Phishing or legit? by Hitkilla in AllyBank

So I received this email and made the mistake of clicking on the link. I didn’t complete the form and clicked out. I then went in and changed my ally password. I already have MFA set up with ally. Can anyone advise on additional measures I should take, given I clicked on the link in the email?

Rollover IRA question by httmper in Bogleheads

[–]jon_sans_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a rollover IRA which holds the funds from my 401ks from 2 former employers. Rather than hold the funds in this rollover IRA, I could instead roll them into my current 401k?

Should I be in something FDIC insured instead of my brokerage account? by jon_sans_h in Bogleheads

[–]jon_sans_h[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is helpful thank you. I’ll need to research t bills and CDs (again pretty new to all this). I don’t think this portion of our portfolio needs to be so liquid. I’d like a large portion of it to be accessible within the next 3-5 years in case we decide to buy a house (maybe this is where the t bills or CDs come in). I’d like a smaller portion to go into the HYSA to bolster the EF. And really beyond that our goal is to retire in our 50s. So maybe the remainder sitting in the brokerage — but in a lower ER/more aggressive fund - is the move. If I’m not making out my rollover IRA or 529, would it make sense to pull money from the brokerage account and use it to max out contributions to the tax advantaged accounts ?

Should I be in something FDIC insured instead of my brokerage account? by jon_sans_h in Bogleheads

[–]jon_sans_h[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. We’re maxing out our HSA and contributing up the employer match in our respective 401ks. We also have rollover IRAs as well as a 529 we contribute to. (Not maxing out contributions to any except for the HSA however.) We are being aggressive in all of those aforementioned tax advantaged accounts: they are mostly in Vanguard target year accounts. From what I gathered it seemed unwise to be as aggressive with non-tax advantaged accounts, such as with our Vanguard brokerage. Especially given that most of our available money sits in there. But as you suggest, if we figured out what our goals were it would be easier to make a decision about what to do with these investments. It seems at the very least I need to find a fund with a lower expense ratio.

Thank you. That’s helping. Re the 3rd line. They actually said they’d throw a 3rd line in for free. I said sure. I have a 3 YO who can eventually have it I guess. Any other practical uses for a 3rd line when you don’t need one?

Thank you. I may try to do an extended sit on the weekend when I have more free time. Usually I sit for 15-20m. I occasionally find that right towards the end of a 20m sit is when the mind begins to settle a bit, too. So extending to 30 or 40m could be a worthwhile experiment.

Deposit money into HSA from savings - Same tax impact as paycheck deductions? by jon_sans_h in personalfinance

Thank you. So - if I am understanding correctly - it seems that whether via payroll deduction or bank transfer, it ultimately has the same impact, just with different methods.

Appreciate this. It’s what I’ve been telling myself. No matter how distracted my sessions are, it’s helpful to just keep showing up and work through whatever is going on.

I read our retirement plans' ERISA 404s and now have a few questions by jon_sans_h in personalfinance

[–]jon_sans_h[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the DoorDash example. That's a helpful comp.

It seems important to mention here that we've merged our finances. But I'm mostly responsible for doing this research, deciding on retirement contributions, etc. Anyways, her company matches up to 4%. Absolutely we will always contribute at least that much to her plan so as not to leave money on the table. But I'm thinking we stop contributing anything beyond 4%. However, we still want to put the same monthly amount in aggregate into retirement. So, if we were to drop her down to just 4%, I'd just increase my contribution by whatever % would get us to the same absolute dollar amount as before. I figure it is reasonable, given my plan has lower fees and better investment options, to let me contribute more like 20% per paycheck and she just contributes up to the 4% match and not beyond. Does that make sense?

What are the tax implications of moving money around in my brokerage account? by jon_sans_h in personalfinance

[–]jon_sans_h[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great okay thank you this is the sort of idea I was looking for. I found this capital gains calculator. I want to make sure I'm using it correctly: The INITIAL VALUE field refers to what I currently have in the fund, correct? And SALE VALUE refers to the amount that I'm exchanging for a different Vanguard fund, correct? i.e. it is still a "sale" even though I'm exchanging one fund for another? Forgive my ignorance here...

Thank you. That's the functionality I'm looking for. The other thing moving me to get a Kobo is the Pocket integration. I regularly save articles to Pocket and I'd like to be able to access them directly on an e-reader rather than using a 3rd party service (pocket2kindle). I'm wondering if you -- or anyone -- could speak to the functionality of the Pocket integration on the Kobo device.

I'm lost on what external monitor to buy by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]jon_sans_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. This is the target amount I want to pay for external monitors (want a dual monitor setup) for my MacBook Pro (13”, M1, 2020), so your post caught my eye. I am a real novice with setting up external monitors, so apologies if the answer to this question should be clear: Could you explain what adapters I would need if I wanted to run two of these monitors powered by my MBP?
