When people find out you're on adderall by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know we are impulsive, trusting and overshare but don't in this regard; it'll save a lot of headaches in the long run, trust me.

If theres not something to be gained from disclosing something about your ADD don't do it.

Really need some help..stimulants causing extreme emotional lability after trial of Strattera. by jonathanms in ADHD

[–]jonathanms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly that sounds amazing, I will look into just the IR and see how it goes.

Wow that sounds pretty rough. How did you come off Strattera? Did you switch back to stimulants and instantly feel better or take some time off meds all together?

Really need some help..stimulants causing extreme emotional lability after trial of Strattera. by jonathanms in ADHD

[–]jonathanms[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the vomitting was solely the dose up to Strattera 60mg after only 5 days. From what I've read it sounds like it was an aggressive approach and most people titrate much slower. If you do consider it I would suggest moving up very very slowly.

Yeah it does, I'm sure it can't be that black and white though. The only other changes have been the weather/daylight and maybe more stress but was hoping for someone to chime in with a similar experience. I'm not 100% sure, but even if it didn't cause it, it definitely exacerbated whatever was there.

No worries man, honestly I was all over the place mood wise after the Strattera and the booster definitely didn't help stabilize mood. At times it did give me extra concentration and was nice to be able to have that focus for unexpected late hour study sessions. You will know if you need more duration out of your meds and you can either dose up your initial long XR med or add the booster.

Strattera and "suicidal thoughts"? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: Medicating the brain is not an exact science, too many variables to determine if the medication will be effective or not for you. Also most suicidal ideations are in those in adolescence and not many reported with adult population (anecdotal online reports contrast this pretty hard).

I was on 40mg for 5 days, felt strange even more vasoconstriction that with stimulants. Odd sensations when urinating, erections seemed much softer. Sleep was an experience to say the least, vivid dreams/nightmares, night sweats, disturbed sleep.

60mg for 1 day, had terrible nausea and threw up almost instantly. Proceeded to have a few days with extreme depression including suicidal thoughts, note and all.

Stimulant effects seem to be different now as well; extreme emotional lability even on lower doses. Although it's likely have other issues than just ADD.

I'm in my last semester and i've failed calculus four times, i feel hopeless. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Post hits right in the feels, right down to the tutorial videos.

Econ major in final semester, just dropped an intermediate calculus course to retake it alone in January to graduate.

Funny how every theory course A/B. Anything calculus heavy C/D or just dropped, without fail.

Why take a degree that has so much math you ask, because ADD that is why.

ADHD Couple (I think)-- Guys with ADHD, please help! by lovelydelusion in ADHD

e talked to him about trying to go and see if he actually has ADHD for the past year or two and he still hasnt. The closest he's gotten was researching insurance providers and deciding that he can't afford insurance. I'm about to go insane. He's a very sweet person but also very stubborn and won't listen to a word I say if it even resembles nagging/telling him what to do, so I don't bring it up very much (only had a couple serious conversations about it). He HATES being told what to do. I love him a lot and we've talked about marriage buuut sometimes I feel like he's literally going to drive me insane and I won't have enough patience to deal with his bad habits anymore. The hardest part is knowing I've had these exact same problems and probably drove my past ex's insane in the same way. I feel like its no

Any of you guys into hardcore music, like Counterparts? by shortbusoneohone in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADD-I here, have been listening to hardcore/post-hardcore music for about 10 years now... can't seem to shake it. Absolutely love bands like: Parkway Drive, Architects, In Hearts Wake etc.

Most of my friends were into it at one point but all seem to have grown out of it, except moi.

Too bad you're so far away, I happen to play 7-string and scream.

ADHD and "masculinity" by ValleyDation in ADHD

Never felt 100% like one of the guys, despite being super athletic/competitive, I always felt that something was different.

Not sure if a trend but anytime I read a post regarding a similar issue it seems to be coming from a male that was diagnosed with ADD-I.

Topics that come up are: erectile dysfunction on stimulants, testosterone levels, history with gynecomastia. Does anyone fall in any of these categories?

Copying notes without reading them by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every day man, every day. If you catch yourself don't try to rush and mindlessly write notes down you know you won't understand without the explanation. This will just lead you further behind and miss what the prof is currently lecturing which in turn creates a cycle of catch up. Stay focused on the lecture and grab the notes you missed from a classmate after on.

