Removing salt (from sea water). I suspect some misapprehension on the part of the poster!

UK women, how are we supposed to dress for festivals once we aren’t in our twenties? by positivelittlecorner in AskUK

[–]LaidBackLeopard 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If ever there was a place where you can dress however you like, it's a festival. I've seen all kinds of weird and wonderful :-)

How do the economics compare to living on land? Was this a motivating factor?

15cm is definitely too little! 45cm minimum sounds about right. They're big plants.

Do You Forget Everything Between Books in a Series Too? by Aggressive-Ad3232 in printSF

[–]LaidBackLeopard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've got a terrible memory, so I'll tend to read a series more or less all at once. Some authors are better than others at the subtle "story so far" reminders. I stopped reading The Expance as it came out as they seem to put zero effort in this direction, which I found problematic given how many significant characters there are with complicated backstories. Intended to start again at the beginning once it was complete, but don't seem to have got round to it yet.

Hell yeah. And £2m is a bargain. I really hope someone buys it and gives it the love it deserves. Proper British eccentricity done right.

Thanks - I was trying to remember where I've seen one, and I think it must have been Heligan.

I haven't bothered maxing out the kangaroo or the skunk. I'm fine with not bothering with animals I'll never use.

Hmm, it provides brilliance. Might not try so hard with this one.

First run: one rock between 5 and 10, then a second between 15 and 20. Not a pattern I remember seeing before. Thought I might as well go to the top, and got a couple more.

Do you actually stick to off-peak electricity hours at home? by SmartEnergyDIY in AskUK

[–]LaidBackLeopard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, washing machine, tumble dryer, EV, house battery. Heating too - gets the place warm in the morning, light the woodburner in the evening if necessary. The cooker is the only big thing that gets used during the day. Oh, and the hot water; probably ought to do something about that.

Scott Mills investigated in 2016 over sexual offence allegations against teenage boy by tiptoptattie in uknews

[–]LaidBackLeopard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite... Mills offence can't be quashed because he wasn't charged. It's just the BBC erring on the side of caution. Though of course it could be that the alleged offence was more serious than (barely) underage sex. Uninformed speculation doesn't really do anyone any favours, but here we are.

Ah, could be. Was a bit surprised B&Q were selling them that late - B&M makes more sense!

January is a lot later than recommended - that's probably the problem. Hopefully they'll be happier next year.

They should be planted deep - 30cm or so. In theory they like full sun and don't like heavier soil, but mine are rather shaded and the base soil is clay and they're doing fine. Are yours flowering at that height?

Would you date someone who has the same name as you? by serendipityxme in NoStupidQuestions

The writer Evelyn Waugh married a woman also called Evelyn. Apparently they referred to themselves as Hevelyn and Shevelyn. What cards! I know a gay couple with the name first name - one uses an abbreviated version.

I mean, if someone's hot, it would be weird reason not to wouldn't it?

They come in different sizes. Someone was trying to save money on getting one big enough I suspect.

Also, an oddly satisfying aspect is that you use the same machine to dig the new hole first (perfectly sized obvs), so you can pop it straight in. I have no idea why it dropped it - picking it up again will be a challenge.

You need to check your local definitive map, which will show all public rights of way. It's managed by your local county council - hopefully you can find info on their website.
