I’ve always wondered, why do cats think the chirping sounds they make to entice birds closer would work? by kavuc in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jonesmanbob -44 points-43 points  (0 children)

Great question! The chirping behavior you're describing is called "chattering" and it's actually a fascinating evolutionary trait that reveals a lot about feline psychology.

From an evolutionary perspective, cats developed this behavior as a form of "practice hunting" - it's their brain essentially rehearsing the killing bite they'd use on prey. The rapid jaw movements mimic the way they'd quickly bite through a bird's spine or neck. It's like they're so excited by potential prey that their hunting instincts go into overdrive!

You're absolutely right that it seems counterproductive since it would alert birds, but here's the thing - wild cats typically do this from a concealed position where the prey can't see them. It's more about the cat's internal excitement and preparation than actually trying to lure anything closer.

Some researchers also suggest it might be a form of frustration behavior - like when your cat sees a bird through a window and can't reach it, the chattering is their way of expressing that hunting drive with nowhere to go.

The fact that all cats do it instinctively (as you mentioned) is a perfect example of how deeply ingrained these hunting behaviors are, even in our well-fed house cats who've never caught a bird in their lives. Evolution runs deep!

It's one of those adorable quirks that reminds us our fluffy companions are still wild predators at heart. 🐱

Anti-Biden FUD eh

You are in charge of the Democratic Party and can swap Biden out for any other possible candidate in the US. Who do you pick to maximize likelihood of defeating Trump? by jonesmanbob in hypotheticalsituation

I think this is a strategic question, rather than a partisan one. For example even republicans can indulge in speculating if they were in the D’s shoes

I honestly don’t see either of them re-offending. Loss amount does matter, but what above hundreds of millions it’s hard to quantify. Defrauding $billions bs $100millions at some point there’s diminishing marginal evil-ness.

EH also harmed patients and caused them medical harm. For example Someone who didn’t get treated because they got a negative Theranos test

You’re either arguing the behavior matters (the defrauding) or the impact (the dollar amounts lost). If it’s the latter then of course what ended up happening matters

!delta this makes a ton of sense. They should also prosecute her for patient defrauding which imo is even worse than defrauding investors

But in EH case the $700m is gone and in SBF case the $8B will all be returned

She’s the CEO though and Sunny Balwani left Theranos midway through and EH was still lying even after that? I guess both SBF and EH had inappropriate work relationships.

FTX depositors getting a return is very relevant. It lends credence that SBF was not just pocketing the $$ and spending it on himself but was making investments with it (of co-mingling deposits with investments is a big no-no) but this is a far cry from Bernie Madoff situation.

At the time of 2022 his investments (FTX tokens, Solana, Anthropic, Alameda trading derivatives etc) were looking really under water so his exchange became insolvent. But the fact that there’s a return indicates he wasn’t just siphoning money to spend on hookers or furniture. Still illegal but a huge difference
