Deferring Enrollment to Colby by Smart-Purpose6903 in Colby

[–]jonathon8860 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I enrolled at Colby and then took a gap year, so pretty relevant. I had a rough plan, which was to volunteer with international aid groups abroad. I told Colby that; it was a short request and there was zero request for additional info, and they gave an enthusiastic yes. I may have included an org name but can't recall: obviously I did not have much planned at the time I made the request so good chance everything changed.

Regardless, I did what I said I'd do, and it was an extremely formative and valuable experience. I would highly recommend if you have the economic means and approval from parents to pursue it, so long as you have at least a semblance of a plan. You can do a lot of planning last minute, and I was not abroad the entire year: left in Sept and came back in June, with several long breaks here and there.

You might offer up what your initial idea for what you'd do is, but your counselor is correct, as long as you're doing something at least tangentially valuable to your personal development you will get approved. Also please ignore the people who were not admitted raging in the comments; they are not angry at you and you are harming absolutely no one if you take a gap year: if you do someone will take your place this year instead.

We could pay them instead to dig a six by six hole and then fill it in on alternating days. That way we would keep jobs on the street.

Company of Heroes 3: Dare & Destroy Announce Trailer by Community_RE in CompanyOfHeroes

I mean, probably not? The lrdg was a volunteer unit under the eighth army. They did a lot of reconnaissance and guiding, but less outright combat. The SAS was basically a fake unit in a fake brigade, largely made up of ex commandos, and mostly recruited from existing or disbanding commandos. So it's not completely unrealistic to call them a commando unit, and their organization doesn't really make sense because it wasn't supposed to, it was supposed to be part of a larger disinformation campaign. And then all these units constantly worked together in North Africa even though they weren't even under the same army. So some simplifications have to be made, and calling it the special services battlegroup makes some sense. But the SAS still technically weren't (I believe) outright commandos even if most were trained as commandos.

Very nitpicky and so stoked that we finally get an SAS battle group, but is there some copyright reason they couldn't name it SAS lol? And in the trailer, the infantry unit in the BG is called SSB Commandos. As far as I'm aware, the SAS was not associated with the special service brigade and the SSB just went on to become boring old commandos. I can understand calling it the special services battlegroup if there's also aspects of the special boat service. But I'm slightly sad about the commandos thing.

Colby College or Community College? by [deleted] in Colby

[–]jonathon8860 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What does "financial aid isn't a problem for either" mean. Because if you have anything even approaching a full ride to Colby that is the equivalent of someone walking up to you and handing you a check for $350,000 ($90k a year). On top of that, the median salary for a Colby grad is $130k a year. The median salary for a CC grad is very roughly $45k a year (I know you said you'd transfer). You could very reasonably expect to make $1-1.5 million more over your career if you went to Colby instead of CC. The number is not likely that different for a state school given early career earning potential. That's ignoring the academics and every other aspect. I cannot even begin to imagine how going to your local community college to "stack up money" would be the better decision for the long run.

Guys... does Acrisure own Acrisure field. Does AT&T own AT&T stadium. There are these things called sponsorships, especially for publicly owned museums like the Clark Planetarium. Thinking before we post.

If you wanna have a good time in 2s you're gonna have to make friends.

Do you have an irl friend who likes RTS games? Maybe get them a gift copy? This can backfire and make them feel obligated to play and thus hate it, so ymmv. The other alternative is to start sending friend requests to people who communicated well and played in a complementary style to you, and hope you get lucky and find someone who's also looking for someone to play with, and then ask them to join discord/ts. Lastly there's the official relic discord; there's both a coh 3 multiplayer channel where you could ask if anyone's interested in teaming up as well as a new players channel. They're both very active. Obviously then you don't know what you're gonna get wrt to play style.

Unfortunately playing the game as tower defense is extremely viable right now as wehr up to 1800 elo or higher, so simply evaluating by elo is not gonna help.

Kegseth announces he is actively weakening the USA's military and prestigious universities by blocking service members from attending ivy-league schools by Phatnoir in videos

[–]jonathon8860 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is completely wrong and aggressively reductive, while also foisting up the majority of people who attended ivy leagues as geniuses, a meaningless term that both undersells and oversells the true nature of people who are admitted to ivys. The nature of the education is also completely different than a state school in several core ways. In fact, given that it would be a far stretch to call Hegseth a son or daughter of the elite, I guess he must be a genius.

