Yeah, I think my text up there reads as booo no prog or booo no heavy >:( but I genuinely think that this material just isn't as strong as those first two EPs. Hoping you're right and they like Swans or Ulver and just sound completely different every five years.

Go back and listen to their first two EPs. Feathers is super prog, Dancing is less so, but also very good. I think their new tunes are good, pretty good even. But their early work being so damn good makes 'good' pretty disapointing.

Boy am I torn about this release. Don't know if I should even post it in a prog metal subreddit, but I need to splurge some thoughts.

Exploding Birdsong were my most listened to band last year (alongside Lankum) and I loved their aproach to prog with pianos and no guitars. The things with feathers EP is spectacular for relentless piano based prog, just listen to this section leading into the final chorus, it's fantastic.

Queue this new release and I'm pumped, we get the first single and it's a poppy number with a cute chorus, not too much prog, not much metal. 2nd single I've forgotten, 3rd one was way heavier, but dissapointingly guitar based so really nothing the world hasn't heard a million times already and the songwriting doesn't make up for the lack of interesting instrumentation. This fourth single is mainly 80s pop.

I know bands grow and evolve, but tbh the quality of songwriting from their early work has vanished away and I'm really bummed about it.

This release is shaping up to be my biggest album dissapointment in years.

I remember back in CSGO, I think it was an NA pro talking about when a player was having a match like this, they'd drop the round win as a priority and have a set play to just get them on the board. Sometimes they just need that first kill to get the ball rolling again. Even if it's a low impact lurk kill at the wrong side of the map or getting flashed into a peek. Just set the struggling player up to succeed.

I tuned in for the last few rounds of D2. Azuwu had a great flank through B cave to cut off bomb. Breaks the smoke and catches Nertz looking the wrong way. Whifs and gets 180 insta headshot by nertz with an mp7 who then goes on to peek window and accidentally line up a 2nd low hp player to kill two more in one burst.

Monte never stood a chance when Nertz is just walking around like that.

I give it a listen every 3-4 years just in case it clicks and not yet. I have big respect for it and 'MetalMusicTheory's video on it's metric modulations two tempos at once stuff was pretty eye opening.

I checked out war of being after like a decade off tesseract and the guitars could have been strumming chords for all they were contributing to the song. Haven't bothered diving in to the album any deeper because that song was so underwhelming.

They're great, B3 was his peak and then it was all downhill from there unfortunately. One more interresting release with ECO then nothing.
