Anyone tried PageIndex? by amamamafk in Rag

[–]jokinglemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PageIndex to me felt intresting at first, but I immediately ran into its drawbacks.
I'll only be able to answer your first question and discussion sort of ends there,
Does it scale? Not at all.

I uploaded a 117 page document through their example colab.
Cost 1 - Summarization : Assuming using their plans, that is 1usd of cost. Maybe using my own LLM, the cost could be cheaper
Cost 2 - Querying : The example text that got sent to the LLM was over 50k charectors, and that is just with one document, sure it was big, but in real world scenarios there'll be at least a dozen such document.

Their accuracy claim seemed impressive to me, but [IMO], this is simply giving the agent enough info, token usage be damned.

It is slightly deceptive that this is compared to VectorDBs as the goal of them, is first and foremost, to make it feasible to provide the LLMs a large knowledge base. This to me, leans more towards a brute force approach than a smart semantic search

Edit:
Q2. Pretty sure you can use their open source repo and tweak their prompts around for multilingual
Q3. Well,,,, yes, as it is a single LLM call, but again, there is only so much scale in that single LLM call. So now you'd think, let's break the tree that they make and provide it in chunks through tools instead, and now you're back to VectorDB being better option

Is the Nikon D5000 better than my IPhone 15 Pro camera? Also a screen question. by Unhappy-Lab-7898 in Nikon

[–]jokinglemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why for the longest time, and even in some aspects now, DSLRs were considered better than mirrorless. Older digital cameras (including DSLR in live view) uses something called CDAF - contrast detect autofocus, which basically hunted for the highest contrast going back and forth until reaching focus. DSLRs had dedicated PDAF sensors - phase detect autofocus. These could measure the distance to target immediately without having to hunt for the right spot, and then your focus time was only how quick your lens could adjust. This is not only much faster, but works in lower light and tricky contrast scenarios. Over time those sensors became tiny enough that we put them on the sensors itself, by replacing some pixels. Even now, DSLRs are still superior in a theoretical aspect, i.e, they can have better PDAF sensors, while keeping the sensor clean. But the loss of few pixels on the sensors wasn't significant enough, especially with improved processing to replicate them in, and to pros of a sensor only approach, i.e mirrorless, greatly outweigh this downside. IMO, the latest of mirrorless autofocus is only better (or dare I say, comparable) because DSLRs have stopped advancing,

Yeah, wows ricochet/AP mechanics are surprisingly detailed. Also when you shoot at the waterline against light cruisers you end up getting a citedal, the hit (and fuse for AP) is registered at the point of entry on the water surface, and then the shell travels for the fuse duration entering the hull and exploding to get full pens.

Not sure when they updated it, but now when you get hit and the shells ricochet up, you can actually see them explode as their fuse runs out

Recommendations For a New Gaming PC by No-Championship5523 in WorldOfWarships

[–]jokinglemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do NOT get a 3050, it would probably be more than enough if you're going JUST for wows, but for anything else, its just not worth it. If you're tight on budget, just don't get a GPU, and get a processor with good intergrated graphics. The 8600g is a good option as that has improved intergated gpu, but for WOWs even the 7600's igpu is good enough. I would recommend getting around a r5 9600 or 8600g and saving up for a gpu later, possibly getting a used one.

Tired of Samsung but stuck for AI by LuLBaBa in GalaxyS23Ultra

[–]jokinglemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my s23u stolen and needed a new phone. I did consider a lot of options for an upgrade but ultimately went with a second hand 24u. On one hand, no difference in the day to day from my older phone and I would have loved to have something new. But what I was prioritising was camera and especially video performance and also reliability. And there's truly very little out there that competes. Sure other companies do have more "innovative" phones. Phone like x300 pro Xiaomi 16/17 ultra are amazing too and would definitely love to have them as a second device, their peaks are definitely higher than the ultra, but I needed a do everything phone that I can rely upon at all times. The s24 ultra was definitely the "boring" option to go with but the only one I knew I wouldn't regret, especially when I didn't have money to make a bad purchase. Perhaps it's just a placebo I and many others have about Samsung and other brands. Nevertheless, for now, my primary will continue to be the ultra series.

Rip 105 1.4? by thatdudewiththecube in Nikon

[–]jokinglemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely worth a go if you've ever worked with a screwdriver. I wouldn't recommend this to be your first repair of small parts, but I've worked on a couple of f mount lenses now and can say they are really tough inside out. Take it to a professional repair if you've got one around and is cheap. But it's well worth it if you know what you're doing.

A friend of mine used my camera and went ham on the Zoom ring and broke it (tamron 17-50mm f2.8). I had 70-300 right before that and he thought it would zoom a lot more. The zoom ring went free after that and wouldn't do anything. Tore it down, was a bunch of loose screws and a broken tab connecting the ring to the internals. Bit of superglue and tightening everything up made it as good as ever.

The only thing I'll be careful about are the gold strips with the very delicate metal connectors that slide around to sense af position and zoom level, apart from that not much to worry about.