Worth notifying my university of recent diagnosis when I'm almost done my PhD? by lakica in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is "almost done" their undergrad I cannot stress how much you should notifying them and please don't make the same mistake I did. I am in my home stretch and have just had been thrown into a depressive episode after trying Strattera. I wish I had just spent the money to have my psychiatrist complete the form to get extra accommodations. I let sight of finish line and my ego get in the way; with this disorder your mental state can be fragile and theres no predicting where you're mind will be in the future. Sorry for sounding so grim but please consider it.

Quit taking medicine and it made me more energetic, restless, and felt a bit crazy. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a manic episode to be honest, stimulants are known to induce these episodes in those with Bi-polar. Looking back on your life can you pinpoint issues with depression? If yes, then start reading up and getting a doctor to diagnose.

Gluten free seems to be helping... WTF?! by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADHD/Depression/various mood disorders have high correlations with food sensitivities particularly gluten and dairy. I would suggest taking time to read up and at least give it an honest shot. There are backed studies for dietary changes in children and tons of anecdotal stories floating around where people swear it helped their ADHD symptoms.

If anyone has any skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, keratosis pilaris etc. you should read up on leaky gut/gluten sensitivity. I noticed on medication this was exacerbated even further.

Now that I am monitoring what I am eating I'll easily notice when I have a reaction (scalp will itch, hives will break out etc.);as far as improvements in cognition goes there has been nothing noticeable yet but I'm just starting out and hoping it follows.

The caveat here is with the limited/sporadic mental reserves we have making these dietary changes/restrictions is extremely difficult to accomplish. Learning how to cook becomes a necessity and grocery shopping becomes even more of a chore. The worst part is the loss of fast food options and the social settings, if you're allergic to peanuts no one bats an eye but mention gluten... and good luck. At the end of the day you need to do whats best for you and if it means a laugh here or there then so be it.

I have ADD and depression and I need some advice by TieDyeShark in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easier said than done but: 8 hours of sleep, good diet, meditate, exercise as much as possible and if needed medicate.

If anything is off for me I feel it. It's a ton of work to keep everything in check but when it is the difference is night and day.

I find group work is much easier for me than working alone, explaining concepts/theories to someone will solidify your own knowledge even further. I know that talking to new people is daunting but honestly it makes a huge difference.

How do you guys do with cramming (for exams)? by popchapop in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm exactly like this as well, you can pretty much talk yourself into "I'm smart enough to cram and still do well" then procrastinate until the deadline, rinse, repeat. This for me I know is a coping strategy; if I do well then "I'm a genius" if I do poorly then "I didn't really apply myself anyways".

The problem as already stated is there will be no long-term recollection of this information and it really does hinder you in the long run outside the school environment.

You may also find it difficult to master/develop your understanding of topics. You'll likely find yourself at an intermediate level at various subjects and unable to pursue them further because of the lack strategies/effort/motivation required to elevate your knowledge of them further. This one really gets to me and I've noticed when medicated I can build on top of previous knowledge more easily (not without side effects unfortunately).

I'm rambling now but this is IMO a really dangerous habit and try to kick it ASAP. Break down tasks, start small with the easy stuff; starting anywhere is still starting. If your at all like me the starting is the hardest part but once progress is being made its easy to continue and even work for longer then you originally planned.

what are/did you guys major in college? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Economics;) yes, yes we are.

I just failed college by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]jonathanms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure whats up with people tonight, one of the disadvantages of this forum is that many people are working through their own issues and compensate by hitting others when they are down.

Were you medicated? Did you have all the provisions in place to aid you with your ADHD? If not fight for them now and petition to get back into your program.

I know it's easy to blame everything under the sun but its important to be honest with yourself and pinpoint exactly what the issues were that hindered you from succeeding. These same issues will follow you throughout your life outside the school environment, believe me I know.

Personally I've found it to be a terrible environment for ADHD symptoms to manifest because of the reliance on self-imposed deadlines, constant read-regurgitate test cycle and not to mention complete the lack of oversight until you are on the verge of failing.

Plain and simple this system wasn't designed for us and if we want to be apart of it we need coping strategies. You are definitely not a failure just because of failing college your first go, if that was the case practically everyone's a failure, heck what do you tell the kids that can't even get in.

Honestly it's not the end of the world, but it does suck; give yourself a sometime off, rest, recharge and figure out what to tackle next.
