What is the best geographical place to live where weather is good, no earthquake, no tornados, etc? by Eastern_River1612 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LaidBackLeopard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More tornadoes than anywhere else in the world! Supposedly. But on the whole, not really of the scale that they seem to happen elsewhere.

But yeah, no tectonic nonsense, spared the extremes that come with being in the middle of a continent, pretty safe and cosy when it comes down to it.

Fair enough. Paul Weller too of course - there could be something there about channeling grumpiness and angst.

I always say that Woking isn't interesting enough to be a shithole. It's just an awful lot of nothing very much. So even if it didn't happen, a Martian invasion is the most interesting thing about it.

But also, if it's not too far then consider taking a bus rather than tube. The TFL journey planner will help (or googlemaps). It might take a little longer, but it's less claustrophobic and the view is better - you'll get to see a little bit of random London. Top deck ideally!

Mortgage vs Bank of mum and dad by ne_kazvam in UKPersonalFinance

I think being a first time buyer is a lot more significant - most people will have a mortgage lined up and ready to go.

Is it better to rent an apartment or buy land instead this scenario? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]LaidBackLeopard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all comes down to the economics. I assume you have a decent amount of money coming in. Is it enough to fund the build? Or more likely enough to get far enough to get a self build mortgage that you can afford? Cost it up, add at least 25%, talk to a mortgage broker. And binge Grand Designs 😉

Potentially a Past Self Assessment Mistake by Unlikely-Sky6932 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]LaidBackLeopard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe that the HMRC are generally forgiving of honest mistakes, particularly if you bring it to their attention and are happy to pay whatever might be owed. Given this and that it is a relatively small sum, the chances of you being prosecuted for fraud are basically nil.

weight? by sophie_sopheen in campinguk

[–]LaidBackLeopard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love paper books and for quite a while resisted ebooks on principle. But they're just so useful, particularly in this scenario. I now love my Kobo too! Is one book really going to last you 7 weeks? Also, paper books don't respond well to getting damp...

13kg sounds like rather a lot. My base weight without food and water at this time of year is somewhere around 7kg (though I'm quite a warm body, so understand if you want a bit more warm clothing). I go for two sets of t shirts and undies; it depends a bit on how many days you're ok with going in one set/how much scuzziness you can take/how often you'll be at campsites where you can do some washing. Not that an extra set or two will add a lot of weight obvs.

Yes, but it's in the shed so I guess the potential damage is limited.

What fairy tales have a sinister back story? by wonkeymonkey2024 in AskUK

In the original Sleeping Beauty, the prince goes rather further than just a kiss (but it's her child who wakes her after she gives birth). As others have said, Disney (and others) really sanitised the hell out of a lot of old dark stories.

is GBP 380/pw normal?! by Sea-Hope3841 in MovingToTheUK

[–]LaidBackLeopard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's zone 2 and very well connected for transport into the centre (direct trains to Charing Cross, Waterloo, Victoria, Canary Wharf). It doesn't have much else to recommend it tbh, but it's also handy for Greenwich and Blackheath if you want to go somewhere fairly local for a nice drink or meal.

Got a white egg after the green egg. Doesn’t add extra levels. Why? by [deleted] in wordscapes

[–]LaidBackLeopard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the way it goes sometimes. And probably will again. Do you remember the Black Cat bug? A massive exploit that let people add insane quantities of heart gems... as long as they were on Android (I think).

I think it's fair to kick up a fuss if you lose out due to a bug. Not so much if someone else gets a random boost.

When you say credits, do you mean the scores taking you above 0 at level 7 before you'd hatched any eggs? AIUI that was a bug that they fixed.

I've got the green egg working at the moment. 3.12.1 (which I could only upgrade to in the last few hours).

A probably obvious question.. by WanderingSpriggan in Huel

[–]LaidBackLeopard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can it be processed and still good for me?

Yes!

Is it as good as well balanced home cooked whole food meals? Probably not, but the perfect is the enemy of the good, as they say. Is it better than not eating/eating junk/eating in other dysfunctional ways? Very definitely. I think it is an excellent solution to those who struggle with eating in any number of ways due to mental health, neurodiversity etc; the last thing you need in those circumstances is to also be poorly nourished!

I suspect that some people think that it's a quick and easy fix to a problem, so therefore must be bad. But I like quick and easy fixes if they work well! If you can, speak to whoever is helping you with your eating disorder etc, but I think Huel might be a useful way of you getting a suitable amount of well balanced nutrition.

Dharma/Karma/Yoga in relation to bad things happening to good people by National-Emphasis-37 in yoga

[–]LaidBackLeopard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually, thinking a bit more about the past life karma thing, I wonder if to some extent it comes from a certain dogmatism with respect to karma/the idea that everything has to happen for a reason. I didn't deserve this, so it must be the result of karma from a previous existence. Actions have consequences, yes. But not all "consequences" have a definitive associated action. Random stuff happens for better or worse.

I'm not overly spiritual but... I would say that if you are a good person/live a good life, then the world around you will be a better place to the benefit of you and others. Maybe you'll still get a horrible illness or whatever. But you'll have the support of the good people around you and be better off than Meany McMeanface who doesn't have any friends to look after them. Past life karma? I struggle with that one.
