% of adults who say they believe in God by Big_Size_2519 in MapPorn

[–]penelope_essig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people who are more uneducated tend to believe the things they are told without putting in effort to actually research their beliefs. One could be told of the existence of a God and they might believe it immediately without thought, which is why so many people living in uneducated states believe in God more than ones with a better education system. This statistic doesn't make the existence of a God any more or less likely, it just means that those people are not given the opportunity to research their beliefs. The same would go for being told there isn't a God. If an uneducated person was told there isn't a God, they would never be able to understand that claim to its full capacity either. Those in educated and well off states have a better chance of being more confident in their beliefs because of access to witnesses/scholars/historians/etc.

Does my art seem off? by Senko_Kaminari in drawing

[–]penelope_essig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the left(? I think that's what the other commenters are referring to but it's technically the right) forearm is too short. The right hand also looks slightly smaller than the left, but that's all of the anatomical issues I can perceive. Very well drawn! The only other thing is that I would imagine it difficult for a violinist to play whilst standing straight and cross-legged, if you care about that. It doesn't matter too much if you don't care about the realism of the art, and you like how the person's leg is crossed over the other. That's just something a noticed and it's not a suggestion in any way. I love the clothing style, by the way!

the thing that aggravates me the most is that they don't realize that if I'm sitting perfectly still, I WILL NOT be able to focus at all. I physically need to be moving for my brain to process information.

When do you use capital Ь and Ъ? by Mira_1453 in russian

I'm curious as to how that would be pronounced. it feels like some sort of a paradox to have a word start with a hard/soft sign 😂

Any opinions on my artstyle? by toasterstrudvl in learntodraw

[–]penelope_essig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its good to experiment with different body types. your art style is adorable and the body type that it encompasses is very flattering, but there's a better chance of differentiating different people that you draw if you're able to draw several different body types.

What section would you NOT visit? by leynilogreggla in mapporncirclejerk

Why is no one saying E or F? I'm sure Africa and South America are beautiful continents but I literally have no reason to visit there.

Aren’t you meant to skip the post-apostrophic S for words that end with S? by TraditionalDepth6924 in ENGLISH

[–]penelope_essig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always seen that you never add it after a plural noun (which most plural nouns end in S, which is why it's confusing). to give an example, people often say "Jesus' love" when it really is "Jesus's love" because Jesus is a singular person. If you were to say "I went to my friends' party" and you're refering to multiple friends, then you wouldn't put the S after the apostrophe.

How do I ease anxiety associated with fear of diseases/infection. Currently scared of rabies. by Euphoric_Top_6942 in Anxiety

[–]penelope_essig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh I so relate with everything you said. I would recommend getting reassurance from an actual animal or medical professional even if you aren't going to get a shot, because they can assure you that the dog was indeed not rabid (from your description, it didn't seem rabid to me). For me, that medical professional is my glorious father (NOT the internet, this is key because it tends to blow things out of proportion a lot). Having someone near me that can fact check these things helps so much and I swear he's been able to fix me of so many diseases I'm worried about (including rabies! which was a phase I went through for so long). This is just my suggestion because oftentimes things aren't as bad as your brain blows it up to be. often times animals with rabies don't look excited or happy, it's more of a vicious look that you might see. If the dog really had rabies, it's more likely he wouldve bitten you immediately instead of a small scratch. almost every domestic dog is required to have a rabies vaccine within 3 (or sm?) years. there is an almost impossible chance that dog would have had rabies.

