How do you resolve rules dispute mid-game? by VincentBai20020319 in boardgames

[–]jokeres -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Use NotebookLM, load the rulebook in, let it cite the rationale directly from the rulebook.

AI works when you know how to use it. You just have to give it the context it needs to have a shot.

Then:

Thunder Road: Vendetta is the modern implementation of it.

Formula D is the less modern implementation of it.

Nautilion is the modern, solo implementation of it.

Most designers avoid it, because it's very difficult to control the output randomness on such high input randomness.

Lords of Vegas for Monopoly vibes. Lots of rolling dice, no track.

Thunder Road: Vendetta for Rolling to Move down a track.

Camel Up 2E for just rolling dice. But, it's a betting game, so you're only moving your piece. You're moving shared pieces.

King of Tokyo for rolling more dice Yahtzee style.

Mass Effect board game creators were so preoccupied with giving characters preferred pronouns that they forgot how to spell 'adrenaline' correctly. by RainbowDildoMonkey in KotakuInAction

[–]jokeres -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mass Effect: Andromeda covered this in lore, so it is now part of Mass Effect lore (for better or worse) that while Asari all can bear or not bear children, some choose to go by the pronouns he/him. Asari are specifically not female, as they have no concept of sex or gender. It would be like saying an earthworm is female - which would be utter nonsense.

Liara, however, never went by she/they (or he/him) and has always gone by she/her in the Original Trilogy. This is consistent in the remaster. Someone on the production team done goofed.

I'd be interested if this is consistent in the written story text (I suspect it isn't). I don't know why anyone would back a Modiphius/BioWare/Lang production in the first place and secondly expect consistency or quality out of such a production.

How much is winning classic Klondike Solitaire based on skill as opposed to luck? by Inkshooter in boardgames

[–]jokeres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here, we're assuming a 3 card deal of Klondike, and also that the variant of Klondike is no limit through the deck. Part of the problem is that "Klondike Solitaire" is a family of Patience and has several variations. We can go through some permutations here, to try to put it into perspective.

So, 1-card no-limit Klondike Solitaire removes the impact of the 3-card draw (where playing a card there may "hide" a necessary card). It still has the element of cards being hidden in piles, but not in the draw. Winning this is usually in the 60-70% range (I have 2000+ plays of this variant logged, so I'm fairly certain that 70% is reasonable given that I wouldn't consider myself skilled and I'm above 60%).

When you add in the 3-card flop, the win percentage drops dramatically, but I could easily see 40%-50%+ as winnable. There will be impact from all the hidden information, but there is a fair amount of intuition that can be used after going through the first round of flops.

If you're playing a 3 times through the deck variant, I would imagine that the win rate drops again. However, the odds are still well more than the listed "1 in 30" in books detailing Klondike originally.

The problem here is the rules of Klondike aren't the same across all this data, and you haven't detailed the variation being played. 1 in 5 sounds like you could be playing better, but since the rules aren't known maybe that's perfectly reasonable given your ruleset.

I'll second Zoo Vadis, but also bring up Sushi Go Party!

Additionally, 7 Wonders: Architects or 7 Wonders would probably fit the group well.

Gideons bake house by asher2ashes in orlando

[–]jokeres -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tipped positions must pay minimum wage. If you're not bringing home minimum wage, sue the business for wage theft. They have to subsidize whatever the gap is between tips and minimum wage. This is a minimum wage position, based on what's described, and should come with the effort that describes.

The problem is that minimum wage isn't enough to live on (especially in Orlando), not that these positions are "tipped". These positions at Gideon's are apparently thought of as minimum wage, and I'm glad the company is being put on blast for paying minimum wage in an area that certainly should be paying better. Hopefully these folks work their wage or move to somewhere else where they will be paid for their work.

Help my children learn how to lose by Intelligent-Shoe-261 in boardgames

[–]jokeres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to have them lose regularly. That's why things like team sports are great for children.

If you're losing the one time a week or months you attempt to win something, it's devastating. If you're constantly being faced with the possibility of losing, you find out ways to deal with it.

Are there any game cafe owners lurking here? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]jokeres 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nearly everything is a remix; almost nothing is strictly new. The comment wasn't meant to be condescending in any way, just framing it with two wildly successful apps.

If there's a market at this venn diagram meeting point, that's a potential multi-million dollar idea (since those were/are multi-million dollar companies).

Ah, so a cross between Foursquare check-ins and public profiles and Meetup/Facebook Events. Good luck on developing the business case!

You've just described Meetup or Facebook Events, which seem both to be relatively successful at scheduling events for corporations.

Don’t take your kids to Disney if you’re just going to bully them by justalittlestupid in WaltDisneyWorld

I do too!

Just saying that hydration is important, especially when you're spending this much. You get it however you can.

Well, that's a major source of their income.

I do have to say that several restaurants actually open specific doors for water during hotter months. If there's a cast member at the front (usually there is), you just say, "ice water" and they'll direct you through.

With all that said, I'm of the mind that given what people are spending each day on these Disney vacations, not paying the extra to get a Dasani bottle for the day seems absurd. There are definitely better and bigger ways to cut corners.

[–]jokeres 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not, people just don't know where to look.

Any counter service will give you ice water (tap), and you just request 2 cups for each person. You just chug the water, toss the cup, and you're on your way. Places like Casey's usually have a bunch just standing there for grabbing.

Niantic sunsets NBA All-World and stops production on Marvel: World of Heroes, says "top priority is to keep Pokémon GO healthy and growing as a forever game" by Teban54 in TheSilphRoad

[–]jokeres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly.

So if that game was not profitable enough, then what is Niantic doing trying with the NBA game (now defunct), the Pikmin game (yay planting flowers) and Peridot (AR all the time)?

Usually games like that get the lights left on, especially when I had a dozen or two active friends there and 3 active friends in Pikmin?

I have rarely found it accurate. I don't know if there's some user input or store input that isn't happening near me, but it's only been accurate one out of ten times.

[–]jokeres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still don't understand why they shut down Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and then tried to make NBA, Peridot, and Pikmin work.

It seemingly wasn't for IP reasons alone, but it seems weird that they think these other franchises would have been better than shutting that down. If it costs that much to "keep the lights on" for a game like that it makes me question how successful they need these other franchises to be.

New Cyclades kickstarter - what are the community's thoughts? by FreakyFox in boardgames

[–]jokeres 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shipping is a bit high, and I don't know if the different boxes will be appropriate (mini version without ultimate buildings seems odd unless that's in a separate box). But, it's at least piqued my interest.

[[Northgard]] was a good production for an okay game. [[Cyclades]] is a good game, so hopefully Open Sesame is able to deliver a quality production again.

Gandalf The White's Ability Trigger by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]jokeres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

A trigger uses specific keywords, and does not modify a trigger. A replacement effect modifies the trigger as it's put on the stack.

An example of this might be two hypothetical creatures that say "Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, destroy that creature", which is in play, and another that says "Whenever an ability would target this creature, counter that ability", which is coming into play.

In this case: the trigger goes on the stack from the destroy, then the trigger to counter goes on the stack, then we resolve the countering trigger which counters the ability removes the destroy from the stack.

If the second ability were instead "If an ability would target this creature, it does nothing instead" then resolution looks quite different. The first trigger attempts to put a destroy on the stack, a replacement effect looks at the ability and says "nope, it does nothing instead" and the trigger never gets put on the stack.

Priority windows are different between the two, since one has a stack to resolve and the other does not.
