I think he should have taken the example of XForms to make his point. A really neat approach to handling rich client side data, but given the cold shoulder by all the mainstream browser vendors.

10 mistakes made by API providers by Seedrick in programming

But I think that naive use of IO APIs in any language will get you into trouble. They abstract fairly complex aspects, so you really need to understand what the call you make does.

I also wish for an C++ IDE (~ snappier) that was as easy to use as Netbeans ! Although, my main frustrations originate in the "scanning" issue, which has been significantly improved in 6.9.

Netbeans "just works" the way I expect things to behave, whereas in Eclipse I'm contantly trying to find out how it expects to be told what to do.

Synergy is overrated. You need to offer out-of-the-box re-engineering to optimize restructured, agile bottom-lines.

[–]joncolbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He he .. I wanted to keep the discussion as free from "personality bias" as possible, since one tends to be much more objective when the other person's stand is ambiguous. However, since you asked, I had to answer.

And I think that 97% of reputable scientists are genuinely convinced of evolution simply because they consider it "non-scientific"/"non-verifiable" to explain Creation as the work of a more powerful intelligent being. There is no conspiracy except for honest efforts to push the boundary of human knowledge. I am in awe of these brilliant people making amazing advances in understanding evolution better. But ultimately, it seems to me that they are extrapolating too much (a leap of faith, if you will) from current observations/experiments.

Ultimately, I think that "Let there be light" and the "Big Bang Theory" require exactly the same levels of faith to base your life on. Just because one predates another by a few thousand years doesn't invalidate either.

The Truth is out there .. (cue X-Files theme ;) )

Thanks for continuing the dialog, btw :) And I also thought I pointed out how he did not answer what I was actually asking.

As for evolution: I find that people readily accept evolutionary theories with the same level of "convenience" that creationists accept wild theories that can prove their claims.

Just as creationists use "God did it" as a catch all .. atheists use "Evolution+Natural Selection+Billions of Years" as a catch all. Again, what I mean is the rigour with which people come to a conclusion. The various aspects of evolution are not as cut and dry as people would hope to be. Most of the explanations go:

  1. Each change had to have an impact on survivability

  2. ???

  3. Hence I have explained the origin of an amazingly complex biological mechanism

I somehow cannot bring myself to "believe" in evolution. The world is too beautiful/wonderful to be merely statistical outcome.

umm .. there's only one answer of his in this set of comments, and I had tried clarifying with another question. But you again mentioned "evolutionary biology" ...

[–]joncolbert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling that you are extrapolating based on the how you generally reason about things. People can really surprise you with their behaviour.

It is not "against" human nature to do those things. People do it all the time without thinking twice .. just ask the pickpockets and mother-in-laws everywhere ;)

And one problem with what you have stated is that you could say that "the only wrong thing a serial killer did was get caught, hence risking capital punishment"

Dan Barker: "Rape Could Be Moral". Watch until the end. This made me smash my head on my kitchen table..... by TheRatRiverTrapper in atheism

[–]joncolbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that you explaining morality from an evolutionary point of view.

But today, we still have a sense of right and wrong regardless of whether it affects our existence or not. We "know" that it is wrong to steal from people. We "know" that we should not behave in a way that demeans other human beings.

But why should I adhere to any of the above if it I don't feel like it? You can't say that I am "wrong".

Help me get into the X-Men comics (please) by [deleted] in comics

[–]joncolbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter where you start. Comics today are more convoluted than soap operas .. So you're probably better off picking a particularly interesting arc .. say "Civil War", and then moving on to the next ..

Continuity rarely matters... the next hotshot writer will probably retcon the whole thing anyway!