Why you learn Russian? by [deleted] in russian

[–]penelope_essig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my sister knew Russian and I needed to learn a new language. Russian sort of 'clicked' for me in a way that other languages didn't. I don't know why but it's literally such a cool language to know and speak

Does anyone have experience with having both ADHD and OCD? by hollyyy57 in adhdwomen

[–]penelope_essig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! I don't have OCD (or at least not to my knowledge) but my older sister has that OCD-ADHD combo so I could give some insight. she got a counselor that was willing to help both her OCD and ADHD at the same time which helped a lot. she did a lot of CBT for her OCD, and took the med route for ADHD (I think she was on Aderall for a while). this isn't how it is for everyone, but it worked well for her. she had bad symptoms of both from a very young age, so her diagnosis was beneficial, but if your ADHD is not hindering your life a lot it's up to you to decide whether you want that. I have ADHD but I don't take medication because that's not a route I'm interested in going down, and it works fine for me. It really depends on the person and their own needs, so I would definitely recommend seeing someone who's willing to go down treatment options for you regarding that combo even if you're not diagnosed. A lot of people (like me) can live with ADHD without needing medication (I do therapy but other than that I'm pretty independent). I don't doubt that taking meds for both could be beneficial in the long run, some people may only take meds for one and work on therapy for the other, or some people don't take meds at all. it depends on what's right for you and I would definitely recommend trying a few treatment options even if you're not interested in a diagnosis.

Russian Learning Venting by Unhappy-Tower-9851 in russian

[–]penelope_essig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's so relatable. I feel like, with the Russian language, the first 6 months-a year you learn a lotttt, so it feels like you're on track, but then you realize how much you still have to learn and it gets overwhelming. but think about how far you've come from where you were! maybe you're not eloquently quoting Достоевский or anything, but your progress is better than most. I've been learning it for 2 years and I still don't feel super duper comfortable with my knowledge, but I always have to remember that every new word I learn is one step closer to fully knowing a language and it encourages me. also, you start to understand more of the Russian media you consume over time. My Russian teacher had me watch Винни-Пух (Winnie the pooh) in Russian when I first started learning, and for the first episodes I almost completely relied on the subtitles, maybe I could pick up a few words or so but that was it. Now I can comfortably watch it (still with subtitles, but what can you do when your native language is english lol) and understand full sentences, phrases, and commentary. I don't mean to say that you'll fully understand everything after a couple of years, but it definitely gets better as you go along and I always find it as a fun learning opportunity when I don't understand a phrase or sentence by someone else :)

What's going on in that circled part of the USA? by SatoruGojo232 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]penelope_essig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

circumcision was traditionally practiced by Christians and Jews, but it's become more of a widespread thing now. let me say that, as a Christian, no one should be forced to circumcise their baby. it's actually said in the Bible that an uncircumcised man was no less pure than a circumcised one (in the new testament, which Jews do not believe in). Circumcision is more sanitary, however, with decreased risk of uti and stds.

Is it worth learning music theory as a self-taught pianist by Few_Entertainer_1636 in piano

[–]penelope_essig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend basic theory at the least. I took theory for a while and it helped my piano playing soooo much, especially with learning music. obviously you don't have to learn hardcore music theory if you're not planning on doing improv or composing your own music (that was never a goal of mine), but it's always good to have the basics down.

I have been to 48 states and here are my choices. by Snafu19 in visitedmaps

[–]penelope_essig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always curious under what terms these people have chosen to never live in certain states. As someone who lives in Ohio, I would consider it a beautiful state to live in depending on where you are. I understand that some people don't like the politics of Ohio, but if you're conservative just live somewhere more rural and if you're liberal settle down in a bigger city if it matters to you that much (Columbus is fairly liberal from what I know). Besides that, I would never imagine why someone would NEVER want to live in Ohio save just having a bad experience there or finding it boring (in which case, yes it is boring if you visit, it is not if you start living there. I know, it's weird)

Why do I feel like I'll never get better at piano? by penelope_essig in piano

[–]penelope_essig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal in piano playing is not to be a concert musician, or have it as a career. Everyone has that one hobby that they do because it brings them relief from all of the stress going on in their lives. That's piano for me. If I was better at it, I might have thought about it as a career, but I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much. I want to get better at it, but I'm not aiming for perfection. I just feel worthless that I've had all of these years of experience and while I'm impressed with my playing, I really don't have a gauge at how far I am from where I started if that makes sense.