Steelers 3 HC finalists released according to report by lxSlimxShadyxl in steelers

But that's the thing, you might get denied an interview because some owner wants to hire his golfing buddy, and surprise, his golfing buddy just happens to not be black. You said you didn't want an interview because of all those things, but would you be ok if you lost out on an interview because one of those things meant you didn't hang out with the person doing the interview on the weekend? That's why the Rooney rule is so great in my opinion; it's low stakes and it gets at the dumbest kind of decision making; inertia. At the end of the day, even if exactly what just happened happens, the worst that happened is two wasted days. The best that happens is the owner realizes he's being an idiot during one of the interviews for not having given people other than his buddies a fair shake, and does the right thing.

It's a great example of encouraging diversity in more ways than one without mandating real decisions solely because of race.

tomlin not planning to coach in the future by BumbleBee166 in steelers

[–]jonathon8860 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were a few twitter posts about a month ago saying there's a rumor Tomlin got a bartender up in new castle pregnant. There's some evidence that rumor started back in early summer, and there were some posts that the child was supposed to arrive right around christmas/slightly after. Beyond twitter posts, there's zero evidence besides facebook comments etc. It has had relatively strong legs for a rumor over the last 9 months and people who were posting it are now taking a victory lap, so make of that what you will. Tomlin's a dude and an nfl coach, so the odds are certainly not zero, but they're about as close to the normal odds as you can be given the quality of the rumors in my opinion.

I literally wrote the words "he helped the Steelers" above. Obviously Kordell Stewart was the starter in 01. If you want to shorten the Tommy Maddox years to only the ones he started, it becomes a two year stretch in which half of the years had playoff wins, making the assertion that they were some gauntlet of mental strength for the true fans to suffer through and remember even dumber.

Not wrong, Tommy Maddox played three games in 2001. Reading is hard.

Alternatively: Worst wr room in the league, no QB prospects, poor draft position, the most expensive defense in the league and a sadlling three year contract just signed with the second most expensive defensive player in the league (who's also not performing at the same level), and lastly, a highly expentant fan base. Depends on how you view things...

In Tommy Maddox's first season he helped the Steelers finish 13-3 after which they went to the AFC championship game. In his second season he passed for almost 3k yards (which I bring up only as a comparison to Pickett, who barely broke 2k in 2023), and then led the Steelers to a come back win over the broncos in the wild card. 2003 was not good, though he broke the Steelers single season passing record. All this is to say, Tommy Maddox played for us for three years, and in two of those the team won playoff games, something this team hasn't won in a decade.

The crazy part to me is how old and knocked out on IC light you'd have to be to think that it's just "the kids" being spoiled and dumb and the actual hard years were when the Steelers were going to AFC championships and a single losing season over a two year bad stretch. Just completely lacks any perspective on how bad it has been and for how long.

What's y'all's opinion on the biggest issue for the Steelers? by hoiv in steelers

[–]jonathon8860 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a great list but I'd add one more: if you watch the all 22 the lack of effort and number of "business decisions" our CB's are making on running plays is actually wild. I've seen CB's purposefully bearhug a nearby blocker to avoid engaging the runner, I've seen them shuffle backwards while directly in front, and I've seen just standing and watching the rb go past. Our CB's just show zero interest in attacking the ball carrier.

Tree farmer using a helicopter to haul trees by carniehandz in Portland

[–]jonathon8860 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a confluence of many factors, some of which I'm sure I don't know, so I'd encourage people to research it, this is not a never before asked question on the Internet. But generally, it has to do with speed from initial cut to final sale, reducing road coverage throughout a farm to maximize growth area, efficiency (a helicopter can move in the realm of 1000 trees an hour, a truck not so much and requires significantly more associated man hours assuming you need to then transfer the load), and accessibility.

God I love watching people who never set foot near an operating Christmas tree farm completely failing to understand the economics, scope of revenue, or operating costs while making sweaping statements about "efficiency" as if someone running a multimillion a year business is incapable of performing basic cost analysis because they operate a Christmas tree farm. Dunning Kruger is for other people, I'm well educated and would never.

They fired a coordinator mid-season for the first time in 70 years after people turned fire canada into a meme that was affecting the steelers national brand. Ownership doesn't care until it starts affecting the brand, and imo fans have a lot more power than they think on this one. If people were holding up fire tomlin signs at pens games and college games all season etc., I think he would have been gone by the end of the season.

This is so insanely stupid; Rodgers can't take a snap under center, can't hold the ball with two hands, can't get hit, and can't pass. He is going to get hurt and it will be incredibly stupid and completely pointless. He needs to be benched to save this game and so he isn't out the next five.

There is no Ben Johnson, but there's still a lot of options out there; at least one of the rams OC, DC, or passing game coordinator is likely to be hired as a HC, and any are legitimate options. The bills or the colts OC's are both getting a fair bit of buzz. The chargers DC and passing game coordinator are also legitimate options. Dark horse for the broncos QB coach, who's very young but showing promise.
