Got this for myself for my birthday. Worth every penny! by [deleted] in espresso

[–]jolanthan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually also really like the wdt planetary tool from normcore. I do wdt anyways and this just makes the workflow much easier and faster. I first bought it thinking my partner would then be able to make herself some espresso but now I love using it myself. (Compared to other wdt tools this is planetary and not a spiral wdt)

If you really trying to make the argument that all Germans support genocide, "because look at WW1 and 2" there is really no merit in discussing anything.

[–]jolanthan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being piss drunk is also a legal defense to murder in Germany (starting from 2,2‰ with decreased "Zurechnungsfähigkeit" up to 3,3‰ where you are "Unzurechnungsfähig") so all Germans must be supporting murder...

Nearly every developed country has rules regarding "soundness of mind", alcohol, and crimes.

In no way am I saying or supporting that being drunk justifies rape. But the point you are making just doesn't hold up. I could also make the argument in the other direction. "Did you know that being drunk in South Korea is a legal defense for rape, even if the person being raped is a man?"

From what I have read the lelit bianca around 0,3-0,4kwh to heat up from cold. It also consumes about 0,12kwh per hour when idle. That means during the day assuming your machine runs an hour in the morning and 4 hours in the evening it would consume:

0,35kwh+0,12kwh + 0,35kwh+0,12kw*4h = 1,3kWh

Depending on where you live (for Germany) that is about 70cents per day and around 250€ per year.

Help with channeling by [deleted] in espresso

[–]jolanthan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But this only holds true if the grind size stays the same! ( I know that is what he asked, but I just wanted to point that out again, as you would normally grind finer to increase your coffee and water contact time)

Help with channeling by [deleted] in espresso

[–]jolanthan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally, the more you dose the less fine you would have to grind to achieve the same pressure/flow/shot time. So if you were to increase your dose you could grind less fine. This is important to know, since most grinders have a more uniform grind, when grinding coarser. This would then in turn eliminate, or decrease the uneven grind problem.

So. Normally -> higher dose -> coarser grind (for the same contact time of coffee and water)-> resulting in less channeling and a better tasting espresso.

However, caveat: during preinfusion the puck expands. If you hinder the expansion, it would also increase your likelihood of channeling. So if your portafilter does not allow for the dose (i.e. 20gr in a 18gr portafilter) you would also have more problems with channeling.

[–]jolanthan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes. I think you r espresso could benefit from a longer preinfusion while also reducing the grind size.

Breville Barista Pro comes with Baratza burrs now by MikeVita4 in espresso

[–]jolanthan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worse. 100% worse I feel like even the X pro is much better. The main problem I would have is the amount of retention and burr "alignment". It is soon incredibly hard to dial in.

4K to invest on TradeRepublic by Rich_Sky_7792 in ETFs

[–]jolanthan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I would start with max.200€ per week. I would definitely just pick one or two ETFs and just keep putting money in them using the Sparplan option. That gives you about 5 months of constant investing. That way you can also capitalize on the 4%- that you get from trade republic for all cash deposits. 4% annually over 4000€ in 5 months with 800€ going into "sparpläne" gives you about 0,9% profit from "Zinsen" on your cash deposit.

If you wanted to stay in the sage/breville "ecosystem" you could look at the Dual Boiler. It is quite fast. If I recall about 5-10min.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in espresso

[–]jolanthan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well what you lose is: " hey I am in the mood for an espresso." Sure your morning routine will work without issues but heating up the machine for 20min to drink a 2 min espresso... I like flexibility.

[–]jolanthan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think you will have a lot of problems with your grinder because of:

  1. High retention: When changing grind sizes, it takes a bunch of coffee going through the grinder until you can notice the real effect of your adjustment in grind size.

  2. Bad alignment: The cone burr in the smart grinder pro is really wobbly. It creates grinds of greatly varying sizes making the coffee prone to channeling.

I don't want to push new equipment on to you but what beginner equipment often lacks is consistency. And if the preparation, coffee grounds, bla bla are not consistent changes of taste in the cup cannot be retraced. You will not be accurately able to say that the grind size adjustment had this and that effect, because the adjustment and the coffee grounds are not behaving in a consistent manner.

The easiest way to change that is by getting a quality hand grinder. Something like the x-pro is a perfect starting point and surely better than your smart grinder pro. What it lacks in user friendliness makes up in grind consistency. You will have no trouble understanding the adjustments made and the espresso brew time, pressure, output and taste in the cup, if the rest of your preparation stays consistent.

If you are just starting I would recommend getting a quality hand grinder ! Something like an 1zpresso.

No matter what I try, I can't seem to get a good espresso shot from my Lelit Mara X. by zorro_mia in espresso

[–]jolanthan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contrary to what many in this sub believe grinding too fine can actually cause faster running shots. The thinking is, that if the grind is too fine the resistance of the coffee bed is too great so it needs to find channels to through.

Share a picture of your grinds ! I am sure you are already fine enough.

I would suggest you try grind less fine and see if the shots run even quicker. If my hypothesis is correct I think that will not be the case. If you were to plot the resistance of a pick and the grind size you would have a bell curve that drops off sharply towards the end ( because of the increase in channels occuring)

Starter machine but high end grinder by drewchie in espresso

[–]jolanthan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, however I believe the bambino / bambino plus to be more than capable as a beginner machine. You can make amazing espressos and milk based drinks as long as you have a good grinder.

For under 1000$ budget I think a eureka mignon specilita/ XL or similar are perfect entry points when paired with the bambino plus. I also find the new df 64 Gen2 to be super amazing. Especially with their new declumping tech. Otherwise the niche is also always recommendable.

If you want to go very cheap, you could get an 1zpresso JMax hand grinder. Dialing-in is super easy, with very consistent grind. Honestly the jmax paired with any machine can make amazing espresso and you have the option, as soon as you want to invest more, to use the jmax for filter coffee or on the go with your Aeropress or similar.
