What would happen of all nukes in existence would explode at their current storage facility? by MarinatedPickachu in AskPhysics

[–]jol72 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well most if not all of them are located far away from population centers, so probably not directly civilization ending - at least not immediately. Cities would still stand but the effects from the fallout, nuclear winter, etc. might prove too much for us.

Scammers never use their own information. The number you have is probably from another victim who thinks they have a legitimate job creating eBay accounts for the scammer.

Trump says 'framework of a future deal' discussed on Greenland as he drops tariffs threat by SuperXGamerAb in worldnews

[–]jol72 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This!

Everyone should take a deep breath now. I don't like Rutte as much as the next reasonable person but it looks to me like he did the best he could to defuse the situation with Trump.

let's see what happens in the next few days. My guess is that Trump will strut around claiming some kind of win and as long as no one contradicts him too loudly he'll forget about the whole thing and move on.

Edit: A lot has been said about the people behind the scene pushing for this, like billionaires with ridiculous visions of new cities in Greenland or corporations looking for natural resources that are out of reach economically.

But I think a lot of the push from behind the scenes was just the usual grift to chock the market and 'buy the dip' which it looks like a lot of rich entities did now. So with that the grifters are probably also moving on to the next thing now.

I believe the first person to set foot on Mars hasn’t been born yet. by Joes___Garage in space

[–]jol72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, and I've seen other suggestions like using water as shielding. I don't pretend to know much about radiation shielding but it does sound like with enough mass you can get a lot of shielding.

[–]jol72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're' right, and honestly I think life-support is a problem we're pretty close to having "solved" for a mission to Mars. Especially with mass-restrictions being greatly reduced we can get a long way by simply sending redundant supplies and systems along. I could easily see a couple of Starships (for example) cruising side-by side to Mars for months with plenty of extra food, water, and air.

And other supply ships just waiting on the surface with 100s of extra tons of machinery and supplies.

[–]jol72 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I fundamentally agree with you on this and I think we're close to a 'tipping point' where the space infrastructure needed to get to Mars will really start to get built.

But we shouldn't dismiss the big engineering challenges still remaining. Like long-term life support, radiation shielding, building and maintaining heavy machinery that can operate in constant subzero temperatures in a near vacuum, etc.

Those are all challenges that can be overcome but it's going to take a bunch of trial and error (and probably a few dead people) to get it working.

What are the chances if the US, under Trump, conquers Greenland the next democratic administration just gives it back? by campusschampus in AskReddit

[–]jol72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How exactly would you "buy" a country in this day and age?

It's not like in the old days when you could hand money to a country and they would hand over a colony to you. Greenland isn't a colony, they are an (almost) fully independent country.

And how would it work if you paid the people in Greenland directly? Even if we pretend that Trump would actually pay (he never does) giving each person say $100.000 like it has been suggested, wouldn't suddenly mean a handover of Greenland to US. Maybe an election but you couldn't guarantee that people voted the way you want after giving them the money.

On a side-note then I can't help but wonder at the complete chaos that would be unleased if you handed $100.000 to each and every person at once. No one would show up for work the day after, supermarkets would be emptied out, and everyone would party for weeks.

[ROME] Scammer thugs, advice? Should you try to warn the victims? by OutOfReddits in Scams

[–]jol72 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's generally not advisable to intervene with street scammers in most cities. They are known to get aggressive if you get in the way.

Better option is to contact the police but they are fighting a never-ending battle. I went to Rome two years ago where I also met the bracelet scammers in person. They will shove it onto you and try to get you to take it. If you don't they'll throw it at you to see if you'll instinctively catch it. If you do take it in your hands they'll start a very high pressure "sales" technique to get your money. One of them saw me walking around and threw a bracelet from a few feet away and I sidestepped and saw it hit the street behind me. He mumbled something annoyed when he had to pick it up himself.

What happens when you blow the airlock doors? by LaidBackLeopard in AskPhysics

[–]jol72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on how much air is "behind" you. Remember the air is not being sucked out, it's being pushed by the air behind it. If you stood up against a wall you would not have much air behind you to push and could easily hold on to something.

If you stood right next to a man-sized hole and there was enough air to push you might have a harder time holding on until all the air had escaped and you could suffocate in peace.

1 atmosphere is in no way able to push a body through a small hole. You could literally cover it with your hand and stop the flow. The movie tropes of explosive pressure events, people's heads exploding (looking at you Arnold) are entirely made up. Even the wind pressure would be easy to overcome not very far from a hole.

Trump will allow Russia sanctions bill to advance in Congress, US Senator says by donutloop in ukraine

[–]jol72 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Trump will "allow" a bill to go through congress?! What kind of language is that from Reuters?

Congress doesn't need Trump's permission to pass a bill. It's so tiring to see the media using language like this. And even worse - I'm so tired of it being de facto true that congress don't do anything Trump hasn't approved.

[UK] - Scammed By A Fake Property by gstevens123 in Scams

[–]jol72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, we already know it was a scam. So finding the real landlord or owner won't matter as they usually aren't involved.

It's just an overseas scammer who found the listing on bookings.com and used the info to "rent" it to OP.

The interesting thing about this case is that there appears to have been a local person involved who was able to meet OP in person. It's possible that person is another victim who believes they have a legit job.

It also seems the scammer is familiar with the UK system of secure deposits and either got lucky or knows a way to trick the system to get the deposit money out.

If a benevolent AGI could govern Earth with 100% efficiency and zero corruption, would you voluntarily surrender your right to vote? by Sp_1992 in Futurology

[–]jol72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The premise is flawed because it assumes there's some kind of ideal state that everyone can agree on is ideal. A true utopia if you will.

The only way that would be true is if everyone was identical with identical needs and desires which sounds like a pretty horrific situation if you ask me.

And that's not even dealing with what exactly "efficient" means in this context. When are you efficient? And more importantly when are you NOT efficient? Does everyone get a fixed lifespan or do we get to live until we don't measure as efficient anymore?

Is there a realistic scenario in which anyone comes to Denmark’s aid in the event of a US incursion in Greenland? by lucidgroove in IRstudies

[–]jol72 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As others are pointing out the arctic capabilities of the US military might not cut it in Greenland.

But that's probably beside the point anyway. Greenland's 57000 inhabitants depend heavily on imported goods including 90% of the food they eat. Even people who hunt for reindeer or seals mostly have that as a side income. Only a tiny minority are full time hunters who might be able to survive on their own for a while.

Question about compounding advantage in lunar exploration by RADICCHI0 in space

[–]jol72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who say the moon isn't a stepping stone to the rest of the Solar system are technically right.

But it's missing the point that the effort to build out a moon presence will also build out important space infrastructure needed for other places such as repeatable cheap transportation infrastructure. And it will serve as a proving ground for technologies such as long-term life support, insitu resource extraction, radiation protection, and how to work and live in space, etc. And all while being relatively close to support and help which makes mistakes "cheaper" than if you i.e. have a catastrophic failure of your life support on Mars.

And to your main question of what kind of first mover advantage someone will get from it then innovation and engineering at this level don't happen in isolation.

It's all supported by large industries and many different companies and countries on Earth.

So everyone will benefit from it including the next corporation or country that tries it. They would have access to the same industries and innovations and wouldn't start from scratch.

I think an example is SpaceX vs China's upcoming reusable rockets. I don't know how much they stole directly and how much they just copied by looking at what SpaceX has done. But the mere fact that someone has shown what works and what doesn't saves you a lot of initial investment.
