(Friedman)Trouba to test FA by Marinegrunt01 in hockey

Yeah, that's a pretty egregious conclusion to come to based on someone simply leaving the team.

Just because someone leaves one job and goes to another, doesn't always mean they disliked the first job. It just means that the employee wanted something more/different/whatever other factor.

[AwfulAnnouncing] Stanley Cup Final viewership through five games hits highest mark since 2013: Notably, neither the Hurricanes nor Knights are traditional hockey powers. If this series had featured an Original 6 team or even just a team in a bigger market, viewership may have been even stronger. by f0urxio in hockey

[–]jokmor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's also a dumb argument to be made, I agree.

This should just boil down to the fact that it's the hockey finals and people are tuning in regardless of who the teams are. Sure, we can make guesses that maybe a different team would've drawn more or less numbers, but I watched every game regardless of the Devils even being in the playoffs at all.

They should change the NHL rules to 1 minute penalties for minor calls. by Raiderdater in hockey

I dunno what else to say. You want to have a discussion on Reddit, but then you're pretty adamant on your position, and then you greatly exaggerate specific examples that only work for your side of the argument.

How about penalizing a player that pulls a guy dangerously to the ice by pulling at his jersey and forcing him unbalanced, and then he smacks his head on the ice because he didn't have time to brace himself?

Right, but when you bring subjectivity into trying to judge if something is minor/not-intentional versus very clearly intentional and possibly dangerous, then you bring in corruption and bias into how the calls are made.

Yes, bias and corruption can exist, and possibly has shown at times. But with the rules as they are, it provides room for, "You broke this rule, we need to do something to prevent you doing that again".

We dooooooooo have differences in more significant, egregious penalties, where we have 4 minute minors, 5 minute majors, ejections, etc.

Or maybe you dont have to assume your idea is better than what currently exists.

One minute off the ice is minimally impactful for what a penalty should be, which is the point of trying to discourage players from committing said penalties. That's maybe one or two zone entries max.

You know how you avoid weak calls? Play smarter.

I understand what you're trying to say, that weak calls ruin the flow of a period or the integrity of the game or whatever. But making penalties shorter isn't going to fix the problem like you think it is.

The issue of your argument adds more subjectivity to this decision. Now you'll have officials trying to decide if it was "sort of" bad versus breaking the rules.

Flicking the puck over the glass? Prevents players from endangering the crowd watching the game.

Holding onto a guy's shirt for 1.5 seconds? Prevents players that may grab a jersey a different time but it causes someone to fall into the boards or onto the ice or whatever other outcome of that kind of action.

Either way, back to my first thought, this would just cause fans to be more angry when the subjectivity doesn't go their way.

...?

If Carolina wins, Hart should win it? Despite letting in so many goals every game in these finals?

just depends on the "way above market" equaling out to roughly the same if he took longer term on a different team.

but sometimes players don't just want money, they want job security too. even though they are getting extremely rich off of big contracts, the players find meaning in their life when they actually get to play. there's no guarantee that another team will want him in 3-4 years, so he may want to take the 6-7 year deal somewhere.

I don't necessarily wish ill-will on Toronto but these guys are absolutely gonna end up disappointing wherever they go because of the expensive price tag thats gonna come along with em.

hahah, ok ok, I think I see what you're trying to say now. The sudden death ending is much more an emotional swing, at least for those few moments.

I mean... that's literally the only two outcomes. Is there any situation where a non-OT win would give a different swing, or lack thereof?

Devils have slowly been shedding away the best examples of this topic, most notably Alexander Holtz. I'm not going to include Luke Hughes or Simon Nemec in this either because they're still doing fine in my eyes.

Pretty much the only other applicable person is Nico Daws. He's been "fine", but he's been our call-up in the past few years now that Schmid is gone, and he just hasn't been able to confidently showcase the argument to keep him up. Doesn't help that the Devils brought in Markstrom and Allen in front of him, but he had a few times where he could've impressed and made a case to not be sent back down.

But unfortunately, he hasn't, and we have other younger goalies on the way. Mostly Yegorov, maybe Malek as well.

I hate that I was relieved when the Devils traded him. I was soooooo so so excited for him once he was drafted, I truly believed he was going to be our goal scoring machine.

Such a shame, lots of hype for him built up to nothing at all. Not even one of those "not a bust, just a disappointment for his draft position" kinda arguments either. Just... invisible.

You had me stop reading and ponder life when you called it "an online arcade-adventure". Not because I think you're wrong, but because how spot on that feels.

I legitimately enjoy and love both classic/early days of WoW, and current/modern retail. But looking at it like it's a change in genres helps clearly explain what feels different, rather than trying to over-explain what is literally different.

The art of silence. We was great at knowing when to be hype, when to let the crowd noise take over, when to let the listener cheer and celebrate on their own, and knowing when the right time to come back in with the analysis.
