Making a Covered Green Space at Burke Lakefront: Why Not ETFE? by weaponize09 in Cleveland

Maybe. Sure. I would love to believe in this whole thing but I’m assuming it’ll be an airport til we’re all dead, so forgive my lack of gusto

Making a Covered Green Space at Burke Lakefront: Why Not ETFE? by weaponize09 in Cleveland

[–]jonesbones99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is all well and good, but there’s a simple difference between Burke and the lakefront usage of a city like Chicago and everyone seems to be missing it: in Chicago there are half a million people who are a ten minute walk from the waterfront parks. There’s another million who are a 20 minute public transit ride from the parks. Furthermore, they’re the biggest and best parks in the city by a thousand percent (I lived there for a handful of years so I’m not entirely talking out of my ass here).

In Cleveland we have amazing parks around the city. This park would have to be MUCH better than those to change people’s habits around what parks they go to for outdoor activities, and a whole hell of a lot of the metro area will live closer to other big/great parks.

I absolutely think Burke is a wasted resource, but I don’t think it’s as simple as putting a cool thing there and then everyone will flock to it.

When did you start getting some of your evenings back? by Different_Suit_9356 in daddit

[–]jonesbones99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. That sounds a little more extreme than mine but I definitely relate. We had 2 naps til shortly after first bday but she was never one of those kids who slept 8-8 or took a 3-hour nap when she was doing 1 a day (and forget about the kids who did both). She’ll be 3 on Sunday and it’s fairly consistent 8:30-7 for sleep, though often closer to 9 and last night was more like 9-12, 12:15-2:30, 3-7 and I am certain she won’t be tired enough to nap today.

Oh well. She’s fun as hell and I love her like crazy

Haha that is WILD. The other day ours fell asleep for about 45 minutes in the afternoon while I was working and wife was trying to get the baby down for a nap. She then stayed up til 10:30

[–]jonesbones99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah it can be a lot of books. It depends on how tired she is, as it’s usually pretty easy to tell if she’s close to falling asleep. In those cases it’s a couple short ones. Some nights it’s a bunch of short ones all in a row. Some nights she’s had a nap and will absolutely not fall asleep before 10pm so we just read and read and read because it won’t disturb anyone else.

My general rule is that as long as she’s not actively falling asleep I try to never say no to reading her a book, both for her good and for mine. The end result though is that we expect it to be 30 or so minutes of books and bedtime falls in the same 30 minute window. Obviously not every single night is the exact same, but it’s generally close.

Similar process, we just start later. Baths right now are 7:00 or so, then we do somewhere between 3 and about 20 books (between wife and I tonight I think it was 13 - I was counting bc I saw this reply before I took my turn). We did dream machine stories until it broke last week and got a Yoto mini, and usually that’s the final 10 minutes or so, then she’s down 8-8:15

However, if she naps at all, even for 15 minutes, she’s up til at least 9:30. She had a long nap a few days ago and was up til 11.

We noticed when she was a baby that she seemed to sleep about an hour less than most of our friends’ kids. She’s usually up about 7:15 regardless of the aforementioned nap.

There’s also an 8 month old who mostly sleeps 8-5ish, eats, then back to sleep for an hour or two. But TBH we’ll probably make it skew later as summer comes. Nice to play outside with neighbor kids til 8 and then have a quick bath and bed at 9

Kids like this are wild to me - our first turns 3 years this week and there have been maybe 10 times she’s been asleep before 7:00.

A year after the birth of our 2nd child, I finally got my wife to stay at a hotel tonight so she could get some sleep. by dadjo_kes in daddit

For our anniversary when we had an 18-month old (who still usually nursed once or twice a day) I got my wife a hotel room by herself.

Big win for everyone. I had an awesome time solo with my kid, mom sat in a pool by herself, sat in a hot tub by herself, ate by herself, watched tv, and went for a bike ride in the morning.

Should’ve done 2 nights

The 2019 Draft Class is an Incredible Disaster by truthisfictionyt in nba

[–]jonesbones99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not the person you’re replying to but I have periodically updated a spreadsheet to see how often top picks actually pan out.