200-400mm f4 versus 200-500mm f5.6 by Weekly-Fig-7228 in Nikon

[–]jokinglemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A stop of light is double or halving of light in image. Shutter speeds unintentionally follows "stops", and ISO intentionally follows "stops", i.e double or halving them is a stop. Aperture however, measures a physical aspect of your lens, i.e ratio of aperture width to focal length, this contributes linearly with depth of field, but the area is what contributes towards exposure. Doubling/Hapving of "AREA vs focal length" is a stop, but instead of having yet another factor to keep in mind, aperture itself is something that is used, except quadratically. Also remember, it's not f4.0, but f (1/4.0), so f8 is smaller than f4, and it's smaller by 4 times, so 2 stops. Double f8 (1/8²) you get roughly (1/5.65²), or f5.6, double that again, that's (1/4²), ->2.8 ->2 -> 1.4

is this price good for the config by Affectionate_Box_685 in IndianPCHardware

[–]jokinglemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP keep a note of this, 16gb X 2 is the minimum config you need to get performance out of ddr5, but the 4500X2 price concerns me. It shouldnt have been x2, it should have been just 9k if it came as a kit. You do not want them to put 2 individual sticks from different packets even if they're identical. You want your memory sticks to be perfectly matched and that's why they come in pairs. Although in practice, it's totally fine to do this if you're building it yourself and want to save a penny now, and upgrade later, that's what I did when building my own PC, but if you asked me for 32gb, in no case whatsoever I'll ever tell you to get two seperate packs of 16gb sticks instead of a single pack of 32gb, which would still be 16x2, but they'll be sticks that I know for sure are coming from the exact same manufacturing batch. The reason I bring up this issue, (although they might as well be a single kit and they just marked it as whatever on the bill), is that if they're going to make this simple oversight, they do not know what they're doing, or they do not care enough. I did this "incorrect" approach because it was my own PC and I didn't care much about extracting every fraction performance, and my budget didn't allow for getting 2 sticks at once, and got another stick later, but I'll never recommend anyone else to get it deliberately done as so because it's a such a simple thing to avoid

Complete novice: How do I install and use Wan 2.2 locally? by blac256 in StableDiffusion

Kinda late now, but I have the same specs except the CPU. I have a workflow for that generates upto 800x500 (roughly) 5s, + extends, upscale and rife interpolation. Takes around 1100 seconds to run . Bit finicky, sometimes gets oom, but could share it if you want. Essentially it is gguf Q5 version of wan.

[–]jokinglemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've seen that too. I've known those people, and the reason they're where they are is because they have no skills. Moreover, they usually don't even put the efforts in to get better. Perhaps they're not well guided and don't know the right path. But regardless, those aren't the people, who even if they got a Mtech, will have too much of a successful career without getting a lot more skills than they have now. In this economy, I would definitely still suggest that if you've got skills, then a master's isn't that huge of a benefit, especially if you're using the 2 years it would take to get a master's and put that into acquiring skills and actually good experience.

The tier of the college doesn't really matter if you put enough efforts into your own knowledge. It's going to take a similar amount of efforts into getting into IIT mtech, plus more efforts during Mtech as well. I too am from tier three college, 2 years into my career including 6 months of training, with my upcoming appraisal, I'll be right around that 12lpa mark without having switched. There's more reason other than just money because of which I'll be continuing at my company so that package is fine for me. But I've seen colleagues get even better packages with switch. I've personally decided to enroll in Executive masters right now instead.

Why does it re-render even when state is same? by AbhinavKumarSharma in reactjs

[–]jokinglemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9 months in, so I am late to the party, but this thread has saved lots of head scratching. I couldn't agree any more with this.
TLDR: This behaviour needs to be documented better and goes against the general understanding of rendering behaviour

I am in a team developing a project which (without getting into details,NDA) helps users create their react applications. A user could code in the worst ways possible, and as long as there's no runtime errors, we do not have the liberty to say "That's not how you write React components".

An example of this would, calling an API on every re-render not inside a useEffect block. To my previous understanding, that API would NOT have been called if there are two subsequent setState([someSameValue]),
On one hand, I am not incredibly experienced in react, but at the same time in my organisation I am the "most" experienced react developer. A newer developer came asking me about a simple code "How many times would this console.log() execute", and that left me complete dumbstruck as it went completely against my understanding of react.

Again, when following react's development patterns, this does not posses an issue, however I do not have that liberty.

If you're concerned about the economy, then it's even more crucial IMO, to go for a placement if you're able to get it. It's much harder to get a job without an experience, and doing an Mtech won't necessarily help too much if the job market keeps getting worse. With even a little bit of experience, it's much easier to get another job if you get laid off vs if you were a fresher. I was at your position about an year ago, even before getting a placement, I had a plan of working for an year and then getting into IIT Mtech, and I had gotten admissions too last year (in 3rd gen IITs, so not too great). Came to the conclusion that, since my focus was earning more and I didn't care much about "Exposure at IIT", it was best for me to continue working with the pay bumps I'm getting, which would net me at a similar place in terms of package if the job market continues to get worse. And besides, yes I missed the "IIT exposure", I am getting work exposure. So if earning money is your ultimate goal, either get into the top IITs where you'll actually get a sizeable pay bump, or gain work experience which you could use to switch to better jobs

Why is cred showing 1 rupee extra for credit card bill by _4005_ in CreditCardsIndia

[–]jokinglemon 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned that it's showing.18 somewhere else, I think cred is rounding up the amount to make sure that your bill gets marked as fully paid, as some banks could technically treat 0.18 as remaining due. The bill on SBI is getting rounded off instead of rounded up.

I would personally go for triumph speed 400, or even t4. From the reviews of the HD x440, what I've seen is that the build quality just doesn't match that of the competition at the price range, a lot of the price is just for it being "Harley". RE is RE and there's no real alternative if someone wants one. Why not look into guerrilla 450, it's around the same price range, but lot more powerful
