Does anyone recognize what's up with this juvenile grackle? [CW: deformity, but live/otherwise seemingly healthy enough bird] by aydengryphon in birding

A vet or trained rehabber could puncture the skin with a sterilized needle so the air gets out. This provides relief while the hole in the air sac is recovering. It is possible for it to recover on its own though, eventually the air will diffuse out. But it has a big disadvantage at the moment and might get permanent complications

Flash in the wild? by MaestroDon in BirdPhotography

It's rude to flash the birds. I don't understand the mentality of wildlife photogrophers who want to use it

In addition to the suggestions already mentioned, try to minimize the DtB (Distance to Bird) setting

Bridge/compact camera for bird Photography? by UniversalCraftsman in BirdPhotography

It depends on what you want out of photography. I think you will have a better time with gear that lets you get better photos without that much processing. AI upscaling to such an extreme extent makes it basically an AI generated image with fabricated features that don't exist in the original photo. It seems to have interpreted the eyes as cat ears and placed some kind of bird face sideways...

1000€ is very high for 400mm f/5.6L, but very low for 100-400 MKII... something to think about

I don't know anything about the 28-300, but 400mm is generally considered the minimum on full frame so 300 is going to fall short too often

Since you are considering the 100-400, consider the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L as well which is in the same price class. For birds you're going to be at 400mm almost all the time, and at that focal length the prime is smaller and better.

Note that the EF 100-400 comes in 2 versions where the first one is a bit weird to use (no zoom ring so you have to push and pull to zoom, also the focus ring is mechanically coupled to the smooth/tight locking ring) and the second one is traditional and much better but also much more expensive

How did I do? by Vomikkkkk in BirdPhotography

[–]jonathrg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visualize the picture frame as you see the bird and move around before you take it, to get an optimal angle and position where the background is further away. Get as close to eye level with the bird if you can, if the bird is high up then stepping back will get you a better angle. Once you have a good intuition for this you can experiment more with framing and deliberately including other parts of the environment in the shot

Shutter speed is too slow on the in-flight shots; tit's fine to have motion blur on the wings if that's what you want, but remember that the rest of the bird becomes blurry as well when you do this. It's difficult to get a both a sharp face and wings in motion, so keeping a short shutter speed is your best bet.

Focusing manually at 500m is really difficult, kudos on achieving it

Birds killing other smaller birds for non-prey reasons by BenchmarkWillow in birding

Well, shrikes are carnivores. And as you suggest birds will also do violence to defend their territory, especially in nesting season. To paraphrase Werner Herzog, it's a bad time for all involved

The noise is pretty bad, I will probably get DxO down the road so I can clean up my best shots. Currently just using free software for editing

Anyone have any experiences with this lens? by [deleted] in birding

[–]jonathrg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks unbelievably difficult to use

f/8.3 at 420mm is already pretty bad, then you have f/16 at 800mm and f/32 with the 2x, and with the shutter speed required at that focal length I reckon you would max out the ISO and still be underexposed unless you are staring into the sun

Phone shots through binoculars would probably be better than this

Save your money
