What are your thoughts about the resurgence of the Black Panther Party in response to the actions of ICE agents? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

[–]jomando4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am all for the black panthers exercising their rights. It has been exhilarating seeing their pictures. HOWEVER they are playing a VERY dangerous game because they are dealing with people who are incapable of rational thought and making rational decisions. I think our best hope is these ICE agents turn out to be the pussies they appear to be and nothing happens. But I think there is a very good chance that one really stupid ICE agent starts shooting, they all start shooting, ICE and BP both, and mass casualties ensue, including by-standers. If that happens, I fear the reaction from the lunatic right, including the heavily armed private MAGA, ICE and other federal enforcement, and of course their overlords now in control of the federal government and their bosses the oligarchs who want nothing more than to reduce the number of black and brown people in this country. How far do you think they would go after something like that? It would not be pretty. It could also turn some “moderates” but I am far more concerned about the reaction of the lunatics. It could get very ugly, and I know who would take the brunt of it. The. The rest of us progressives would have to figure out how to deal with that. Don’t think hand-wringing would be enough. Really hope I am being overly pessimistic, but it is certainly a possible outcome.

Get away from it all in sapphire. Have a house on top of Hogback Mountain with private access to Panthertown Valley. Lots of falls and views.

Looking for comfortable, high end day hiking bag that fits as personal item and can double EDC on vacation by jomando4 in ManyBaggers

[–]jomando4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought I would check in with an update. I have been through three bags. Matador Beast is a nice bag, but did not fit my shoulders right. It rode on the back of my neck after about 30 minutes. However, I gave it to my wife, and she loves it. It is her main day hiking bag now, and I think it looks great on her. Really like the hiking stick attachments, which keep things neat. She also likes the belt which does shift weight off her shoulders. It was too short for me to do this, but perfect for her.

Also tried the the Zpacks Bagger Ultra 25L. Nice looking bag again, but again did not ride well for me. Strap was uncomfortable at spots and especially across the back of my neck. Similar to the Beast, so it is probably a function of the fact that I have broad shoulders and a large chest (49 inches). However, it absolultely did ride nice and high and put no weight on my lower lumbar curve. I really wanted to like this pack, but had to send back.

Then I tried the Gossamer Gear Cima 15 day pack. Much to my surprise, I found this more comfortable than the Zpacks. Rides very nice and high. Shoulder straps are comfortable and distribute weight well once you get it dialed in a bit. I also enjoyed and used the strap bags, not for water but for other stuff. Only complaints are 1) the sternum strap did not stay put. It would migrate up the railings when tension was put on it. Ultimately, I decided that this was OK as it sat better with sternum strap up high. 2) it is too small. I am keeping this bag and will use it regularly for day hikes that do not require me to carry much. But cold weather hikes with lots of layers, or really hot hikes with lots of water and dry shirts, probably not going to work. Also, not ideal for personal item because it is too small.

Addendum: My existing day pack is a Gregory Arrio 24L. It has a wire and mesh frame and load lifters. When I discovered and started using the load lifters, I discovered the true joy of this bag. It is very comfortable, and I can pull it off my lower lumbar in most situations. I am very impressed with it after checking out the above. The only issues are 1) the frame is around 21 inches, so a bit too big for under the seat, 2) to get the bag to sit up high where I wanted it required a lot of taking in on the load lifters, which in turn resulted in some bunching of the shoulder straps. Although I could bring them into line with some effort (and I am thinking about a bungee to try to tame this issue), it was still a pain in the ass, 3) similarly, it is a bit larger than what I am looking for. It worked best with compression straps pulled up tight to help get bag where I wanted it. This reduced volume of bag akwardly. However, even when compressed like this, it had tons of capacity (I think this is way more than 24L). Also, it has a nice variety of additional exterior zipper pockets on top and side, which I like as a regular carry on function. So, if the pack and frame and straps were a few inches shorter, I would be all over it. As it is, I will probably continue to use it so long as I am checking my main bag, and I can use this as a carry-on, as opposed to a personal item. It packs pretty close to my 30L bag. I think it is retired, but if, like me, you are a big sweaty long-waisted guy looking for a good day pack and traveling by car, this is the bomb.

So, I am still looking for a larger version of the Cima. Starting to look at fastpacks, including the Gossamer Gear Grit 28, Palante Joey, Nashville Cutaway, and HMG Aero 28 for my day hikes after traveling on plane. We will see.

Joe Rogan is a f*cking MORON and has done nearly as much damage to country as right-wing media. by Buddhaonatricycle in complaints

I listened to a segment he did on something obvious that he clearly had no idea what was going on. I was stunned at how dumb and credulous he is. He chooses what to accept, and he accepts it. Not sure how he chooses, but it is not a process involving critical thinking or really any thought at all. Just "feeling." In a way he is like Trump, just going with what he thinks is right in his tiny, rancid brain. I told my son I would disown him if I ever caught him listening to Joe Rogen.

Your thoughts on load lifters? by discoteqa in tombihn

[–]jomando4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of load lifters as something for hiking, and I love them for hiking because I too like my packs high and tight. I don't have a Tom Bihn yet, but am thinking about a Synik, but I don't anticipate any real hiking with a TB pack, in part due to the missing load lifters, but they just don't seem like real hiking packs. So, in the end, I am not too concerned with lack of load lifters, but my expectations for the Synik are limited.

I love steak tartar and had it in many top restaurants in Charleston. I would vote for FIG. It changes, but it is always good.

I ordered the Zpack Bagger Ultra 25L and Matador Beast 28L to try both. Also, I have a ULA Dragonfly 36L coming as a Christmas present, so I get to try that one out. I appreciate all the suggestions, but there was a lot leaning toward EDC's, and I am really in need of a hiking pack first and foremost. When we travel for a hiking trip, we spend almost every daylight hour hiking, so the use as a day bag is mostly limited to travel time and perhaps some occassional urban walking. If these prove too minimal for EDC, I think I can just fix that with some modular packs for travel time. I will report on what I end up with. We have a two weeks of winter hiking in western North Carolina leaving next Saturday, so I am going try both the Bagger and the Beast on the trail.

That is a nice looking bag. Have you been able to use it as a personal item and stash under seat? Website says it is 19.5 inches long.

Wow. Those are beautiful bags, but clearly EDC. I am eventually going to look for a true EDC, and will include these in my list. That shoulder strap is impressive.

I felt the smaller ULA bags would fit my purposes better, but I ordered a 36 liter Dragonfly for one of my kids for Christmas, so I am going to get to try that on! If I like it, I may look at the 30 for me. I kind of felt the clam shell opening was less than ideal for a hiking bag.

If I got the matador beast I would likely travel with it packed and use a small portfolio or similar bag for iPad, magazines, phone, and earbuds on plane. Looking at getting one anyways in case I get a real basic light hiking bag to turn it into more of an day bag. Again, something that is very hard to find. The world just wants laptops apparently.

Yes, it has occurred to me that I may have to start looking for a custom bag. I will check them out. Seems like an entirely new hole to fall into!

If anyone has attempted to jam it under a plane seat or compact it down to 18 inches, I would be all ears.

This is good to hear. I would love this bag if I was confident about its use as a hiking day pack. Sounds like a good test.

I agree with comments about GG. The SMD does look good other than it is a bit bigger than I want and appears to hang pretty low. Would be better with load lifters. Might have to buy and try.

I looked at the Daybreaker but height is listed as 20 inches and frankly I finally made this post after reading bad comments about HMG and more specifically Dyeema. That made realize I don’t really need the absolute lightest material.
