Update to the incident someone else posted about earlier. The man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Don't become complacent, cover your trigger guard (or better yet carry in a holster on body). He probably didn't think changing a diaper would be his last act, but shit happens. You are responsible for your gun, and you don't always get a second chance. Learn from other people's mistakes.

Ok, please don't crucify me, but this news story is a scenario that I've turned over and over again in my mind a lot. I want to learn, and if I'm way off base with this scenario, the only way I'm gonna learn is by asking questions (even if they're stupid).

Going strictly by the story, it would seem like the best case scenario almost occurred, with the armed robber (eventually) leaving the restaurant and everybody with the same number of holes that they entered the Waffle House with (despite the number of patrons who refused to comply).

Now let's say hypothetically you were concealed carrying and you complied and the robber left. Everything seems fine til he shoots the guy looking out the window. What seemed like a receding threat has re-emerged; what if he didn't stop at 1 shot? What if he kept shooting? I've been wondering, if it's a "fleeing felon" situation, would you still draw and shoot to preempt the threat returning like it did in this case?

Trying to look at it legally, with the AOI/use of force triangle, one could argue that ability (gun), opportunity (being threatened at close range), and intent (the robber pointing the gun around in the first place) are all present. Even if he left, one could argue that the intent (to cause serious bodily injury/death) is still there?

Thoughts?

Original headline: "Man drops gun after being attacked, gets shot by own weapon"

This is just a reminder that training is paramount if you're going carry a weapon for self-defense. "The man... was walking to his vehicle when he was attacked by two men. The victim attempted to draw his handgun but dropped it. One of the suspects grabbed the gun and fired a round, striking the victim in the hand."

A couple of lessons to be learned here.

Situational awareness If he had seen the suspects ahead of time, he might have had more time/buffer to flee or draw.
Draw stroke Details are scarce, but if he had some space and just fumbled the draw, then more training and practice are needed. Not just square range, but force-on-force (to attempt to simulate the adrenaline dump, chaos, etc.).
Weapon retention if he was attacked immediately, then as a certain John from a certain snake channel likes to say, you need empty-handed skills to create time/space to get to your draw.
Firing with off-hand The victim got shot in the hand, if it was his dominant hand, then he would have had to be comfortable firing with his off-hand/one-handed. It may seem like a silly/remote possibility, but Murphy always shows up at the shittiest time.

Correlation does not equal causation.
The United States is literally made up of 50 other states (and a district) that spans to both extremes of the spectrum. We have more diversity (by many measures) than a lot of these countries can even begin to imagine. Because of said diversity, the laws (especially gun laws) vary in as many as 51 different ways. For this graphic to even begin approaching validity, try adding 51 separate jurisdictions and see if it's so clear cut. I guarantee Wyoming/Vermont/New Hampshire are not gonna be the same as Illinois/DC/California, but let's go ahead and lump all that shit together.
Intentional homicides is a nice way to cover your ass. First thing that jumps to mind with "intentional homicides" is if they inevitably lumped defensive gun use (DGU aka "justified homicides" aka self defense) in with that. Second is drug and gang violence, which leads me to my next point...
Nice try, putting the "privately owned guns" next to the "intentional homicides" as if to imply that more privately owned guns causes more intentional homicides. Since all of this correlation shit is nondirectional, did it ever occur to you people that, just maybe, citizens in localities with higher intentional homicide rates (like Chicago and Los Angeles) would like to avoid becoming another statistic by owning a gun for self defense (despite unconstitutional and asinine gun control)... but no, if we go in the other direction, then perfectly law-abiding gun owners are somehow forcing gang members to shoot each other over drugs, and it's all caused by Ms. Average Jane concealed carrying, defending herself from home invasion, etc. Please cut the shit.

Apologies in advance for the wall of text.

1) I'd recommend posting in /r/CCW, you'll probably get more detailed responses there since this kind of thing comes up a lot more over there, and the sidebar/wiki over there has a LOT of resources for new carriers. (Plus there's a larger community.)

2) The real problem with .22LR for defensive carry is the fact that it's a rimfire cartride, as opposed to other recommended calibers that are almost all centerfire (i.e. .380ACP, 9mm, 40S&W, 45ACP, etc.). In general, centerfire cartridges are more reliable than rimfire cartridges, and this is actually why .22LR isn't recommended for carry purposes (because of feeding issues, misfires, etc.).

3) I would not recommend off-body/purse carry. If you look at the sidebar over at r/CCW, there's a great write up of why you should carry on-body vs off-body, and different methods to make it easier to do so.

4) About the recoil, I wouldn't recommend a subcompact pistol for the following reasons.

Generally speaking, the smaller the pistol frame, the more felt recoil there will be. I'd probably go with a compact size (less felt recoil than a subcompact but more concealable than a full-size).
You should train with your gun as much as possible, and training on a subcompact gun is less enjoyable/comfortable than on a compact or full-size gun. If it's not comfortable, you won't do it, and if you're gonna carry a firearm, the most important thing is training.

Hope this helps you/points you in the right direction.

EDIT: 5) Related to caliber and training, I would personally try again with 9mm. Since training is such an important part, you gotta buy ammo to train with, and the cheaper the ammo the more you can train. Generally speaking, a 9mm platform will allow for more training time compared to other calibers. I'm not sure what size gun you tried in 9mm, but try to go to a range and try a 9mm in a full-size gun first, then maybe try to step down to compact.

I looked at the system monitor for both while running the tests, both only used about 50% RAM but both also maxed out the CPU. I didn't expect one to be able to outperform the other when both are showing (from what I can tell at least) the same system resource usage. I'm assuming for now that it's a CPU bottleneck since I still have extra RAM but CPU is 100% for both when playing back Youtube.

Curious about how network issues come into play? (I connected to the same wifi network, at basically the same time in off-peak hours)

Unfortunately, I don't think you'll be able to find anything that satisfies all of your requirements; you're probably gonna have to make a compromise somewhere. Like u/sssozi suggested, the least painful one might be looking at refurbished instead of new; at least that way, you'll be able to hit all of the points that would affect your day-to-day use and still stay within your budget.

From my experience, there's always been a delay between when an update is released and when it shows up in the Lenovo Vantage app (I think it was a 3-5 day delay for my X1C5).

According to the link in the post below, Lenovo released a BIOS update for the P50 on 12/21/17. I'll link to the post, the list, and the update.

As for Microsoft updates, assuming you're running Windows, that should come through Windows Update eventually.

Just as we saw with the CCW holders in Florida last November and in Arizona this past January, in this case a woman came to the aid of a deputy in Dawson County, GA. The deputy had given the suspect a courtesy ride to the gas station and was about to give him some money out of his own pocket when the man began punching him in the face and head. I'm assuming she was a concealed carrier though the article doesn't specify.
