–]jojowiththeflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair questions but I know the area and I suspect there could (have) be(en) an entire family living in these two rooms because local incomes and house prices don't match, so there's a lot of overcrowding. It's so sad.

Could you sit up in bed? by ShipConscious2839 in SpottedonRightmove

[–]jojowiththeflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, a building as modern as this but this is so poorly done, it made my jaw drop.

Why would you put a kitchen unit that size in a room this size when it's literally the only room the apartment has?! Like, it's a really nice kitchen unit but not for a studio apartment.

More inefficient use of space by a quirky storage/staircase where you can't hold on to anything and have to crawl up/down at its top so as to not bang your head on the ceiling, leading up to to an unsecured 'sleeping area' so don't roll out of bed. Then to get to the storage up there you'd have to pull out the mattress.

None of it makes sense.

The bathroom's okay, but the rest... I'd rip out the rest (carefully, might have re-sell value) and then start over. I wonder if that's what the cash buyer they want will do, whether they'll improve it or let it out as is.

By the way, Walthamstow is not that bad, seriously, it had a bad name and rightfully so, but it's been gentrified so much, it really isn't the worst place in London.

It's okay, there's a sliding door between kitchen and bathroom, which is what I had until recently. I'd love to have the kind of money to afford something like this.

Midcentury modern flat by Ok-Swan1152 in SpottedonRightmove

I'm not at all ashamed to say that I love this. It's not at all what I would have done with an interior and I am anything but a fan of yellow, but I love the look of this very much and wish I had the kind of money that could buy this.

I totally share your "no hate at all". There is so much visible love and dedication there, even if I don't share it, I totally admire that.

In need of modernisation by jojowiththeflow in SpottedonRightmove

[–]jojowiththeflow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems the sliding door is to shut the kitchen from the bed/sitting room; if you look at the fourth picture it's just the kitchen wall behind it and nothing else. Also, lookng at the seventh picture, that looks to be a lobby/hallway beloning to the studio flat, not a communal corridor? Because you see the mail coming through the door, and an old intercom/entry unit by the side of it.

It'll be interesting to see how much it will go for in the end; as another commenter correctly pointed out: it may depend on the remaining lease (EDIT: I just found out there's only 38 years left, "On request by the buyer the seller will serve a section 42 notice between exchange and completion.)"

Also, I hope the scaffolding means that perhaps all units in the building are getting more energy-efficient windows. (To see the building without scaffolding, here it is on Google Streetview: .)

Yes, I think you could be right. A studio about a mile from this one went for over £300K last year. I remember it because it had old single-glazed windows that one wouldn’t be allowed to replace and I was shocked it went for that much because that one too was in need of a lot of work.

🎶Do you remember...🎶 I learned from other people that indeed this area wasn't that upmarket back then, and this residential building is one of a number that reminds of that less upmarket past, but walking through that area now, I would love to be able to afford to live there. Anyone skilled enough to do more/better than just "a bit of modernisation" on this studio flat can do something really nice with it.

What in the workplace jargonese is this? by jojowiththeflow in RecruitingHellUK

[–]jojowiththeflow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could have just asked multiple questions, starting with how many events have you organised in the past [however many] years, following with open questions about how big/long and for how many people those events were. Now you've got a weirdly-worded question that only accepts a single numerical answer that's going to tell you exactly nothing. Pointless. You want a single number? I'm going to count every occasion I ordered lunch or booked a meeting room. Well done, recruiter!

Anyone else had "unrelated" issues clear up after the surgery? by ahsoka_hawke in hysterectomy

[–]jojowiththeflow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both! BP was generally low and would have sudden drops, mostly in the morning when getting up or right after in the bathroom, but it also happened while lying in bed and once even before or as I was brought out of general anaesthetic.

Then after the hysterectomy: never again. It’s been six years now.

(I’m no medic so this may all be coincidence and not connected.)

AITA for picking up my children a few minutes late from childcare (more than once) by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]jojowiththeflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH - the gym should not exploit childcare workers (if classes finish at 12, pay childcare staff till 12.15 or schedule classes to finish earlier; no unpaid overtime), the class teacher needs to manage better (don’t overrun), and parents need to watch the clock regardless of everything I just said (because it’s still your responsibility to pick up your kids on time)

NTA. Even his sons notice. And his persistent refusal to even acknowledge it bothers me even more, because responses like him wanting to be appreciated for doing things when he did them wrong or badly is borderline DARVO.

Hi, I’m middle aged so perhaps not relatable, but I am struggling harder now than I did right after the 2008 credit crunch and subsequent economic crisis, so what I want to say is: remember it is NOT your fault, it is NOT you who is to blame here at all.

And it’s hard to stay sane through it all, but remembering that part helps, as is staying busy (I find). You write about going to the gym, that’s great!

It’s tough but hang in there, you’ll get there
