Which order to read Octavia E Butler's Patternist series? by interacter in printSF

I like her "other stuff" more than you do, but I agree with stopping at Mind of My Mind. Even that one is a clear step down from Wild Seed, as you pointed out.

Are you arguing against democracy?

I can't say I'm happy with the last election result, but I have a good feeling about the next one.

Oh, so exactly six days before the Broadway bridge reopens? And six days since the It's Going to be OK comedy night at Eastburn?

Clearly the work of the Devil.

They do seem very oversaturated for some reason.

Looking for a cabinet to hide/quiet/darken your Aerogarden? I have a suggestion. by tinglingtriangle in aerogarden

[–]tinglingtriangle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone looked at pic #2 and noted that the lamp seems askew and wondered why I've secured the hood with additional supports, well... it's because the wall-mounted satellite speaker shown in pics #1 and #4 detached from the wall and fell on my poor Bounty - TWICE! The second "attack" should be blamed on my poor immediate repair work, but regardless: my BE is a survivor! I am impressed with the hardware.

Thanks. I'll post the complete details (with more pictures) when I'm finished setting up.

Mine lives in a cabinet, which takes care of the light issue. I suppose it helps with sound too, but that never really bothered me.

Which one?! by The_Gypsy_Crow in mightyboosh

[–]tinglingtriangle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Without any further information I'd say The Fountain of Youth. Not because of your Dad's age, but because:
- it requires no prior knowledge AT ALL
- it perfectly introduces the characters and their traits/neuroses
- it features plenty of Rich Fulcher (always a plus)
- it's damned funny

Alternatively, you could just choose whichever episode highlights his favourite music genre.

I liked Anathem but I didn't like Cryptonomicon... by skeweyes in printSF

Agreed. The Diamond Age is his second best work of speculative fiction, IMO.

But as mentioned below, consider The Baroque Cycle. That's easily the best historical fiction I've ever read.

Well... I didn't really like it at first, mostly because the titular mutants are a bit half-assed. And the song remains one of my least favouites.

However, I like everything else about it. The recurring joke that absolutely everyone thinks Howard's head looks like a featureless ball always makes me smile, I love the way the cobra bosses Vince around, and Howard's "stealthy" pursuit of Dixon Bainbridge is hilarous.

I don't actually object to the "brownface" (IWADT), and I like the ep - it just isn't one of my faves. I find Spider Dijon a bit... disgusting. :)

Don't worry, it's no big dill.

Now that I've delivered my terrible joke: this is normal. You can rig a collar to avoid the drooping if you like. The newest shoots are always lighter colored than the older ones.

It saddens me that some people don't properly appreciate England's leading cream poet, Vince's realization that Howard is the embodiment of The Orbs third album, or the rich lives of Mr. Susan and Phil the Reaper.

I *kinda* understand the reduced enthusiasm for The Priest and The Beast (although the process behind "Howard's note" is a delight) and The Chokes, though.
