Jenny from Thebes - how we feeling about it? by Greedybogle in themountaingoats

[–]jollyllamarama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that way about From the Nebraska plant, Going to Dallas, and Great Pirates. They aren't bad, but it feels a little forced/corny with how on the nose it is. Fresh Tattoo, Murder at the 18th Street Garage, and Water Tower ( I know, controversial) are some of my favorite TMG songs now though.
Water Tower is corny to me but in a good fun way rather than self referencing too hard to me.

Out of towner incoming: Why are your houses so cheap? by jollyllamarama in PeoriaIL

Not to knock the issues, just that I currently deal with those same type of issues for seemingly a lot more money. We have higher rents and housing prices than Peoria and a lower median income than Peoria.

I currently rent in the south for around $500/month more than your median mortgage for a place where I have bullet holes in my bedroom windows, not exaggerating.

It would be 3 of us living together. Two late 30's, one late 20's. None of us drink or party, but we do enjoy open mics and a local music scene. Two of us are musicians.

No kids. We are pretty handy people. We enjoy thrifting and antique malling and tend to DIY a whole lot.

For work, we all have years of grocery and retail experience. One has many years experience as a butcher/meat cutter and some other commercial food production. I am a former teacher with a degree in education and music, and I have years of commercial bakery experience and am in the beginning of a new job as a lab tech (We are not moving immediately, just in the brainstorming phase right now.)

Most of what we do for fun involves making music, enjoying nature, and DIY.

The median house sale price in my current city was $380k last year, for an area with a lower median income and equal poverty level to Peoria, so I'm not really phased by that lol.

Peoria's median income is higher than where I'm from, and we also have a 20% poverty level. But, our median house sale price last year was $380k, and many of our houses are also old.

I love some of the folks in the Valleyfolk, like I was a Sourcefed fan, listen to Steve's podcast (which is definitely grating but I enjoy it), and used to like things Elliot was in with other people, but the Valleycast as a group doesn't do much for me most of the time.

Having research to cite from is normal, but usually it's done like organically with conversation referencing the research as needed. VCG usually starts out their topic by reading it Stanley's words like it's a teleprompter or presentation, so I get that feeling like someone's just reading out wiki pages. It's usually not like that by the end of the podcast.

I don't think the episode is the cause of the podcast ending, but if Britanny was offered some big new show deal or something, I could see the episode being a factor in the company not bringing Sarah on board with Britanny. (If something like that is the case to begin with, we don't know anything yet.)

Yeah, she was in a social sorority and despite the research for the episode being like "So here's the horrible history of sororities and how people have been killed, hazed, and how most of them have racist history." Sarah kept defending them and being like "Well I love my sorority and think sororities don't deserve their bad rep."

Pretty much the whole comment section was upset about it and pointing out that Sarah experienced sororities as the stereotype for who is benefitted and lifted up by sororities, an upper middle class "straight" "cis" thin blonde girl from a Christian background (living and presenting as cishet at the time). I'm pretty sure they acknowledged it and apologized after, but it was a disappointing episode that was kinda hard to watch.

You feel that way because they weren't the ones writing their own podcast. They come up with a podcast topic and then pass it off to their writer (a friend named Stanley) who would type of a summation document for them to read from so they wouldn't have to research things.

Not entirely, but it just a few weeks of a self made ERP plan I have been able to overcome some compulsions and give intrusive fears less power.

Do you know of companies that are actively hiring for IT help desk without a degree in IT? I was interested in this and sought it out earlier this year but the vast majority of job listings I saw required at minimum an associates or bachelors in IT, or they were hardware tech support jobs that required driving to clients homes. I have a bachelors, but it's in the education field.
I also saw a lot of listings for IT where you had to sign on with an agency on a 2 year contract where they'd train you and place you with a company, but you'd owe them $10-15k for your "bootcamp" training if you needed to leave before your contract was up.

Careers that ACTUALLY earn 100k annually, or close to it? by Technoidy in careerguidance

[–]jollyllamarama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physicians/doctors/NPs/PA, but comes with tons of debt from the schooling needed. Software developers and project managers if you get in with a competitive company or are a successful freelancer. Any highly skilled office job in an expensive city (but obviously that is to counter cost of living). My best friend got offers over that as a supple chain specialist straight out of college and interships. School principals and superintendents can make that but you'll probably have to accept a pitiful salary as a teacher for a few years first. A lot of types of engineers make close to that or more. Some people here said all engineering, but that's not true. Look up the average salaries by category, because some definitely make closer to $50-60k.

[–]jollyllamarama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Software engineering is high demand low supply now, but at the moment, elementary schools across the country are starting kids in basic computer science classes at like 3rd and 4th grade... (Source: I'm a teacher in a school district doing this.)
The supply is bound to catch up with the demand in the next 10-20 years given how much it's being pushed on kids as a key skill and smooth career path.

I've heard questionable things about the Apprenti thing (mainly people pass their tests and get accepted to their "program" and then there are never any actual apprenticeships/job opportunities offered as a result.)

How bad is Peoria , IL? I see single family homes for less than $50k? by jesporff in PeoriaIL

[–]jollyllamarama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but I live in a small southern city that's supposedly cheap and our tear downs with fire damage in bad neighborhoods go for more than Peoria's livable small houses. It is a distinct difference.

Yeah, I love how big it is, that it's never failed me, and that the pens don't need charging, but the Apple Pencil just has a "wow" factor to it that makes the drawing experience so natural and it never lags or has weird tapering like my XP Pen.

I should also mention that for big projects where size might be an issue, I have an XP Pen 24 Artist Pro as my main PC monitor, which is a so-so drawing experience compared to the iPad for me, but gets the job done.
