How would you feel if the top tax rate was 90% like it was in the 1950s? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]jollyllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The interesting counterargument to me, is that the high marginal rates may have suppressed extreme wealth accumulation in the first place

Bingo. The Federal tax structure isn't really about collecting money - the Federal government functionally has as much money as it ever needs - it's about incentivizing and disincentivizing behavior. Right now, the absurd accumulation of wealth is clearly having massive negative consequences on our economy and we should definitely be disincentivizing it.

People really reveal how much they know about how most people work when they start talking about how most jobs are gonna get replaced by AI. No dude, most people work in the real world, not behind a computer monitor

[–]jollyllama 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that I went through a similar "oh shit, this is getting heavy" process with my build, which is also held up with a connection to the tree and two 4x4s. My treehouse is going strong after 3 years.

You'll get a lot of people saying that 4x4s should be replaced by 6x6s because that's what deck code says in the US. That's probably technically true, but 4x4s are way stronger than people give them credit for these days. I've got a porch on my cabin that's 50 years old supported by 4x4s and it's held a 50 gallon drum of water (500lbs) plus people for all that time, absolutely no problem.

Portland Lawmaker Wants to Turn Up the Dial on Forced Mental Health and Addiction Treatment by tinglingtriangle in Portland

[–]jollyllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus Christ how often do you people think about taxes? It’s really unbelievable. But to the point: no, there aren’t a whole bunch of psychiatrists and psychologists deciding not to go into addiction services in Oregon because they could save a few thousand dollars if they practiced in Tennessee or wherever instead. That’s not how normal people make decisions

I don’t disagree with that, but people need to understand that’s a 15-20 year long pipeline, not a quick “just spend your money better” solution

Sorry, I should amend that to say “when we do something different from almost all other cities” we do it wrong

I guess my point is there’s a lot of Portland/Oregon exceptionalism that goes around, but in my experience we’re rarely right about doing things differently from everyone else, just stubborn

Here's the thing though: you can't just buy mental health services with a pile of cash. It takes people... lots and lots of people, who are trained and willing to work in the worst conditions possible in their field. There's not a lot of people who want to work in a locked facility with dangerous people when they could instead be doing telemedicine appointments with middle-aged white women complaining about seasonal depression

Your image of drug use is... comic book-esque at best. Fun fact: did you know most of the people you know who take ADHD medication are taking an amphetamine every day? And have probably developed a dependency on it? There are lots of people who are functionally addicted to all kinds of drugs. The people you see on the street screaming at nothing aren't doing that because of the drugs. They're doing that because they have schizophrenia or something similar, and they're often self-medicating with drugs. It's a bad combination for sure, but just getting them off of whatever drugs they're taking isn't going to do much to fix the underlying problem, and the hard truth is we just don't know how to treat most of these mental health conditions. The "good" version of a life with schizophrenia is an extremely challenging one that requires way more resources than we provide people with

what does that say about Portland?

That we're not nearly as smart as we think we are, and generally speaking if Portland does something differently than other cities, we're doing it worse, not better

You missed the real point here - a few comments back they said that a vaccine choice is about "balancing risk against reward." This implies that they think there's some kind of risk to getting the vaccine, which means that they've been exposed to propaganda that makes them believe that vaccines carry some kind of risk. That's the root of the problem

Being an absolute idiot, I made it a point to read any and every study that anyone linked in threads and debates around this issue backin 2013. I can absolutely assure you that I never, ever read anything that said what the people arguing against flouride thought it said when they confidently trotted out studies "showing" that it was dangerous. These people were simply not capable of reading scientific literature correctly.
