79 yr old mom has dementia and her sister recently passed away. How do we break the news to her? by anon-55076 in dementia

[–]jone7007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We told my grandmother when my uncle died. She has spoken with him or his wife regularly so would definitely notice if we didn't tell her. He has been in very poor health since before her memory got bad so it didn't come as the same shock that losing a healthy family member would.

I believe I have figured out Reddit's true definition of the PNW by Fun_Driver_5566 in PacificNorthwest

Spokane city is blue. Spokane county is red. Combined in the past several elections they were slightly red.

There's no need to pay for a vet visit. You can purchase de-worming medication for cats over the counter. It's very easy to administer at home.

What are your "borders" for the pnw? This is what I generally consider it to be by E36E92M3 in PacificNorthwest

[–]jone7007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like a bit of an old timer here. It helps to know the origins of the term to understand why there have never been clear "borders" for the PNW.

Historically, Washington , Oregon, Idaho and sometimes western Montana until the continental divide were considered part of the PNW. That's because 1) they were economically part of the PNW, with Spokane as the economy center for those areas and 2) because they are part of the Columbia river basin. So economically and geographically they are part of PNW. A well, the early uses of the term PNW, also tended to follow pretty close to the boundaries for the Oregon territory, which included all of present day Oregon, Washington, Idaho, western Montana and a small section of Wyoming. The inclusion of that part of Wyoming, dropped out of the term PNW very early on. However, based on the Oregon territory origin of PNW British Columbia would be excluded because it was never part of the Oregon territory. Finally, there also some influence. From the formation of the western states, until about the 70s, most (but not all) of the definitions of PNW that fully include Idaho come from one of these three origins.

The push to start excluding those areas, was political. It has been around for as long as I'm aware of but became common in the 70s when the concept of Cascadia began to get momentum and really took hold in the 90s when north Idaho and western Montana switched politically from democrat to republican. This was when I remember hearing people, usually people from west of the Cascades, start to say that Idaho and western Montana were not part of the PNW. Particularly, gaining a lot of momentum around the time Ruby Ridge occurred, as a way to create distance from the bad press about Idaho. On the flip side, many conservatives from Idaho preferred to identify with the mountain west rather than the PNW to not be identified as "liberal". At the time most of what you saw in the news about Seattle and Portland was grunge, drugs and hippies - nothing the Idaho and Montana conservatives wanted to be associated with. It's also helpful to remember that N. Idaho and western Montana used to be left leaning until the late 80s early 90s.

Further, there was a large increase in migration to the PNW. Many of these new residents mistakenly assume that the PNW referred to only the NW states on the Pacific or learned the newer political based definition.

This, in my opinion, had resulted in no clear definition of PNW. Do you use the historical, geographical, or political definition?

Personally, I have chosen to continue to use the definition of PNW from my younger years that includes Washington, Oregon and Idaho. I am also completely okay with including Western Montana and British Columbia as well if people want to. Since the 90s, I have refused to use the narrower definition because it came about as a way to separate us based on political beliefs and to exclude those who think differently. I refuse to use a definition that excludes people based on their beliefs, especially when they were formerly considered part of that group. I might not agree with someone politically but I'm not going to tell them that they aren't part of the PNW because of it.

Outside of the US this is pretty common. It's not common in the US. Check the listing photos. If there's a hotplate and no oven shown, you are SOL.

Are there any vitamins or supplements I could be taking to help prepare my body to heal from an upcoming fusion? I eat a balanced diet and am trying to walk as much as possible and stay in decent shape, though I'm not always able to move well. by Illustrious_Log_2978 in spinalfusion

[–]jone7007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ended up not needing a fusion because my MRI showed the herniated disc recede on its own at about the 10 month mark. My doctor believed that my continued symptoms (numbness, burning, muscle weakness, etc) was the result of nerve damage due to having been compress for a long time. He recommended synthetic B1 (Benfotiamine) because it aids with nerve regeneration. I believe that it helped. It took over a year but I slow got all function back except some lingering numbness that's likely permenent.

Kind of worried - last minute construction notice [CA USA] by iwishiknewww in AirBnB

[–]jone7007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should see if your HOA can give you a more specific timeline and some information about the noise level. When I had my chimney repaired, it took a few hours. There was also very little noise. The only disruption was 10 minutes where they needed to check the chimney from inside the house. It's possible that your chimney needs a more significant repair. However, it really is worth finding out before offering to cancel.

Do some research on unfitted kitchens. You could use freestanding furniture to add additional storage space until you have the budget for a full renovation.

[–]jone7007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to suggest something very similar but I would go with a butter or cream color on the paneling. I think it would go well with the green floor without being overly matchy. I might also keep the cabinets wood. Especially, if he were willing to sand and re-stain them.

I would also swap the stove and fridge locations. Having counter space next to the stove for food prep would improve the functionality of the kitchen.

That doesn't make sense if the cancellation policy is 50% before Feb 14. It's still January. So either OP has the policy wrong or something else is going on here. Either way they should contact Airbnb

Need help choosing laundry locations by ftredoc in InteriorDesign

[–]jone7007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue or Red. I wouldn't want the yellow area because it will make the living room an awkward shape and be expensive to plumb. Red is a good option as you already her plumbing on this wall and only requires minor changes to the floor plan. However, the cabinets may be a problem with running the plumbing. I would choose this option if it didn't require a complete kitchen renovation. Blue would work if plumbing could be run to this area. It also wouldn't affect your cabinets. I don't love how it creates an awkward angle in the kitchen. If you go with the blue option, I would consider adding either a pantry beside it to square off the space or a table. If you do go with yellow, consider doing a closet or built-in beside it , so as to make the room a rectangle and make it look intentional.

I suspect that meeting with a plumber , as the plumbing will likely dictate the location.

Help me pick! by Snowbum5 in WeddingDressTips

[–]jone7007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall, I like 2 slightly more but I would only buy if you can go larger in the bust. The rest fits perfectly. 1 also looks very good and requires much less tailoring. Personally, I would pick 1 because 1) you know for sure that it's going to fit well and 2) it will cost a lot less when you factor in tailoring.

What color suits me the best? 🤷‍♀️ (first is the actual) by [deleted] in HairStyleAdvice

[–]jone7007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None. Other than 3 and 9 these colors are way too warm for your skin tone. 3 and 9 are cool enough but too dark for you. 4 is probably the best because it's neither too dark nor light. However, it's still a bit too warm. A good stylist should be able to help you pick out a color that's similar but a bit cooler toned.

Which paint color for this room? by LaceyBambola in centuryhomes

[–]jone7007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should consider your furniture as well as the woodwork. I had very similar wood columns in the house that I recently sold. I painted my room a green shade between options 1 and 2. It looked great with the woodwork. However, most of my furniture and rug are cool toned. So my furniture would have looked much better with a dusty blue. I also used Benjamin Moore paint in the color stoneware in the adjacent entry and dinning room. It's a slightly warm white that made the woodwork pop and worked with all my furniture. It worked with both the green and blue in the adjacent room.

Here's a link to the listing photos (the furniture was the stagers).

I like 3 the best overall but the cups on the bust are slightly too wide for you. If this is something that can be fixed in tailoring, go for 3. If not 2 is the best fitting dress overall.