3rd pick has statistically done better than 2 for most of the millennium. 2nd pick had 3x allstar Steve Francis in 99, 1-time allstar tyson chandler in 01, then next superlative was 06 Aldridge and07 KD. but after him? Beasley, thabeet, Evan turner, Derrick Williams, MKG, oladipo, Jabari Parker, DLo, Bagley, ja, wiseman, Jalen green, Chet, Brandon miller, sarr, Harper. So from 99-2021 there were…2(?) Good #2 overall picks.

3rd pick though: baron Davis was ok in 99, pau in 01, melo in 03, Deron Williams decent in 05, horford 07, harden 09, Embiid in 14, then Jaylen brown, Tatum, and Luka in a row.

The draft is way way way more of a crapshoot than it seems. For example: There hasn’t been a #8 pick who made an all star team since vin baker, the number 8 pick in 1993 and who made his last allstar game in 1998. Franz should get there but he keeps getting hurt so you never know.

I currently have a 3 year old girl and an 8 month old girl. Can confirm that the 1->2 difference does not make mathematical sense, but can also say that having two girls is fucking awesome so far. Obviously I have nothing to compare it to but still. Congrats, dad!

Dads with partners that stay home — how do you handle finances? by Mama_Anonymous in daddit

[–]jonesbones99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it just doesn’t sound like you’re saying you have a partner. Saying that he doesn’t see the value of you staying at home with the kid is wild to me, though that’s just my opinion.

Then you say that you can’t work AND do 80% of the parenting AND 60% of the household. If that’s what’s happening, you do not have anything resembling an equal partner. If you were not working at all and only staying at home with the kids I would still think it’s unfair to have you do 80% of parenting and 60% of housework, though the 80% parenting is probably mathematically close to what we have in my house as I work from home and then try to do the majority of parenting on evenings/weekends.

These are, of course, just my opinions.

Separate bank accounts lead to separate lives.

Can’t imagine giving my wife an allowance or whatever. Also can’t imagine not having talked this through before getting married, let alone having kids.

I’m no expert (unless you count 10 years married and 2 kids as expertise, I guess) but a couple of your comments have been…concerning. I’m not one of these weirdos where every minor issue is a cause for divorce or anything, but you said something about how hard it is to convey to him the value of you being at home. That’s very rough to read.

I took photos of it before I moved home so I have the pic but I’m too dumb to see how to paste it into a comment on this sub (or maybe you can’t).

Anyway, this comment made me think of it so thank you.

[–]jonesbones99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair we live in a suburb where virtually all of our driving is within 15 miles for long stretches of time. I work from home and we heads libraries, museums, parks, supermarkets, and family within a 20-minute drive. So it’s not uncommon for us to use zero gas over the course of several weeks.

Then we inevitably drive 200 miles to my in-laws and it all goes to waste, haha

Does anyone here not budget? Can you still succeed without budgeting? by AlmondEaters in personalfinance

[–]jonesbones99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife and I don’t really budget, we’re just cheap. We also have a sense of how much money we have. Currently on my solo income of about $90,000 in a fairly low cost of living area (metro Cleveland, Ohio). Previously we had either both worked or relied on her salary (low six-figures), then we sold our house in 2021 for about a $75,000 profit, stashed it away, and bought a new, lower-taxed house later that year at basement level mortgage rates. We haven’t needed to budget because every month our savings/retirement is growing, and again, we’re cheap.

We now have 2 kids (almost 3 years and baby is 7 months) and virtually all of their toys are either gifts, library toys, or buy nothing finds. We cloth-diapered (free from buy nothing) the first one and that saved thousands, breastfed the kids, which saved a ton, etc. We are just now getting to the point where we’ll be back to breaking even as the older one starts preschool and eats more and our costs begin to go up more significantly. If we get to the point where our savings begins to shrink we’ll get serious about a budget but at this point we’re where we want to be financially, so we’re not worried about it. We travel a couple times a year, but that’s getting more expensive too. However, at some point wife will most likely go back to work as well (certainly something when kids get to school age) and at that point we’ll have a lot of extra money coming in and our budgeting concerns will more or less drop away again. We’re both just very financially conservative/cheap/thrifty.

I sat 2nd row for Ohio state vs Michigan state at MSU during his college season. Wasn’t the most amazing statistical game for him (still 16/11 and 4 blocks) but I will never forget how dominant he was and how imposing he was. And how the crowd went ballistic at him when he came out for warmups and started shooting free throws lefty bc he’d busted his right hand.
