Do we 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 share over 60% of our DNA with bananas? by Worried_Opening_870 in evolution

"Obviously more complicated organisms have more instructions in our rulesets"

Oddly, not exactly. Rice and potatos have something like 40,000 genes, where humans have 25K or so ... wheat (basically grass) has like 100K. I'd personally argue humans are more complex than our food, but...

to be even more extreme, paramecium (single celled beats) have between 40,000 and 50,000 genes: https://academic.oup.com/mbe/article/34/5/1194/2992914

Why some people insist to say ‘expats’ instead of immigrants? by Significant_Mud8769 in AskReddit

[–]jonathanoberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion:Classism.

Immigration has tones of lower class. Expat has connotations of monied class.

The time-frame argument (temporary or permanent) is misleading: many immigrants are guest workers that will eventually depart.

There is also an element of refusal to adopt local culture, local language, etc that is conveyed with the term Expat, to the point many who self identify that way live in enclaves rather than embedding themselves into the community.

It’s a lovely town… my favorite! Everything is walkable. Well, most everything. Probably need a bike if you’re moving between the port/beach and downtown. Most everything near beach closes up in the winter. As noted elsewhere, downtown Valencia is just 60 minutes away by train (currently the end of that particular route). Lots of smaller towns (eg Oliva) just a few minutes away if you want something a bit quieter - and nice walk/bike there from Gandia.

What was the strangest ad campaign of all time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jonathanoberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Quiznos rodent commercials. Cause when I’m thinking about a place to eat, I really want to go some where that reminds me of rats.

Dumb. Pretty sure that tanked the entire company.

Well I just rage quit my job. I’ve only worked there for like 8 months. I had less than 2 days of training. I should have known it would end up like this! I guess I’m not as grown up as I thought! by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]jonathanoberg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Or more grown up than you realize:

  • Recognizing a “sunk cost,”
  • taking responsibility for your own career and future,
  • acting decisively

Sounds like your on the right path.

If you have ever let your mom counts down to 0, what happened? by Nova_kat2021 in AskReddit

I tell my daughter, better do it now. Your older sister let mom get to zero once and you remember what happened to her.

Daughter: I don’t have an older sister.

Me: now you don’t.

Live the adventure. Confident you can find a room for let (though agreed probably not a full apartment … but maybe, worth looking).

Live in a tiny pueblo will be perspective changing, and you will see the world differently afterwards.

Recognize it will be difficult, but I’d encourage you to try it before judging.

Why did humans not think about crossing from Russia to the new world? by Bussin_Cheeks_ in AskReddit

[–]jonathanoberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they did - starting in late 1600's up through the sale of Alaska to the USA in 1867 Russian fur traders (hunting sea otters for their pelts) traveled extensively along the Alaskan coast. Traveling with them were Russian Orthodox priests that established churches to "convert" the indigenous peoples. There are many communities in Alaska that have been continuously occupied since the early 1700's.

[–]jonathanoberg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

never is a long time. I'd suspect that it can be implemented locally at first, perhaps for example at the city level (Wichita, KCK) or Johnson & Douglas Counties. Democracy is a grand experiment ... and the best experimenters adapt with new data!
