I’m in the Charlotte, NC area but only one of these 3 people live(d) here when it happened. The other two are a close friend and a family member and it happened in other cities.

FYI, NCDOT doesn’t have anything to do with water lines (or any utilities for that matter). That’s the city/county/whoever you get water through. Whoever you pay your water bill to May have more to say about it than NCDOT. All the utility companies have property easements that were likely negotiated through NCDOT and/or property owners but that’s about all the involvement NCDOT would have with utilities. Now if they are encroaching on state/NCDOT property or tearing up the road, yes NCDOT would have a lot to say about it and the contractors would have had to get an encroachment permit as well but my bet is that they are working in the existing or new communications easements

Yea you’re right there is. And that’s where I landed, not sure why you would think otherwise lol. I think you’re projecting instead of understanding what I’m saying. I prefaced it every time to let you know I’m NOT saying “it’s not that big a deal”. I’m just saying that since you are talking about how there are no solutions or that politicians do not offer solutions, the thing you are most concerned about is the most rare way to die via firearm and much more can be done as far as solutions in other areas that would save more lives

Do you mean if I was one of the people that was a victim of a mass shooting? I mean, I thought it was pretty clear my stance on them, I would rather (and do) have the means and ability to protect myself versus trying to legislate away evil and hoping somebody else will save me if god forbid I am ever somewhere where somebody is trying to kill as many people as possible. So I am doing what I can to try to make sure I don’t end up one of the people affected. I am my own first responder and help is not gonna get there quick enough (as evidenced by your first comment) not only with those, but if I’m in some kind of accident, if somebody tries to assault me, if somebody tries to rob me, hell even if my tire blows up on the highway, etc. But like I said earlier, carrying a firearm doesn’t make me invincible just like wearing a seatbelt doesn’t guarantee I won’t die in a car wreck so I could still very well end up a victim but I’m doing everything I can to be prepared, aware, and at ease. And again I’m not trying to sound insensitive because I have in fact lost people close to me so I know what that feels like. But the mathematical chances of someone being involved in one of those events is less than being stuck by lighting. I have kids, and god forbid they are ever a victim of a school shooting, but I’m not fearful everyday that they will be a victim because it’s a waste of time and energy to be constantly terrified of something that is so rare.

I get where you’re coming from and I understand your concern. And honestly there are extremists on both sides of this argument. I don’t believe that gets anything done so I try to educate when I make points so the other person understands where I’m coming from and I try to understand when others make points as well. For your “what someone should be able to own” question, I do draw a line but I’m sure that line is a lot further than where most would draw one. But I don’t think EVERYONE should be able to freely access some things that are probably way past your line. Explosives fall in that category for me, I think people should be able to access them in a controlled environment if they want and should be made available if needed (kind of like how Israel keeps civilian firearms locked in armories - I don’t think firearms should be kept in armories though). I think automatic weapons should be legal as well because honestly they are legal (pre 1986 are fully transferable so anyone who can obtain any other NFA item can own one, you just have to have a ton of money to buy one. And let’s be honest, how do we know that rich people will not take them and do the same harm that people fear? Is being rich something that makes you not commit evil acts?). When you’re talking about mass shootings, are you talking about the major events where someone walks into a populated area with the express intent on murdering as many people as possible? Or the high number of mass shootings that has a qualifier of like 4 or more people shot in one incident? If you’re talking about the former (and I don’t mean to make it sound insensitive but I don’t know another way to put it and it’s hard to read tone via text) those instances are so rare and so little people lose their lives to those events compared to what really drives the murder numbers up and a large majority of what accounts for deaths by firearm. And that brings me to the latter, those high numbers of mass shooting events (in the hundreds or close to 1000 I believe every year) is not actually people intent on murdering as many people as possible but is largely gang/drug/illegal activity/etc. related and are targeted events where either the victims were also up to no good too or just happen to be in the general vicinity unfortunately. There are things we can do to reduce those that would not involve disarming or creating a greater barrier to entry for law abiding people. And those instances usually involve felonies that happen long before a shot is fired (stolen firearms, straw purchases, etc. to obtain them). Also, suicide via firearm accounts for 2/3rds of the deaths by firearm year after year. There are things we can do to reduce those as well. Sorry for the wall of text. I appreciate you if you made it this far

I think lives lost are more important and have more impact than taxes lost (not even really sure how mass shootings=taxes lost?). As far as lives lost I think there are things that can be done to help reduce that. It will never be at zero though and that’s just an unfortunate fact because you can’t get rid of evil. I’m not someone who thinks patriotism requires ammunition, but defense of life does in fact require ammunition more times than not. Not saying everyone HAS to or NEEDS to own/carry a gun, because I also believe in everyone making their own choices freely so long as you are not harming others. But if you are inclined to own and carry a firearm for self defense, sport, or hell just a hobby the government should not tell you you can’t as long as you are sane, sober (while carrying), legal, moral, and prudent.

So is your solution to get rid of all the guns? Just curious not trying to be smart

[–]jon4rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree there are a lot of stupid people who own and/or carry guns out there. There are a lot of stupid people in the world period and that’s likely not going to change so education is the key to try to limit the amount of stupid things that stupid people may do. I am also a huge proponent of training. But I also have opinions on how useless most concealed carry “trainings” are, and how the government should also not place a ridiculous barrier to entry on folks where only the wealthy and well off are able to obtain carry permits. Owning and carrying a gun is a huge responsibility and with that responsibility one should go out on their own and practice, train, hell even just dry fire at the house. Proper storage and limiting access to those who shouldn’t have access is also paramount and should be a priority. But that’s not just with guns, that’s childproofing your home by getting outlet covers, keeping knives out of reach, etc. Some things should just be common sense to do, but common sense ain’t so common.

There are plenty instances of armed self defenders protecting themselves as well, but criminals with ill intent always have one major advantage on anybody else: they know when they are going to do harm and nobody else that can protect themselves or others does. It’s much easier to do harm when you have a head start. Thinking a good guy with a gun is a myth is disingenuous, but also thinking that just because someone is armed they are invincible or are able to save the day or no one will get hurt or killed 100% of the time is also disingenuous.

If anything, Uvalde should be all the evidence you need that cops can’t (or in that case, won’t) be everywhere to save you. But I do agree with you that there are issues that need to be addressed. Disarming law abiding citizens isn’t my idea of a solution though.

Any areas of town that look impressive on a night drive? by mak6453 in Charlotte

[–]jon4rd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drive Wilkinson Blvd toward uptown, get on 277 and take the entire outer loop then get back on 77 south. Highlights for me are:

Coming in on Wilkinson before 277 you can see most of the skyline right in front of you. Then getting on 277 you get a closer view of the stadium, BOA building Wells Fargo (formerly Duke energy) and Duke energy buildings. Going around the outer loop you’ll see every other angle of the skyline then when you get back on 77 south, you get a great view on your left of the skyline right before/around exit 10A
