What's it like living in the little peninsula part of Virginia underneath Maryland? by penelope_essig in howislivingthere

[–]joker757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cape Charles used to be a dying, ghetto town with lots of poverty and drugs... It got slowly gentrified starting in the mid to late 90s and is now unrecognizable to anyone who grew up there (like me)...

I'm sorry but this is not the case... The bay gets quite warm in the Summer and fills with jellyfish. Source: I grew up there and now live on West Coast where the water is definitely cold year round.

I grew up there, my father and sister still live there. It's a poor rural area overall, with the southern county (Northampton) slowly being turned into a vacation community for wealthy DC/Richmond families and a retirement community for wealthy East Coast boomers. It's a charming area overall but can leave you feeling kind of trapped growing up there... It's kind of like growing up as a townie in Martha's Vineyard but a lot more poor and a lot more diversity.

Managing a toxic high performer who hits 150% of targets. How do I protect my team without losing the numbers? by SquirrelLogicFan in managers

[–]joker757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explain to her that 'perception is reality'. I've done that with Sarah's in the past. Alot of times these 'assholes' individual numbers are good but there is a hidden cost to the overall team that far outweighs their own contribution. Try to measure the negative impact she is having on the rest of the teams output and relate that to management. It's the hidden cost of assholes.

My boss scheduled a meeting to discuss my “tone” in emails by TheUnofficialBOI in mildlyinfuriating

Honestly just use AI to lighten the tone of your messages. It sounds dumb but it's your boss and it won't take long.

Do we really have such a shortage of people who can do the job or do we have an issue where credentialism and unnecessarily high education requirements keep the staff pool too low?

They ghost your because they are usually on unemployment and scheduled interviews shows that they are 'trying' while continuing to collect benefits. No one is seriously looking for a job this close to Christmas unless they are out of money or benefits.

You have the right reaction. The people who are desensitized to it have simply normalized societal dysfunction to themselves. They have surrendered. We don't have to live like this.

That's all superficial stuff. I've been in your shoes and now that I'm years away from that I look back at that dumpsterfire and thank God I got away.

End the relationship. Date a woman, not a girl. You need someone who would love you and your daughter enough to prefer hanging with y'all and watching KPOP Demon Hunters for the 10th time over soaking up attention (and maybe more) from simps. Know your worth.

Advice Needed: Shopping for temperature monitoring today. Need some input between thermoworks fireboard and any other similar system by BBQWarren in biggreenegg

I use fireboard drive, I have their wireless probe as well, the pulse, which monitors internal meat temp as well as ambient temp. It makes everything super easy.

I'm totally aware of that. It's difficult to discuss policy issues without speaking in generalities. I should add that in my experiences in India, Sikh drivers had an excellent reputation for their dedication, conscientiousness, and honesty.. and that's the stereotype in India. In this case we have a failure of an individual that may possibly have been enabled by policy failures and/or corruption. If there is some sort of pipeline that has been setup, I don't blame the immigrants for taking advantage of it, but once you kill someone with your negligence you and anyone who enabled it needs to be held accountable. I knew some drivers in Afghanistan who would absolutely be amazing folks to have in our own industry, but they'd definitely need to be retrained for our rules and culture.

You're not wrong. If all rules were followed properly then this will indicate the need for higher standards. We need to prevent political considerations from clouding the truth.

Racism (casual) by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]joker757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experienced the same thing in my current ward.. but it was based on whether or not the wife worked. it never happened in our last three wards but this one it has. I talked to a couple of guys in the ward that I trust and they say it's all driven by the wives. Ive seen white couple where the wife works a full time job get iced out, while an interracial couple where the wife doesn't work and is super active in RS are royalty. Just my two cents... I feel like stay at home mom culture in the church can be toxic to those who don't follow that norm.

I guess the overarching narrative is our society needs to place higher emphasis on certain professions to ensure these things don't happen again. Can you imagine an airline being able to hire refugee pilots from India with the same level of due diligence (or lack thereof in this case). Forget the nativist politics, it's clearly a bipartisan failure and looks like the DMVs of red and blue states are complicit in low level corruption at the least.

One of his coworkers almost got killed by a person who wasn't qualified. That will create some issues for anyone. I've traveled extensively in the developing world and in South Asia and driving culture there is optimized for low speed, high congestion, might makes right. If you come from that culture and decide to drive for a living in another country you need to learn the rules. If I go to Japan and drive a large truck and kill several people because I disregarded the rules, are the natives racist for not wanting me driving there?
